Abstract

This study aims to improve the learning outcomes of students at MAN Bandung Barat on the topic of Fungi through the implementation of the Direct Instruction learning model supported by PowerPoint media. The background of this research stems from the low level of students’ conceptual understanding of the material, indicating the need for a more structured and guided instructional approach. The research employed a quantitative method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The subjects of the study were Grade X students enrolled in biology classes during the current semester. The research procedure included administering a pretest, conducting the learning intervention using the Direct Instruction model facilitated by PowerPoint, and administering a posttest to measure changes in learning outcomes. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, a normality test using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov method, and the calculation of the N-Gain score to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The results showed a significant increase in the average scores from the pretest to the posttest, indicating a positive improvement after the treatment was administered. The normality test results confirmed that the data were normally distributed (p > 0.05), allowing for appropriate subsequent analyses. The average N-Gain score fell into the moderately effective category, suggesting that the learning intervention meaningfully enhanced students’ understanding. Therefore, this study concludes that the application of the Direct Instruction model supported by PowerPoint is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes on the topic of Fungi. The findings further imply that structured instructional models combined with visual media can optimize students’ comprehension of biological concepts.

Abstract

This study addresses the fundamental question: How effective is PhET Interactive Simulation in enhancing high school students' conceptual understanding of projectile motion, a topic prone to misconceptions due to its two-dimensional vector analysis? Positioned within improving physics education quality through digital visualization tools, the researcher employed a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design on n = 35 Grade XI students. Data collection used conceptual understanding tests analyzed via normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov/ Shapiro-Wilk), paired sample t-test, and Normalized Gain (N-Gain). Results showed pretest mean = 43.76 (SD=12.15) increased to posttest mean =74.14 (SD = 11.72), a 69.42% gain with t = -13.581 (df = 34, Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05) rejecting H₀. N-Gain ⟨g⟩ = 0.54 (medium) distributed as 60% medium, 25.71% high (≥0.7), 14.29% low (<0.3). PhET’s real-time manipulation of launch angle (θ) and initial velocity (v₀) visualized independent horizontal-vertical motion, correcting 65-75% misconceptions via multimodal representations (trajectory, v-t graphs, constant vertical g-vectors). Conclusion: PhET Interactive Simulation proves effective for projectile motion conceptual understanding, bridging abstract formulas (R = v₀²sin2θ/g) with dynamic phenomena. Limitations: short 4-day intervention, no control group. Recommendations: teacher training, guided inquiry worksheets targeting N-Gain > 0.7.

Abstract

This research endeavors to evaluate the efficacy of implementing the Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) model, augmented by a Deep Learning methodology, for the enhancement of critical thinking abilities and academic achievements in eighth-grade students at SMP Plus Al-Ittihad Cianjur, specifically concerning the human circulatory system. A quasi-experimental methodology, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest framework, was adopted for this investigation. A cohort of 30 students was chosen via purposive sampling to constitute the study's sample. Data acquisition was performed utilizing pretest and posttest instruments, followed by analysis through descriptive statistical methods, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, and N-Gain analysis. The findings revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Sig. 0.000 < 0.05). However, the average N-Gain score was 0.1311 or 13.11%, categorized as low and less effective. This indicates that although the IBL model with a Deep Learning approach has the potential to enhance critical thinking skills, its implementation has not yet been optimal. Contributing factors include students’ low readiness for active learning and teachers’ limited ability to facilitate reflective processes. Therefore, further teacher training and student engagement strategies are needed to maximize the effectiveness of this integrated approach in improving science learning quality in secondary education.

Abstract

Laboratory practicum is essential for understanding abstract concepts, and the Inquiry Based Learning model is often applied in this context. This study aims to measure the level of effectiveness of implementing inquiry based learning in an electronics practicum on analog proximity sensor material towards improving student concept understanding. This study uses a quantitative approach with a One-group pretest-posttest design involving 27 3rd-semester students from the Physics Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, hypothesis testing (paired t-test), and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the pre-test (Sig. 0.054) and post-test (Sig. 0.089) data were normally distributed. The t-test showed a very significant difference (Sig. 0.000) between the pre-test (46.29) and post-test (73.70) mean scores. Despite a significant increase, the N-Gain Percent analysis showed an average effectiveness of 51.93%, which falls into the "Less Effective" category. There was a high disparity in results, where 37% of students were still "Not Effective". Factors such as the diversity of students' prior knowledge, material complexity, and guidance effectiveness were identified as causes for the non-optimal effectiveness. This study concludes that inquiry based learning needs to be integrated with differentiated learning).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences in the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning, Video-Based Learning, and   models on students' cognitive learning outcomes in food additives material. The research approach used a quantitative approach with a posttest-only control group design involving three eighth-grade classes at SMPN 27 Bandung as research subjects selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through a validated learning outcome test instrument and then analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis nonparametric test and the Mann–Whitney follow-up test because the normality assumption was not met.  The results showed that the highest median learning outcome score was obtained in the Discovery Learning model (90.00), followed by Video-Based Learning (80.00) and Direct Instruction (70.00). The Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significance value of 0.029 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in learning outcomes between the three learning models. Specifically, the follow-up test showed that the Discovery Learning model had a significantly different impact compared to Direct Instruction, while the Video-Based Learning model had a different impact compared to Direct Instruction. These findings confirm that knowledge construction through independent discovery activities is more effective in improving science concept understanding. Teachers are advised to integrate exploratory learning to minimize the gap in student learning outcomes.
