Abstract

Vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is an export commodity from the fisheries sub-sector which has high economic value. The development of aquaculture systems from traditional to intensive has the potential for disease attacks. Control of the spread of the disease must be done as early as possible, one method of prevention is using immunostimulants. An alternative source of immunostimulants that can be used to increase the immune system of shrimp is octopus (Octopus sp.) ink. Octopus ink is generally not used or thrown away when the octopus meat is processed. Research on octopus ink is also minimal compared to squid ink and cuttlefish ink. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the potential of octopus ink as an immunostimulant for vaname shrimp. It is known that the content of octopus ink consists mostly of alkaloids, melanin, amino acids, and carboxylic acids. Octopus ink has various roles based on its compound content such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiretroviral, anticancer, anti-ulcerogenic, anti-inflammatory, antivirus, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-proliferative. From the results of the literature study, it is explicitly necessary to carry out further research to find out more complete compounds content in octopus ink so that its potential as an immunostimulant in vaname shrimp cultivation can be identified more clearly.

Abstract

In the effort of developing marine aquaculture, the hatchery stage is essential. During this stage, natural feed cannot be separated, because larvae generally are plankton feeders. Natural feed for fish is organisms in the water, which can be plants like phytoplankton and animals like zooplankton. With the increasing aquaculture activities in Indonesia, the demand for natural feed also increases. Organisms needed for natural feed, such as phytoplankton, can be obtained by collecting them from nature. However, to meet the availability of natural feed in fish farming, it is now done by cultivating them so that natural feed can be available sustainably. The method used in this research is a qualitative method by observing the growth and water quality of Tetraselmis chuii culture. Based on the research results, the best treatment for culturing Tetraselmis chuii is using Erlenmeyer culture with aeration because the cell growth reaches 700 x 10 4 cells/ml. Data on water quality results in intermediate Tetraselmis chuii culture are good for growth. The water quality in the culture tank is relatively stable at 25°C, pH 8, salinity ranges between 33-34 ppt, nitrate ranges between 13.6-17.8 ppm, and phosphate ranges between 2.32-7.6 ppm. The problem that occurred during intermediate culture is the contamination of other organisms. Prevention against contamination is by maintaining the sterility and specifications of the equipment used.

Abstract

Mangosteen peel contains various bioactive compounds, such as xanthones, flavonoids, and tannins, which have attracted researchers' attention as potential natural immunostimulants to enhance the immune system of fish and other aquatic organisms. In this article, various recent studies examining the effects of mangosteen peel extract on the immune response of fish and aquatic organisms have been reviewed. Some research findings include increased phagocytosis activity, survival rate, and more active total hematocrit in species such as common carp (Cyprinus carpio), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) treated with mangosteen peel extract. Furthermore, administering mangosteen peel extract can promote growth in aquatic animals. In conclusion, the use of mangosteen peel extract as an immunostimulant in aquaculture holds the potential to enhance the immune response and resilience of fish and aquatic organisms. Improved immune responses can help protect them from pathogens and diseases (such as Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio harvey), as well as increase survival and productivity in aquaculture systems. Although these research findings are promising, further studies are needed to better understand the detailed mechanisms of action of mangosteen peel as an immunostimulant, and to evaluate optimal dosages and potential side effects. The use of mangosteen peel as an immunostimulant could serve as an effective natural alternative to strengthen the immune system of fish and aquatic organisms, but more comprehensive research is necessary before widespread and safe implementation in aquaculture practices.

Abstract

The aquaculture industry continues to grow, but its production encounters problems, one of which is disease outbreaks that can hinder the growth and sustainability of fish production. Research on the use of immunostimulants as an environmentally friendly solution to enhance the resilience of aquatic organisms against diseases is becoming increasingly important. One natural substance that can be used as an immunostimulant is Sargassum seaweed, a type of brown algae found abundantly in tropical and subtropical waters. This study aims to present a recent review of the potential of Sargassum as an immunostimulant in the field of aquaculture. Thisalgae is known to contain various bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides (alginate and fucoidan), polyphenols, and natural pigments, which are believed to have the ability to enhance the immune response of aquatic organisms. Its application has been tested both in vitro and in vivo. The addition of extracts from various types of Sargassum can be done through injection, immersion, or adding them to the feed of cultured organisms. Extracts from several types of Sargassum have been proven to enhance the immune system, growth, and survival of aquatic organisms, as well as to combat disease outbreaks. The application of Sargassum as an immunostimulant is an environmentally friendly solution to combat disease outbreaks

Abstract

This review article focuses on the administration of ketapang leaf extract to enhance non-specific immunity in fish. Ketapang leaves have been of interest as a potential immunostimulant in aquaculture to boost the non-specific immune response in fish. In this review, various studies exploring the effects of ketapang leaf extract on the non-specific immune response of fish have been examined. The findings suggest that the administration of ketapang leaf extract can lead to an increase in non-specific immune parameters, such as phagocytosis activity, lysozyme activity, and total protein content. The potential use of ketapang leaf extract as an immunostimulant in aquaculture shows promising results in enhancing the non-specific immune response of fish. Strengthening the non-specific immune system can help fish combat various pathogens and diseases, thereby improving their overall health and survival in aquaculture settings. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and optimal dosage of ketapang leaf extract as an immunostimulant. Additionally, considering its potential positive impact on fish health, the use of ketapang leaf extract in aquaculture warrants comprehensive studies to ensure its safe and effective implementation.

Abstract

Eucheuma cottonii has been extensively studied in the field of aquaculture due to its potential as a natural immunostimulant. In this review, we explore the impact of using Eucheuma cottonii as an immunostimulant in aquatic animals. Based on recent literature, we conclude that Eucheuma cottonii can enhance the immune response in aquatic organisms, including increasing Total Haemocyte Count, phagocytic activity, and gene expression related to the immune system, thus enabling aquatic organisms to combat bacterial and viral infections. The mechanism of action of Eucheuma cottonii is believed to involve bioactive compounds such as sulfated polysaccharides that stimulate non-specific immune responses. The implications of using Eucheuma cottonii in aquaculture include the potential to improve the health and production performance of aquatic animals. However, challenges such as quality control of extracts, interspecies effectiveness, and potential environmental risks need to be addressed. Suggestions for further research include a deeper understanding of the mechanism of action, comparative studies among species, development of production technologies, environmental risk management, as well as education and training for aquaculture farmers. With careful and sustainable approaches, the use of Eucheuma cottonii as an immunostimulant has the potential to enhance the sustainability of the aquaculture industry and the overall health of aquatic animals.
