Abstract

Abstract. Salim MA, Budi RSW, Setyaningsih L, Iskandar, Wahyudi I, Kirmi H. 2020. Root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in various age classes of revegetation post-coal mine. Biodiversitas 21: 5013-5022. This study aims to evaluate the status of colonization of the roots of the host plant in various age classes of revegetation of post-coal mining land associated with AMF spores populations and soil fertility. The study was conducted in the post-mining revegetation land at PT. Berau Coal, East Kalimantan. Isolation of the spores was carried out using the wet-sieving and centrifugation method, while the colonization of the roots was carried out by the root coloring technique. Revegetation activities have been able to increase the content of some nutrients in the soil. The AMF population shows tendency an increase along with the increasing revegetation age classes. Eight-year revegetation age classes have the highest average number of spores. Plant species and understorey have shown the existence of AMF colonization with different values for each species. AMF root colonization has a negative relationship with the number of spores in the soil. The C-organic, N-total, CEC Ca, Mg and Fe contents have a positive correlation with AMF root colonization, while available P, total P, K, and Al have a negative correlation with AMF root colonization. Mg was significantly correlated (r = 0.861) to AMF root colonization.

Abstract

Abstract. Pidjath C, Sopandie D, Turjaman M, Budi SW. 2021. Morpho-physiological changes of four tropical tree seedlings under aluminum stress. Biodiversitas 22: 1211-1220. Phytotoxicity of aluminum due to acidic soil can cause a major threat to plant survival and health in the tropical region.  Woody plant species are known to be well adapted to acidic soils. The research aimed to assess the growth and physiological response of tropical tree species Calliandra calothyrsus Meisn, Samanea saman Jacq. Merr, Ochroma grandiflora Rowlee, and Calophyllum inophyllum Linn exposed to high aluminum concentration in a nutrient solution. The completely randomized design was applied in this experiment with two treatments (0 and 4.0 mM Al exposure). Each treatment consists of three replicates for each species. The results revealed that the Al concentration of 4.0 mM inhibited plant growth, and nutrient uptake of all plants tested. Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of S. saman and C. calothyrsus were higher when exposed to 4.0 mM Al, whereas O. grandiflora and C. inophyllum were lower. Hematoxylin staining showed high Al accumulation in the root epidermal and outer cortical cells of all plants except C. inophyllum. The Al concentration of 4 mM decreased the calcium and magnesium concentrations in shoots and roots in all plants tested. There was a high increase in Al concentration in shoots of O. grandiflora. Based on various parameters studied, we concluded that C. inophyllum could be proposed as a tolerant species, whereas O. grandiflora is more vulnerable to aluminum stress.

Abstract

Abstract. Salim MA, Setyaningsih L, Wahyudi I, Budi SW. 2021. Growth of Falcataria moluccana and Albizia chinensis seedling under aluminum exposure. Biodiversitas 22: 3693-3701. Aluminum (Al) is an element found in acid soils and is one of the limiting factors for plant growth. This study aims to examine the growth of Falcataria moluccana (Miq.) Barneby & J.W.Grimes and Albizia chinensis (Osbeck) Merr seedlings under exposure of aluminum. This study used an one-factor completely randomized design (Al concentration) consisting of 5 levels, namely 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 mM. Each treatment was repeated 3 times and each replication consisted of 3 plant units. The results showed that the Al exposure treatment gave significant differences in the growth of height, root length, dry weight (root, shoot, and total) of F. moluccana and A. chinensis seedlings. The 2 mM Al concentration stimulated the growth of height, root length and dry weight (root, shoot, and total) of A. chinensis seedlings. The tolerance index for F. moluccana and A. chinensis seedlings was highest when the Al 2 mM concentration was 147.55% and 115.32%, respectively. 2 mM Al exposure treatment increased the chlorophyll content a, b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids of F. moluccana and A. chinensis seedlings. Al exposure treatment did not significantly differ from the rate of photosynthesis and MDA content in F. moluccana and A. chinensis seedlings. The Al content in the roots was higher than in the shoots, and the increase in Al concentration increased the Al content in the roots and shoots of F. moluccana and A. chinensis seedlings.

Abstract

Abstract. Rumondang AL, Kusmana C, Budi SW. 2021. Species composition and structure of Angke Kapuk Mangrove Protected Forest, Jakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3863-3871. Angke Kapuk Mangrove Protected Forest (AKMPF) is one of the protected forests in the coastal area of DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. This area is important for the north coast of Jakarta, hence it has function to protect the land from sea abrasion, seawater intrusion, and seawater flooding. This study aims to determine the condition of forest structures and species composition in the Angke Kapuk Mangrove Protected Forest (AKMPF) to obtain useful information for sustainable mangrove forest management. Vegetation data were collected using the sampling unit of transect for tree and line plot for forest regeneration inventories. Those data were analyzed for the density, frequency, dominance, species diversity, and species distribution pattern. The obtained results show that AKMPF consists of 13 mangrove species, including 7 species of true mangrove, 5 species associated mangrove, and 1 species of palm, with the dominant species, are Avicennia marina for tree with its regenerations and Acrostichum aureum for groundcover. Overall, the species diversity index in this area was classified as low category. Mangrove trees in this area have height class between 4-28 meters formed bell-curve, while stem diameter class were between 10.00-69.75 cm formed L-curve. The distribution pattern of species in this areal generally was clumped.

Abstract

Abstract. Bekti HS, Budi SW, Wibowo C. 2022. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculum and soil ameliorants enhance the growth of Falcataria moluccana in revegetation of post-silica sand mining land in Sukabumi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 1181-1187. Open-pit mining of silica sand caused several negative impacts on the environment, especially inhibited plant growth. MycoSilvi is Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) inoculum enriched with Mycorrhizal Helper Bacteria (MHBs) which could increase plant growth and nutrient uptake in degraded soils. A ?eld experiment was conducted to study the growth response of F. moluccana (Miq.) Barneby & JW Grimes seedlings treated with MycoSilvi inoculation and soil ameliorants (lime and compost) in post-silica sand mining land. The experimental design used in this study was a completely randomized block design with a factorial scheme. The results showed that MycoSilvi inoculation combined with soil ameliorant significantly improved plant growth of F. moluccana and assisted plant survival within nine months after transplantation in the field. MycoSilvi inoculation and soil ameliorants also increased the number of bacteria in the soil rhizosphere compared with control treatment. This study indicated that revegetation with MycoSilvi inoculation and soil ameliorants could influence plant establishment and development of microbial soil communities in infertile soils, suggesting that it could be an effective method for further ecological rehabilitation in degraded land areas.

Abstract

Abstract. Lestari KG, Budi SW, Suryaningtyas DT, Yudhiman E. 2022. Vegetation development in post-gold mining revegetation area in Minahasa, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 3224-3233. Gold mining activities in Indonesia, in many areas, have a negative impact on the environment. Activities that can improve the quality of post-mining land include revegetation activities, which are included in post-mining land reclamation activities. The purpose of this study was to analyze the development of vegetation in post-gold mining revegetation areas. Vegetation data were collected using the plotted line method (natural forest) and the Systematic Sampling method with Random Start (revegetation area). The analysis found that the vegetation structure in the post-gold mining revegetation area aged 3 to 10 years has complete vegetation levels (saplings, saplings, poles, and trees). Compared to natural forest, which only includes 30 tree species and 7 herbaceous, this revegetation region has a greater diversity of species, with 66 tree species and 16 herbaceous. The longer the age of revegetation is not followed by an increase in species and an increase in the value of the species diversity index. However, it is still better than the revegetation at a young age and is closer to the condition of a natural forest. The revegetation area aged 8 and 7 years has a higher number of species than natural forests and other revegetation areas.

Abstract

Abstract. Fridayanti N, Widajati E, Ilyas S, Budi SW, Palupi ER. 2023. Phenology of flowering and seed development of jernang rattan (Daemonorops spp.). Biodiversitas 24: 349-358. Jernang rattan has a high economic value due to its resin content in the exocarp, as the raw material of dyes, medicines, and cosmetics. The resin is highest in the immature fruit skin (exocarp); therefore, fruits are harvested before the seed is germinable. As a consequence, regeneration is very scarce, and the species is categorized as a rare plant. This research was aimed at investigating the flowering phenology and seed development of jernang rattan until they reach physiological maturity, when the viability and vigor are at their highest. The flowering phenology was observed based on Biologische Bundesanstalt Bundessortenamt and Chemische Industrie (BBCH), at the inflorescence stage, flowering stage, fruit development stage, and fruit ripening stage. The inflorescence development from flower bud until ready to bloom took 136.4 ±10.9 days for male plants and 141.6 ±16.4 days for female plants. The inflorescence of staminate flowers bloomed longer (29.4 ±2.7 days) than pistillate flowers (15.4 ± 4.0 days). Fruit abortion mostly occurs during the first six months of fruit development, coincides with the nuclear stage of endosperm, and the final seed set is 56%. It takes around 27 months of one reproduction cycle from the appearance of the inflorescence to seed maturity. The fruit reaches physiological maturity approximately at 22 MAA when the seed is of high viability and vigor, and harvesting at 22 MAA is best for seed production. It is recommended to set up a seed production area separated from the resin production area.

Abstract

Abstract. Akhir J, Herliyana EN, Surono, Budi SW. 2024. The first report of dark septate endophytes from Indonesian Pinus merkusii and its symbiosis role as a plant growth promoter in nursery condition. Biodiversitas 25: 312-321. To encourage the healthy growth of Pinus merkusii Jungh et de Vriese seedlings at the seedling stage, Dark Septate Endophytic (DSE) fungi were used as growth promoters. In this study, four DSE strains, i.e., Apls 1.5.3, Pls 32.1, Hs14.6a, and Hs14.6c isolated from P. merkusii roots, were tested for their ability to stimulate the growth of P. merkusii seedlings. After 14 weeks of incubation in nursery conditions, P. merkusii seedlings inoculated with four DSE strains experienced a higher increase in height and stem diameter when compared to the control treatment. Overall, the biomass results of P. merkusii seedlings treated with the DSE strains performed better than those of the control. Root colonization of P. merkusii seedlings showed that the 4 DSE strains significantly outperformed the control. The Hs14.6c strain outperformed the other strains and controls regarding nutrient (nitrogen) uptake. The findings of this study are the first to show that the DSE Apls 1.5.3 strain is similar to Cylindroccarpon, the Hs14.6a and Hs14.6c strains are similar to Cladophialophora sp., and the Pls 32.1 strain is similar to Oncopodiella trigonella based on identification results and phylogenetic trees and can be in symbiosis with seeds of P. merkusii, a pine species native to Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract. Herman W, Iskandar, Budi SW, Pulunggono HB, Kurniati, Milantara N. 2024. Dynamics of vegetation diversity and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in post-coal mining revegetation land in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 4627-4641. Post-coal mining causes significant changes in vegetation, soil, and landscape, necessitating reclamation to increase land area through revegetation activities as per government policy. Revegetation is expected to accelerate the recovery of ecosystem functions and reduce the impact of coal mining activities. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the dynamics of vegetation diversity and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) on post-coal mining revegetation land in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Vegetation samples were obtained using the purposive sampling method, and AMF analysis was carried out using the wet-sieving decanting method. The results showed an increase in vegetation diversity along with the increasing age of the revegetation plants. The highest control of plant species was Acacia mangium with INP values ??ranging from 100-300%. Vegetation diversity and vegetation dominance index were positively correlated with spore density with correlation coefficient values ??of 0.083 and 0.029. However, the relationship between diversity and vegetation dominance index in influencing spore density had a small effect; the highest spore density was found in revegetation in 2006, with a total of 555 spores per 25 g of soil-1. It can be concluded that natural succession land materials and revegetation in post-coal mining land up to 32 years of age can improve vegetation growth but still cannot match natural forests, both in terms of the number of species growing and the level of vegetation diversity achieved. However, it is important to note that this study has limitations, such as the focus on a specific region and the need for further research to understand the long-term effects of revegetation.

Abstract

Arbuscular mycorrhizae represent a form of mutualistic symbiosis between fungi and plant roots. The fungi obtain carbohydrates and energy from the plants, while the plants benefit from nutrients, hormone and water supplied by the fungi. This study aimed to: (1) to compare the diversity of spores, spore density, relative frequency, relative abundance, and colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in lowland forests ecosystem and coastal forests ecosystem, and (2) analyze the relationship between spore density and AMF colonization. Soil and root sampling was carried out in three plots within each forest ecosystem. The results showed that the diversity of AMF genera was higher in lowland forests ecosystem than in coastal forests ecosystem. The identified AMF genera included Glomus, Acaulospora, Gigaspora, Scutellospora, Sclerocystis, Diversispora, and Entrophospora, with Glomus and Acaulospora being the dominant genera in both forest ecosystem. The spore density and root colonization of AMF in the lowland forest and coastal forest did not differ significantly. Spore density and root colonization of AMF were higher in coastal forests ecosystem. A positive correlation was found between spore density and AMF colonization in both ecosystem forest.
