Abstract

The phenomenon of poverty in coastal communities often intersects with the social structure of the community itself. Effective mangrove management requires an interdisciplinary approach that combines social, cultural, economic, and ecological aspects. Social structure aspects, including social hierarchy, access to resources, local wisdom norms, and community networks, have not been widely integrated into mangrove management analysis. Although local wisdom is an important potential, its integration into mangrove management schemes is still weak. This study aims to analyze how the social structure of coastal communities and their local wisdom contribute to or hinder sustainable mangrove forest management. This study uses the Functionalist theory according to Patron-Client and Geertz's local wisdom theory. The research method uses a library research approach with the help of the Publish or Perish 8 application by searching 150 articles related to the research topic. The results of the study explain that social structure and local wisdom play a very important role in supporting the management and conservation of mangroves in coastal areas. The social structure of coastal communities is commonly seen in the majority of jobs as fishermen with a social structure of bosses or toke, skippers or captains, fishermen laborers or members. In preserving local wisdom, the coastal communities of Bengkalis still believe in myths and customs that have developed in the community, such as the semah laut ritual, ikan terubuk, and the prohibition of cutting young mangroves.

Abstract

The shalawatan tradition represents a vital form of religious expression and cultural identity within Nahdlatul Ulama that continues to thrive amid modern social change. This study explores how social capital sustains the shalawatan tradition organized by the Gerakan Pemuda Ansor (Ansor Youth Movement) in Riau Province. It focuses on three main dimensions of social capital. Trust, social networks, and social norms. Along with strategies to strengthen them. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from 20 informants: the regional GP Ansor leader, kyai figures, pesantren networks, regular congregants, and local branch heads in Siak and Pelalawan. The analysis employed the social capital frameworks of Putnam, Coleman, and Fukuyama. The findings show that trust is the most dominant form of social capital, reflected in the integrity of leaders, financial transparency, and consistent spiritual service free of political interests. Strengthening social capital is achieved through maintaining trustworthy leadership, expanding inclusive networks, integrating Islamic education into activities, and promoting collective participation through mutual assistance. The continuity of shalawatan is also supported by charismatic kyais and institutional backing from Nahdlatul Ulama, though challenges persist in community resistance and limited managerial capacity. This study highlights that the interplay among trust, networks, and norms generates effective collective action, ensuring the resilience of religious traditions amid modernization.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and comprehend the structural and functional responses of the community in Tambang District, Kampar Regency, to the construction of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road interchange. This large-scale infrastructure development has triggered the inevitable phenomenon of urban agglomeration, changing the physical and socio-economic landscape of the region. This study uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using an interactive model. Tambang Subdistrict evolved into a strategic hub characterized by substantial alterations in spatial planning, land utilization, and the reconfiguration of ownership. Functionally, mobility drastically improved, but the economic impacts on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were profoundly varying. The findings reveal an economic dichotomy: MSMEs, like Dapur Aru, experienced increased turnover due to expanded accessibility, while traditional MSMEs, like Lopek Bugi, faced a decline due to disruption in traditional access patterns. These results support the Growth Pole Theory but offer a nuanced contribution by showing how the developmental effects are uneven at the micro-community level, aligning with Structural Functionalism. The conclusion underscores the urgency of more targeted and adaptive MSME mitigation and empowerment policies to ensure local socio-economic sustainability amid development.

Abstract

This article examines the buffer zone of Tesso Nilo National Park as an ecofeminist arena where interactions among women, ecology, and social resilience evolve amid deforestation, encroachment, and contested land use. Addressing research gaps that marginalize indigenous women’s conservation roles, the study explores how Batang Nilo women perform forest guardianship and sustain local ecological balance. Employing a qualitative participatory method in several buffer zone villages, twelve indigenous women involved in resource management participated through interviews, focus groups, observations, and participatory mapping. Guided by a local ecofeminist perspective, thematic analysis reveals that women’s forest patrols, cultivation of native and medicinal plants, non-timber forest product use, and community-based eco-tourism actions embody a politics of care. These practices reinforce socio-ecological resilience and advocate for gender-inclusive spatial governance that acknowledges women not merely as beneficiaries but as pivotal ecological agents in sustaining forest life.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems play a critical role in coastal protection and the livelihoods of coastal communities, yet their sustainability is strongly influenced by how local people perceive mangrove existence and management. This study examines public perceptions of mangrove existence and management in Tanjung Medang and Teluk Rhu Villages, North Rupat District, and identifies factors shaping these perceptions. A quantitative descriptive approach was applied using a structured Likert-scale questionnaire. From a population of 1,514 households, 48 respondents were selected using Slovin’s formula with a 10% margin of error and simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a one-sample t-test with a benchmark value of 108 (75% of the maximum ideal score). The results show that public perception of mangrove existence is positive across all components (total score 2,493), with the highest score in mangrove condition/state (1,212). Perceptions of mangrove management are fairly good (total score 3,671), although supervision/monitoring is rated negative (938), indicating a key weakness in oversight. Most respondents demonstrate high perception (85.4%) and high knowledge (87.5%) regarding mangrove existence and management. Factor analysis indicates that knowledge is the dominant factor influencing perception (score 2,069), while social, economic, and cultural factors are not dominant. The one-sample t-test confirms that the overall perception score is significantly above the benchmark (t = 9.342; p < .001; mean difference = 20.708). These findings suggest that strengthening mangrove governance in North Rupat should prioritize improving supervision and monitoring mechanisms, while sustaining community education and outreach to reinforce knowledge-based support for conservation.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to create and validate the scale. A total of 126 workers from a palm oil plant in Riau province were included in this investigation. Win step program is used to analyze data using the Rasch model. This is supported by research. In the unsatisfactory category, the Cronbach alpha value, which measures the overall interaction between people and items, is included. Furthermore, the importance of person reliability as a measure of the consistency of respondents' responses is categorized as extremely bad. In the meantime, item reliability as a measure of the instrument's quality falls into a distinct category. The standard items' average difficulty level is below the ability level of the palm oil mill's managers. As a result, palm oil mill management readily approves this natural environment plan instrument item.

Abstract

Restoration based on Participatory rural appraisal is applied as the main carrying capacity for the successful restoration of peat ecosystems. This program is implemented through the approach of Rewetting, Revegeation and Revitalization. The research objective analyzes PRA-based restoration efforts and how the move will proceed. The data is obtained through interviews and analyzed qualitatively descriptively. The study found that peat wetting activities were carried out through the construction of canal barriers and supporting infrastructure, while replanting was implemented in line with economic revitalization programs. Not only forest timbers, food crops including pineapples are cultivated as an alternative source of livelihood. Women's groups are encouraged to actively process economic products, namely pineapple dodol and pineapple juice. The program is successful but marketing has not been maximal.
