Abstract

Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) has been known empirically as a plant that has benefits as a traditional antidiabetic Javanese medicine to treat diabetes mellitus (DM). The main compound contained in sambiloto is andrographolide which has a hypoglycemia effect. Andrographolide has low solubility in water and poor bioavailability due to biotransformation by P-glycoprotein in the intestinal tract which causes andrographolide to metabolize more quickly in the duodenum and jejunum. To overcome this extract ethanol of sambiloto (EES) formulated to patch transdermal. Enhancers can affect the characteristics of transdermal patch preparations which affect the pharmacological activity of transdermal patch preparations. The critical point of transdermal patch preparation is the selection of enhancers which is one of the compounds to increase the penetration of active substances in the skin by disrupting the permeability of the stratum corneum. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of variations in the combination of oleic acid and tween 80 as an enhancer on the physical characteristics of EES patches. The methods of extraction sambiloto use soxhetation with ethanol 96% as solvent. The formulation of EES patch transdermal using solvent casting technique with various concentration enhancer tween-80 and oleic acid. This research was conducted by making 3 formulas, where F1  (1:1), F2 (1:3) and F3 (1:3). The evaluations include weight uniformity, thickness, water content, pH and folding endurance of the patch. The result of visual appearance the patch EES has a dark green with aroma specific of EES. The characteristics of EES transdermal patches were affected by the ratio of tween-80 and oleic acid as the enhancers. The combination of oleic acid and tween 80 as a permeation enhancer has an influence on physical characteristics (weight and thickness) of EES patches.

Abstract

This study explored the potential of Jasminum sambac (jasmine) and Mentha piperita (peppermint) as natural sexual stimulants (aphrodisiacs) to enhance sexual activity in males and females through the use of essential oils. The main objective was to identify the most effective combination of essential oil formulations, which were evaluated through several biological and physiological parameters, including sexual behavior in mice, sperm quality, testicular histopathology, and wax-based formulations as the delivery medium. Three formulations were tested: P1 (3:1:1), P2 (1:3:1), and P3 (1:1:3), administered to mice using a humidifier via inhalation. Sexual behavior was assessed through mounting latency and mounting frequency as indicators of libido. Sperm quality parameters included morphology, motility, viability, and sperm count. Testicular histopathology was examined to evaluate tissue structure and spermatogenesis activity. The results demonstrated that the P1 formulation was the most effective, showing the highest aphrodisiac activity. In the sexual behavior test, P1 recorded an activity value of 21±6.2, indicating enhanced libido. Sperm quality testing also confirmed the superiority of P1, with the lowest sperm abnormalities (5.3±1.53), highest motility (82±7.5), highest viability (85.6±4.58), and the greatest sperm count (53,300±16,653.3). Although testicular histopathology revealed a slight reduction in spermatogenic cells across all treatment groups, the change was not significant in the P1 group compared to the control. Overall, the P1 formulation improved libido and sperm quality more effectively than P3 and the control group, indicating its potential to be developed as an aphrodisiac preparation based on natural essential oils.

Abstract

Rose and vanilla essential oils have potential as natural active ingredients in emollient formulations due to their moisturizing and aromatherapeutic relaxation effects. This study aimed to formulate an aromatherapy emollient with four variations in the composition of rose and vanilla essential oils: F1 (0.1 mL:0.4 mL), F2 (0.2 mL:0.3 mL), F3 (0.3 mL:0.2 mL), and F4 (0.4 mL:0.1 mL). Each formula contained a total of 0.5 mL essential oil dissolved in 100 mL sunflower seed oil as the base. Organoleptic evaluation showed that all formulas had a yellowish-white color and liquid texture. The resulting aromas differed among formulas: F1 produced a woody scent, F2 and F3 had an oriental woody fragrance, while F4 exhibited a dominant rose aroma. The pH values ranged from 5.12 to 6.00, which is within the normal skin range. Viscosity values were between 4.92–5.30 cPs, specific gravity ranged from 1.0181–1.0682, and refractive indices were 1.470–1.471, indicating good physical stability. Hedonic testing revealed that Formula F2 was the most preferred by panelists in terms of aroma, texture, and after-feel on the skin. Skin irritation tests on rabbits showed no negative reactions, confirming the formulation’s safety for topical use. Biological activity tests on infant mice demonstrated significant increases in body weight and length compared to the control group. Based on overall results, Formula F2 (0.2 mL rose oil and 0.3 mL vanilla oil) was determined to be the best formulation, offering a balanced aroma, good physical stability, and optimal emollient and relaxation effects.

Abstract

Colorectal cancer prevention is closely linked to gut microbiota modulation, particularly by increasing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). This study investigates the effect of fermented red rice bran on colon microbiota improvement. Fermented bran was produced by mixing red rice bran with water and yeast, followed by an analysis of the proximate composition, dietary fiber, resistant starch, antioxidants, and phenols. A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 30 mice, assigned to normal, negative control, 10% bran, 20% bran, 10% fermented bran, and 20% fermented bran groups. Colorectal cancer was induced using DMBA (20 mg/kgBW) intraperitoneally four times over two weeks. Treatment groups received bran or fermented bran ad libitum for 14 days. Cecal analysis showed that 20% red rice bran and 10% fermented bran significantly increased SCFA levels (p < 0.05), suggesting improved microbiota function, but did not significantly alter pH or LAB counts. These findings highlight the potential of fermented red rice bran in modulating gut microbiota, though further studies are needed to elucidate its long-term effects and mechanisms in colorectal cancer prevention.

Abstract

Teki grass (Cyperus rotundus L.) tubers are medicinal plants that have been widely utilized for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer properties. These pharmacological activities are attributed to the presence of polyphenolic compounds, particularly flavanones. This study aims to determine the flavanone content in teki grass tubers using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The research was conducted as a laboratory-based experimental study, involving several steps: sample preparation, simplisia processing, extraction, and quantitative analysis of flavanone content by comparison with a flavanone standard. The UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis revealed the presence of flavanones in the extract of teki grass tubers. Quantitative results showed that the flavanone concentration in the extract was 128.29 µg/mL. These findings confirm that teki grass tubers are a potential natural source of flavanones, supporting their traditional herbal medicine use.

Abstract

One of the plants used as natural medicine is baby orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck). Baby oranges contain hesperidin, hesperetin, narirutin and nobiletin compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving ethanol extract of baby orange peel for 28 days on liver function as seen from the increase in SGOT and SGPT levels. This research is a pure experimental study with a completely randomized design (CRD) with a unidirectional pattern, namely the method used to observe the relationship of independent variables (including: normal control, negative control, ethanol extract of baby orange peel (EEKBJB) doses of 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg BW) with the dependent variable (SGOT and SGPT levels). The test animals used in this study were 30 male Wistar rats which were divided into 6 treatment groups which were treated for 28 consecutive days. On day 29, blood samples were taken from the orbital sinus of the eye and the levels of SGOT and SGPT were measured. There was a significant difference in the levels of SGOT and SGPT as indicated by the results of the One Way ANOVA test (p<0.05). The results of the Post Hoc-Tukey test for SGOT levels showed a significant difference between the control group and the 50 mg/kg BW dose group, while the 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg BW doses did not show a significant difference. The results of the Post Hoc-Tukey, s-HSD test for SGPT levels did not show a significant difference between the control group and the 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg BW dose groups. Significant differences were shown by doses of 50 and 400 mg/kg BW. Giving EEKBJB for 28 days did not cause toxic effects on liver function, seen from the absence of an increase in SGOT and SGPT levels.
