Abstract

One of the biggest plantation export commodities is coffee, with the number of products increasing every year. Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) is the most widely produced in West Java with average production 9,736 tons from 2014 - 2018. The by-product of coffee production resulting in water and soil pollution due to high moisture content and polyphenol content which is toxic to soil. Reduction of coffee pulp waste could be done by making animal feed and cascara tea. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of drying temperature using a convection oven on the characteristics of cascara tea quality. The drying temperatures used were 35 °C, 40 °C, 45 °C, 50 °C, and 55 °C. The research method used a laboratory experiment with descriptive analysis. The result showed that the difference in drying temperature could affect the characteristics of cascara tea quality. The best treatment was 45 °C of drying temperature with total yield was 6,61 ± 0,06 %, moisture content was 6,5705 ± 0,0272 % (w/w), ash content was 8,2107 ± 0,3195 % (w/w), polyphenol content was 14,2828 ± 0,2086 % (w/w). The organoleptic test result showed commercial cascara was ranked first with taste’s score was 3 (neutral), flavor’s score was 3 (neutral), and color’s score was 4 (like).

Abstract

Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) had a variety of active compounds that was the potential an alternative source of natural antioxidants. Procedures for isolating active compounds could been through microwave-assisted extraction. The purpose of this research was to found out the combination of solvent volume treatment, extraction time, and microwave power that produces optimum yield and analysis of extract quality characteristics. Microwave-assisted extraction process used 10 g of butterfly pea powder with a solvent volume of 150 ml to 250 ml, extraction time of 3 minutes to 7 minutes, and power by 30% to 70%. This study used the experimental methods and optimization processes with The Respon Surface Methodology (RSM) type Box-Behnken Design (BBD). Optimum conditions of the extraction process were obtained with a solvent volume of 196 ml for 3 minutes, and microwave power of 30%.  The yield optimal response result was obtained by 53.39%, residual ethanol was 30.17%, total flavonoid compounds was 60.77 mgQE/g, specific gravity 1.082, pH 4.33 and color analysis L* 14.93, a* 0.14, b* -0.56, chromatic 0.56, hue 284.63 (Blue Purple), and TCD was in very different categories. This study analyzed that microwave-assisted extraction with variable solvent volume, time, and power affects the yield and quality characteristics of the extracts.

Abstract

Emping jagung merupakan salah satu produk olahan biji jagung yang memiliki nilai jual yang tinggi. Namun dalam proses pembuatan emping jagung terdapat beberapa kendala yaitu menghilangkan perikap dan tipcap dari biji jagung. Perikap dan tipcap emping jagung dapat dihilangkan dengan cara perebusan dengan penambahan CaCO3. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh lama perebusan dan konsentrasi CaCO3 terhadap mutu produk emping jagung. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah eksperimental laboratorium, Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) faktorial yang diharapkan dapat memberikan informasi mengenai pengaruh lama perebusan dan konsentrasi CaCO3 yang tepat sehingga menghasilkan produk emping jagung yang baik. Perlakuan pada penelitian ini terdiri dari dua faktor yaitu lama perebusan dengan suhu 950C selama 60 menit, 90 menit dan 120 menit dan penambahan CaCO3 dengan konsentrasi 1%, 1,5% dan 2 % dari berat kering jagung dan 0% sebagai kontrol dengan dua kali ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi perlakuan emping jagung dengan lama perebusan 120 menit dengan penambahan CaCO3 sebanyak 2% merupakan perlakuan terbaik dengan paremeter yang diamati antara lain kadar air 7,53%, kadar abu 2,26%, protein 8,72%, kadar lemak 3,20%, kadar karbohidrat 84,11%, Nilai Hue 74,615, rendemen total 69,9%, Kandungan Ca 0,2321%.

Abstract

VCO contains of lauric acid that perform to smooth and to moisturize the skin. Castor oil has ricinoleic acid that serves to protect the skin. Therefore, both of the oil are suitable to be the raw material for liquid soap making. This study aimed were to produce a liquid soap, to determine the exact concentration of VCO and castor oil for liquid soap and to find out the effect of VCO and Castor Oil concentrations to the characteristics of liquid soap. The method used was laboratory experimental method with descriptive analysis. The treatments in this study were A =concentrations of VCO 100 %, B = concentrations of VCO 80 % and castor oil 20 %, C = concentrations of VCO 50 % and castor oil 50 %, D = concentrations of VCO 20 % and castor oil 80 %, and E = concentrations of castor oil 100 %,  from 200 gram soap base. The parameter observed for liquid soap included chemical properties, physical properties of soap, and organoleptic test. The result shows that all treatments complies the requirement SNI 06-4085-1996. The formula of liquid soap with treatment B was revealed as the best product with 0.01 % of total alkali content, pH value of 9.16 , specific gravity 1.06, and total plate count 5colonies/g. This technology process of natural liquid soap production with the VCO and castor oil could be develop and apply in industrial scale.

Abstract

As world biodiesel production increases, glycerol production as a by product of the biodiesel production process also increases. Glycerol is a compound that is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, care products, food, and cosmetics. Philippine tung is one of the sources of biodiesel raw material which is very potential to be developed in Indonesia and the yield of glycerol produced from the transesterification process can reach 19%. This study aims to purify and determine the characteristics of glycerol as a by-product of philippine tung biodiesel production. Glycerol quality analyzed included appearance, glycerol content, KOH content, soap content, water content and density. Based on the results of the research, it is known that the characteristics of glycerol as a byproduct of philippine tung biodiesel production are viscous dark liquid appearance, 2,6348% glycerol content, 2,4160% KOH content, 11,9563% soap content, 10,3441% moisture content, and 1,0955 density, while the characteristics of glycerol after neutralization has appearance of light brown viscous liquid, 87.8913% glycerol content, 11.8576% moisture content, and 1.2537 density. In addition, the yield of purification process also calculated, included neutralization yields of 90.6195%, separation yield of 39,3090%, and total yield of 38,6842%.Keywords: Glycerol, Purification, Philippine Tung, Characterization

Abstract

The vacuum-pneumatic type of the modified shallot skin sheller (MPB TEP-0315) has to be specified its technical and economical feasibility. An explanatory descriptive analysis has been employed to observe, measure, and re-account the details. Results from performance test showed that its theoretical and actual capacities were 52.48 kg/h and 31.24 kg/h, respectively at a machine efficiency of 59.60 percent at a required power (for compressor and decompressor) of 2092.6 W and at a shelling yield of 70.20 percent. The average level of noissiness was 69.25 dBA. Whilst the average machine vibration with or without load were 0.67 mm/s and 1.67 mm/s, respectively. Based on economic analysis this shelling business would be reasonable at a net present value (NPV) of Rp 30.618.320,- at an internal rate of return (IRR) of 68.83%, where the benefit cost ratio (BCR) would be 1.20. While the pay back period (PBP) would be reached in the 2nd year of investation. Keywords: economic analysis, shelling machine, performance test ABSTRAK Mesin pengupas kulit bawang Tipe Vakum-Pneumatik (MPB TEP-0315) hasil modifikasi perlu dideskripsikan spesifikasi dan kelayakan ekonominya. Metode analisis deskriptif eksplanatori digunakan untuk mengamati mengukur, dan menghitung kinerja mesin serta kinerja ekonomi. Hasil uji kinerja menunjukkan bahwa kapasitas teoritis dan aktual mesin berturut-turut adalah 14,57 g/detik, dan 8,67 g/detik dengan efisiensi mesin 59,60%, dan pada kebutuhan daya (untuk kompresor dan dekompresor) 2092,6 W rendemen pengupasan 70,20%. Tingkat kebisingan mesin rata-rata 69,25 dBA. Sementara getaran mesin rata-rata dengan dan tanpa beban beruturut-turut adalah 0,67 mm/s dan 1,67 mm/s. Berdasarkan analisis ekonomi usaha pengupasan bawang merah memenuhi syarat pada nilai bersih sekarang (net present value, NPV) Rp 30.618.320,- , laju pengembalian modal (internal rate of return, IRR) 68,83%, rasio laba-biaya (benefit cost ratio, BCR) 1,20. Sedangkan periode pengembalian modal (pay back period, PBP) investasi tercapai pada tahun ke-2. Kata kunci: analisis ekonomi, mesin pengupas, uji kinerja

Abstract

Dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus polyrhizus) contains anthocyanin which can be used as a potential natural colorant. Anthocyanins can be taken through the extraction process. The extraction of anthocyanin was performed by UAE (Ultrasound Assisted Extraction) method. UAE was chosen because it can result greater extraction efficiency and shorter operating times compared to conventional method. This study aims was to determine the effects of different amplitude and extraction times on the characteristics of dragron fruit peels extract using UAE. The control used was maceration method. The operating amplitude were evaluated at two levels 65% and 95%. Ultrasonic processor of 500 W output with frequency 20 kHz, solid-solvent ratio 1: 20, 60 mesh particle size with 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 45 minutes extraction times. The solvent used was aquadest with citric acid 10%. The method used was laboratory experiments using descriptive analysis. Characteristics of dragron fruit peel extracts investigated were total yield, residual solvent content, specific gravity, total anthocyanin, pH, and colour characteristics. The results showed that the dragon fruit peel extracts with amplitude 65% and extraction time of 45 minutes was the best treatment with total yield 10.62%, residual solvent content 37.50%, spesific gravity 1.2198, total anthocyanin content 29.640 ppm, pH 2.80, respectively. Based on hue angle (23.42o) the dragon fruit peel extracts obtained was resulting in red colour. Meanwhile, control treatment revealed that total yield was 9.44%, residual solvent content was 52.67%, spesific gravity 1.0609, total anthocyanin content 24.074 ppm, pH 3.06, and hue angle 33.16 o. It proven that UAE could increase the effectiveness of anthocyanin extraction and reduce residual solvent content of dragon fruit peel extracts compared to maceration. Hence, the present study makes influences of ultrasound technique on physico-chemical characteristics during extraction.

Abstract

Cilembu sweet potato are local superior varieties from Cilembu Village, Sumedang District, West Java. Sweet taste like honey is produced through the process of planting at a certain height, ripening after post-harvest, and baked using an oven. The policy of converting fuel oil to gas fuel has implications for the baking of Cilembu yams which previously used Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) ovens. But along with the limited availability and the high price of kerosene demanding the modification of the grill oven using Liquified Petroleum Gas. This study aims to conduct a process study and analyze the financial feasibility business of cilembu sweet potato baking. The method used in this study is an experimental method that was collaborated with descriptive methods to analyze the financial feasibility of cilembu sweet potato baking. The results showed that the average temperature of the baking room was 138 0C, effective baking capacity of 6.64 kg / hour, consumption rate of LPG 0.44 kg / hour, rate of decrease in average weight of Cilembu sweet potato during the baking process of 5.66 grams per minutes for grade C and 3.68 grams per minute for grade B with yields of cilembu sweet potato baking produced at 77.38% and loss weights of 22.62%. Based on the financial feasibility analysis obtained HPP Rp. 14,132.72 / kg, NPV Rp. 73,154,539 / month, BCR 1.28, IRR 20.06% and capital will return in the eighth month.

Abstract

Sansevieria or known as tongue-in-law plant is an ornamental plant that is quite popular in Indonesia. This plant is very easily cultivated, easy to grow in areas with less water and sunlight. This plant contains potential natural fibers used as raw material requirements for textile industry, specifically in fabric making. The aims of this research were to determine the production process consisting and analyzing the characteristics of woven fabrics from the leaves of the tongue-in-law plant. The method of fibers extraction used the mechanical decortication process and making woven fabric is done using ATBM. The research method used is descriptive method. Based on the results of the study, it is known that the woven cloth of tongue-in-law has color characteristics with a value of L* 69.73; a* 1.86; b* 17,38; H 83,88. Besides that, it is known the mechanical characteristics of the tongue-in-law woven fabric, the tensile strength of the fabric, the weft direction of 46.05 kg and the warp direction of 19.96 kg; weft direction stretch 22% and stretch direction of the warp of 55.20%; weft direction tear strength 19.17% and wrap direction 4.60%; and air penetrating power 116.2 cm3/cm2/s.The value of the tensile strength of the tongue-in-law woven fabric produced in the warp direction does not meet the standards of SNI 08-0056-2006 woven fabric quality requirements for suit.Therefore, woven fabric produced is intended as a craft material.

Abstract

Minyak nilam merupakan salah satu komoditas minyak atsiri andalan Indonesia yang sangat prospektif di pasaran. Untuk meningkatkan mutu minyak nilam yaitu dengan menghasilkan kandungan patchouli alcohol yang tinggi. Pada proses kristalisasi patchouli alcohol perlu dilakukan optimalisasi untuk mendapatkan rendemen dan mutu patchouli alcohol yaitu dengan menggunakan pelarut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh perbandingan pelarut dalam proses kristalisasi patchouli alcohol terhadap rendemen dan mutu kristal yang dihasilkan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif dengan analisis korelasi-regresi. Penelitian ini diawali dengan proses distilasi fraksinasi vakum minyak nilam untuk meningkatkan kadar patchouli alcohol dalam distilat. Pada proses kristalisasi digunakan lima kondisi variabel pelarut yaitu 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, dan 50% dan satu perlakuan kontrol. Pengamatan yang dilakukan yaitu rendemen dan mutu kristal patchouli alcohol meliputi uji warna, bulk density dan partikel density, dan melting point. Nilai rendemen kristal dan yield terbesar pada perlakuan volume pelarut 10% yaitu 52,77% dan 87,93%. Perolehan mutu yang terbaik yaitu uji warna pada perlakuan volume pelarut 50% sebesar 100,0533, bulk density pada perlakuan volume pelarut 10% sebesar 0,4351 g/mL, true density pada perlakuan 30% sebesar 1,0011 g/mL, melting point pada perlakuan 40% sebesar 57℃.
