Abstract

This paper examines the income distributional impact of the 1997s economic crisis that hit Indonesia using Social Accounting Matrix data for 1995 and 1998. Relying on a comparison of the distribution before and after crisis, the study suggests three main findings based on multiplier analysis. First, poor households have been harder hit by crisis than rich households. Second, there are indication that crisis making income transfer likely to occurs from consumer to producer. Third, it is hard to eliminate disparity in income distribution relying only on market mechanism. From impact analysis we obtain the result for policy recommendation. Agriculture price support policy tend to biased to rural rich households, while export promotion policy biased to urban rich households. Direct income transfers to poor household and income redistribution policy seems to be the best policy for improving the distribution of income after crisis.

Abstract

Recently convergence of regional per capita income has been a frequent object of regional studies as well as the case of Indonesia. However, different methods often yield different results therefore we try to choose the appropriate methods. Rather o-convergence, we use Theil index to analyze regional disparity and found that regional convergence in Indonesia does not appear to be a simple monotonic process, but seems to vary over time -and hence requires explanation. From here, we suggest that the use of long-term interval in regression of β convergence analysis will destroy the relationship among variables. The use of least square methods only suitable for absolute p-convergence analysis. We conclude that the most appropriate methods for conditional β convergence are instrumental methods. As an alternative one, we suggest panel- data methods. We found that the convergence rate in Indonesia is slow at 1,59 percent per year over 1975-2000. With conditional convergence analysis, we found that the difference on growth rate can be explained systematically by a set of explanatory variables. The inclusion of these variables makes the convergence rate become faster which is 3,91 percent per year. Most of these variables are under controlled by government. In summary, we conclude that government policies have significant influence for rapid and sustainable regional economic growth.

Abstract

The production of renewable energy from microalgal biomass offers a promising pathway to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This study compares the technical performance, economic feasibility, and carbon emissions of bioethanol and biogas production from Spirogyra sp. using SuperPro Designer 10.7. The results show that the technical performance is highly dependent on process configurations. The best-performing bioethanol scenario (E3-2: flotation–continuous fermentation) produced 537.37 kg/batch with an energy consumption of 41.81 MJ/kg . In comparison, the optimal biogas scenario (B1-1: mesophilic digestion–water scrubbing) yielded 1,026.56 kg/batch with a lower energy consumption of 7,614 MJ/kg . Techno-economic analysis revealed that all scenarios are currently economically unviable at the simulated scale due to negative Net Present Values (NPV < 0), despite some scenarios exhibiting positive Return on Investment (ROI). Biogas production demonstrated higher energy efficiency, while bioethanol offered a cleaner emission profile. An integrated biorefinery approach is recommended to improve overall economic viability and biomass conversion efficiency.

Abstract

Synthesis and Characterization of Cellulose Acetate Membrane with The Addition of Natural Antibiofouling Garlic Extract. Membrane technology is a technology that can separate two phases (permeate and feed). The main problem in membrane technology is the material contained in the feed, which causes fouling (pore closure). An alternative to reducing fouling is by adding anti-biofouling substances into the membrane. The material that can be used as a natural anti-biofoulant is garlic extract which has antibacterial properties. This study aimed to analyze the effect of adding garlic extract on the improvement of membrane characteristics (thickness, tensile strength, elasticity), clean water flux, and anti-biofouling properties of Bacillus subtilis bacteria. The cellulose acetate membrane was synthesized using dimethylformamide as solvent through the phase inversion method. The addition of garlic extract in the manufacture of cellulose acetate membranes had concentrations of 0.25% w/v (0.01 g), 0.5% w/v (0.02 g), 0.75% w/v (0.03 g), and 0% w/v (control) with a thickness of 0.3 mm. The optimum results were obtained for the membrane with a concentration of 0.5% w/v, which resulted in the tensile strength test of 0.977 N/mm2, and the membrane with a concentration of 0.25% w/v, which resulted in an elongation elasticity of 12.22%. The antibacterial properties of membranes with the addition of garlic extract were indicated by the adhesion reduction of Bacillus subtilis bacteria on the membrane surface by 41.5% – 87.7% area.
