Abstract

The larva density is an indication of the density of Aedes sp known to be capable of transmitting the dengue virus as the cause of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and also as one of the indicators of the success of vector control activities. This study aimed to determine the difference of the water container container characteristics and the larvae density (HI, CI, BI) in Alak village as an endemic area and in Belo Village as a free area of dengue in Kupang Municipality. This analytic observational study using cross sectional study design. Observed variables were the type, the condition, the location, the material of water container and also the larvae density. Data collected by direct observation in water container and house. Data presented in tables were analyzed by t-test. This study found positive larvae at most container is for everyday need, on not sealed condition, in outside the home, and in a ceramic material. The study also found the value of HI is 0.887, CI is 0.146 and BI is 0.080. It means that larvae density between Alak and Belo Village is not different. The conclusion is that there is no difference in the larvae density (HI, CI, and BI) between endemic area and free area of DHF. The two regions have the same high level of larvae density, so it is advisable that mosquito eradication is not only priority in endemic areas but also in dengue-free areas.

Abstract

Mosquito density may represent the bionomic of Aedes sp and the risk of spreading the disease. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has been using ABJ, HI, CI, BI and Pupa Index (PI) to calculate the density of Aedes sp praimago and assess the risk of dengue transmission in an area, so it is necessary to look for an index that describes the individual risk of dengue transmission. The research objective was to analyze the relationship between praimago density of Aedes sp on the incidence of dengue fever in Kupang City, where in Kupang City. The research was conducted in 25 urban villages. Samples were taken from 20 people per sub-district obtained by cluster sampling, namely the center point is the DHF sufferer, then the nearest house was searched within a radius of 100 meters until a total of 20 houses were reached or 500 houses for Kupang City. The independent variables were larvae / pupa density (HP, PC, CPP, LH, PH, LCIH, PCIH, LPCIH, PPCIH, LPH, PPH) and egg density (TE, EDH, OIH), while the dependent variable was the incidence of DHF. Praimago density was determined by conducting an entomological survey in the form of a survey of eggs and larvae of Aedes sp. The data were processed to see the density of larvae and eggs per house, then statistically analyzed using independent t test, Chi Square, and Pearson Correlation. The study found that there was a relationship between larvae / pupa density (HP, PC, CPP, LH, LCIH, LPCIH, LPH) and egg density (TE, EDH, OIH) with the incidence of DHF. It concluded that the density of egg density and larvae / pupa density in a house can be used to estimate the risk of dengue fever from family members in the house.

Abstract

The presence of germs, including Tuberculosis germs, in the house is greatly influenced by home environmental factors and TB sufferers behavior. This research aim is to determine the influence of home environmental factors and behavior on the number of air germs in the tuberculosis patients house in Kupang City. This observational research was conducted with purposive sampling in 21 homes with 21 TB patients from 86 patients from 2 Community Health Centers in Kupang City, NTT, Indonesia. The number of air germs with MPN coliform examination is measured based on laboratory examination. The independent variables are the number of people sleeping in the same room, type of walls, type of floor, ventilation conditions, wearing masks in the house, drying mattresses/pillows, place to expel phlegm, type of cooking fuel, smokers, sunlight entering the bedroom, sunlight entering the room. Going out and passive smoking. The data collected was then analyzed using multiple regression, and result in the equation: Number of Air germs = -203,614 + 59,538Ventilation Conditions + 86,333Drying MattressPillows + 63,841Smoking + 83,515Mthr Light to Room. The model shows that 61% of the number of air germs in the Tuberculosis patient's house is influenced by ventilation conditions, the habit of drying cases and pillows, the ability to smoke, and sunlight entering the rooms of Tuberculosis sufferers. This regression model is suitable for predicting the number of room air germs, where the fewer ventilation conditions, the germ number will increase, so the less frequently drying mattresses and pillows can also impact increasing the number of air germs in the homes of Tuberculosis sufferers. The number of room germs will also increase with smoking behavior and lack of direct sunlight in the bedroom.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major worldwide health concern, with some regions in Indonesia facing challenges in achieving case detection objectives. This initiative sought to enhance tuberculosis case detection using mobile X-ray screening, the provision of preventative medication, and the identification of latent tuberculosis infections among household contacts and high-risk groups, especially stunting children. The results indicated that just 6.03% of participants had a history of tuberculosis contact, but 67.84% presented risk factors including malnutrition, exposure to smoking, previous tuberculosis diagnosis, and diabetes. Chest radiography revealed anomalies in 6.03% of individuals, requiring further diagnostic verification. Furthermore, stunting was widespread, with 48% categorized as moderately stunted and 27% as severely stunted. Post-intervention evaluations indicated an enhanced mother's understanding of tuberculosis. Initiatives to enhance tuberculosis case finding among women and children under five in rural regions must be expanded and strengthened to decrease transmission, enhance detection rates, bridge information gaps, mitigate stigma, and increase treatment coverage, ultimately leading to reduced tuberculosis transmission.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of growth failure in infants (0-11 months) and toddlers (12-59 months) due to chronic malnutrition, especially during the first 1,000 days of life, resulting in children being too short for their age. Poor environmental sanitation can cause infectious diseases in toddlers, which can disrupt the digestive process in nutrient absorption and may lead to long-term stunting. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between environmental sanitation factors and the incidence of stunting in toddlers. This observational analytical study used a case-control approach. The sample consisted of toddlers living in the Liliba Sub-district, totaling 74 toddlers: 37 cases (stunted) and 37 controls (not stunted). The research variables were wastewater management, availability of latrines, and handwashing habits. Data were collected by interview using questionnaire. The analytical test that will be used is the chi-square test. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test. The research results indicate a significant relationship between wastewater management (p=0.011), availability of toilets (p=0.040), and handwashing habits (p=0.011) with the incidence of stunting. Given the link between household wastewater management, toilet availability, handwashing habits, and the occurrence of stunting.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major public health problem in the world.  It is estimated that one-third of the world's population has been infected with TB germs. Factors that cause TB include knowledge, behavior, home environmental conditions and other factors, where all these factors are interrelated, making the TB problem increasingly complex, prevention and intervention steps that must be taken.  For this reason, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the factors that influence the incidence of Tuberculosis in Kupang City.  This analytical observational study was conducted with a case-control study design. Kupang City was chosen because TB cases are still high in NTT Province.  The study period was June–September 2021 with a sample of cases being TB patients undergoing treatment, namely 75 TB patients and 75 non-TB patients as a control group.  Data were collected through direct interviews. Analysis was carried out univariately and bivariately with the chi square test. This study found that factors related to the incidence of tuberculosis were knowledge (p 0.049), smoking behavior and number of cigarettes per day (p 0.000), room density (p 0.035), and room lighting (p 0.0009). Therefore, it is necessary to provide more education to the community about how it is transmitted, how to prevent and how to treat it, as well as counseling about the impact of smoking, especially in relation to the risk of tuberculosis.  It is also important to provide counseling on healthy homes, especially by reducing residential density (or increasing the size of the house) and arranging the house so that sunlight can enter the house directly in the morning. Protection is needed against smoke caused by wood and kerosene, especially for breathing and especially tuberculosis.

Abstract

Malaria is caused by plasmodium transmitted through the bite of an infected female Anopheles. Indonesia, especially NTT Province, is endemic to malaria. Mata Air Village is located in the Tarus Health Center area of Kupang Regency with a high total of cases in 2017, namely 502 patients. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of the location of Anopheles larvae growth in Mata Air Village. This descriptive study describes the characteristics of the location of Anopheles larvae breeding in Mata Air Village. The variables studied include the type of breeding site, water temperature, water pH, water salinity, and density of larvae. The study sample included all locations that have the potential to be breeding sites for Anopheles larvae. The analysis was carried out descriptively to describe the characteristics of the Aedes growth location. The results showed that the most common habitat was swamps with a percentage of 21.43%, while the least common habitats were puddles, dry coconut residue, and livestock drink containers, each at 7.14%. The habitat types found consisted of permanent at 35.71% and temporary at 64.29%. The highest water temperature was recorded in the rice field habitat with a value of 30°C, while the lowest temperature was found in the remains of dry coconuts with a value of 26°C. The highest pH value in the rice fields reached 8, while the lowest pH value was found in used buckets, leftover dry coconuts, and leftover wheels, each of which was 6. The salinity value in all habitats was detected to be empty. The average density of high Anopheles larvae was found in dirty puddles with a value of around 2.7 per scoop, while no larvae were found in irrigation channels. With the discovery of Anopheles habitat in the swamp, it is recommended to consider fish farming in the swamp area or to fill the swamp, or to drain the swamp water to a lower area, so that it is hoped that there will be no more puddles and Anopheles larvae around the settlement.
