This research aims to analyse a short film titled "Kos - Kosan", which address the issue of prejudice and stereotypes related to religious conflict, focusing on the subject-object position, author-reader positions depicted in the scenes shown. Using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis and a descriptive qualitative analysis method, this study seeks to describe the impact on women and explore the perspective and actions taken by viewers of the short film plot towards the object, women. This study found that the conflict that occurs is primarily due to misunderstandings in communication, where the subject directs the object toward an understanding that negative connotation. Similarly, viewers tend to perceive women in terms of immorality and promiscuity rather than discrimination and intolerance. One of the factors causing misunderstandings in communication between the actors of this short film is nonverbal communication, including facial expressions and body language, which often lead to misinterpretation.

Abstract

One strategy to pique viewers' interest is to display contentious topics, cases, and sources. Metro TV successfully achieved this with their Special Report, "Becoming a Suspect, Rafael Alun Talks". This study was conducted to learn more about Metro TV's editorial approach to airing contentious sources on the Rafael Alun episode of the Special Report show. The idea of editorial strategy and the Hierarchy of Influence theory are used as analytical tools in this study. A case study using a qualitative approach is the methodology employed, and post positivism is the paradigm. The study's findings demonstrate that Metro TV's editorial strategy for airing the Rafael Alun edition of the Special Report consists of five key components: (1) picking topics that are popular and relevant to the general public, as well as their sources; (2) choosing the concept for the program; (3) choosing the team that produces the content; (4) processing the content in line with editorial and editorial direction; and (5) evaluation.

Abstract

The rapid transformation of the media industry, marked by conglomeration and spatialization, raises concerns about the commodification of media workers. This study investigates the practice of media spatialization within PT: Media Nusantara Citra (MNC) and its impact on the commodification of reporters and camera persons. Drawing on Vincent Mosco’s theory of political economy and Foucault’s power relations framework, the study employs a critical case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants and observations, complemented by secondary data. The findings reveal three typologies of spatialization—open, closed, and hidden—and their implications for media workers, including labor, psychological, economic, and capability exploitation. While efficient for the corporation, the integration system has led to excessive workloads, disproportionate wages, and diminished autonomy for media workers. Theoretically, this study enriches the discourse on media political economy by affirming the relevance of spatialization in understanding contemporary media practices and worker commodification. Practically, the findings advocate for strengthening trade unions and regulatory enforcement to safeguard media workers’ rights and promote a more equitable media ecosystem. The study underscores the need for corporate strategies prioritizing employee well-being to mitigate the adverse effects of conglomeration-driven spatialization.
