Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in enhancing speaking skills among 29 EFL junior secondary students at SMPN 3 Polongbangkeng Utara, Indonesia. Involving 29 junior high school students, this research employs a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The results revealed that TBLT significantly improved students' speaking proficiency. The mean score for the pre-test was 34.90 (SD = 10.844), while the post-test mean score increased to 68.83 (SD = 11.680). A paired-sample t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (t = 21.95, p < .001), indicating a substantial enhancement in speaking skills following the implementation of TBLT. The calculated effect size of Cohen's d = 2.99 supports the conclusion that TBLT had a large and significant impact on the improvement of students' speaking abilities. This significant improvement suggests that TBLT provides an effective method for boosting speaking proficiency in language learners. Furthermore, the results underline the importance of using meaningful tasks that encourage active language use and communication in real-world contexts. The findings offer strong evidence that TBLT can be a highly effective approach to enhance speaking skills, especially in contexts where traditional teaching methods may fall short. Generally, the study reveals that TBLT can lead to significant improvements in students' speaking skills, offering valuable insights into its potential as an instructional strategy for language learning. Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether using personal experience improves students’ speaking ability. This research employed quantitative method with pre-experimental design. The population in this research consisted of second-year students at SMPN 26 Makassar, totaling 264 students across eight classes. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, focusing on class VIII-3, which had 28 students. This class was chosen based on two factors: preliminary observations indicating a need for fluency improvement, and its representativeness of the larger population. This research used SPSS as the tool for the data analysis. The findings reported that the use of personal experience contributed positively to the improvement of students’ speaking fluency at SMP Negeri 26 Makassar. This is reflected in the pre-test and post-test score comparison, which showed notable progress in fluency-related aspects, including smoother speech delivery, fewer hesitations, and more spontaneous verbal expression. Statistical analysis through a paired sample t-test revealed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, while N-gain analysis indicated moderate improvement. These findings suggest that incorporating students’ personal experiences into speaking activities may be an effective way to enhance fluency in EFL classroom contexts. Keywords: Personal experience, Speaking ability, Students’ improvement

Abstract

The increasing use of machine translation tools in academic contexts has raised concerns about their accuracy in translating complex academic language. This study aims to analyze the accuracy of Google Translate in translating academic sentences through a qualitative literature review. The review synthesized findings from 16 selected studies published between 2014 and 2025 that examined Google Translate or machine translation in academic, educational, and language learning contexts. The studies were selected based on their relevance to translation accuracy, error types, user perceptions, and the use of Google Translate in EFL settings. The data were analyzed using thematic categorization, focusing on grammatical accuracy, lexical and terminological accuracy, contextual and semantic accuracy, translation performance across language pairs, and educational implications. The findings indicate that Google Translate performs relatively well in translating simple and general sentences, especially those with clear structures and common vocabulary. However, its accuracy decreases when translating complex academic sentences, technical terms, culture-bound expressions, and context-dependent meanings. The review also shows that translation accuracy varies across language pairs and is influenced by sentence complexity, linguistic structure, and the availability of language resources. In educational contexts, Google Translate can support students’ comprehension, vocabulary learning, and academic writing, but excessive dependence on the tool may reduce students’ critical language awareness. Therefore, Google Translate should be used as a supportive tool accompanied by critical evaluation and human post-editing. Future studies are recommended to test Google Translate using real academic sentences written by Indonesian EFL students.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly influenced academic writing instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This study aims to explore lecturers’ practices in using AI-powered tools to support academic writing, with attention to their pedagogical use, stages of integration, instructional roles, and perceived challenges. This study employed a qualitative design involving ten lecturers from two Indonesian universities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that AI-powered tools, including Grammarly, QuillBot, and ChatGPT, are mainly used for grammar correction, paraphrasing, vocabulary improvement, and idea generation. The use of these tools is mostly directed toward the revision stage, while planning and drafting remain largely student-driven. Lecturers play an important role in controlling and guiding AI use to maintain students’ authorship and academic integrity. However, AI integration is still limited by lecturers’ digital competence, lack of institutional training, unclear guidelines, and concerns about student dependency on automated outputs. The study implies that responsible AI integration in EFL academic writing requires clear institutional guidelines, lecturer training, and ethical writing policies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' vocabulary mastery levels and the internal and external factors that influence their vocabulary mastery in English learning at SMP Negeri 48 Makassar. This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were obtained through vocabulary tests consisting of multiple-choice and essay questions, while qualitative data were obtained through observation and interviews. The study sample was 30 grade VII-8 students selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that students' vocabulary mastery levels were still relatively low, with an average score of 43.53 and a standard deviation of 17.92, indicating significant variation in ability among students. Qualitative findings revealed that internal factors such as motivation, self-confidence, cognitive ability, and memory influence students' vocabulary acquisition. Furthermore, external factors such as the school environment, teacher teaching methods, peer group environment, and family support also play a significant role in the vocabulary learning process. Observations indicate that the learning process is still dominated by conventional methods with limited use of learning media, resulting in students experiencing difficulties in actively using vocabulary in communication. Thus, it can be concluded that students' vocabulary acquisition is influenced by a combination of internal and external factors. Therefore, more interactive and contextual learning strategies and optimal learning environment support are needed to improve students' vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

This study investigates lecturers' experiences implementing digital learning in English reading classes in Indonesian higher education. With the widespread adoption of digital technology, English reading classes that previously relied on printed texts and face-to-face interactions increasingly integrate digital tools to enhance student engagement and comprehension. This research uses a qualitative approach to explore lecturers' experiences adapting their teaching methodologies with digital tools. The purposive sample involves five lecturers teaching English reading classes at Maros Muslim University who have experience with traditional methods and digital learning, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through one-on-one interviews, providing rich, detailed accounts of how lecturers integrate digital learning into their teaching practices. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, following the methodological framework of Braun & Clarke (2006). This approach involved systematically identifying, analyzing, and reporting patterns (themes) within the data. The findings reveal that lecturers demonstrate high flexibility in using various digital devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets to meet different teaching needs. Lecturers also emphasize the importance of the interactive capabilities of digital tools, which can transform passive reading into a more dynamic and engaging experience. However, they also acknowledge the value of traditional learning materials like printed books, which remain important for tasks requiring deep engagement and critical thinking. The study highlights the need to balance digital and traditional learning resources to create inclusive and effective learning environments. The lecturers' experiences adapting to digital tools are crucial for successfully implementing digital learning and improving educational outcomes. This study provides valuable insights into the practical realities of digital learning implementation and strategies to support lecturers in this transition process.
