Abstract

In the context of globalization, interaction among individuals from different cultural backgrounds has become increasingly common in social, educational, and professional domains. Intercultural communication competence (ICC) is understood as the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in such interactions, which involves not only linguistic proficiency but also pragmatic awareness. This study seeks to investigate the role of pragmatics in intercultural communication competence by examining participants’ perceptions of pragmatic use in intercultural communication. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, the study involved 15 seventh-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. Data were gathered through closed-ended written interview questions distributed online via Google Forms. The data were analyzed qualitatively by interpreting response patterns related to pragmatic competence. The findings reveal that participants largely acknowledge the significance of pragmatic awareness, particularly in relation to politeness strategies, understanding implied meanings, and sensitivity to cultural norms, in achieving effective intercultural communication. Furthermore, the results indicate that grammatical accuracy alone does not ensure communicative success across cultures, as pragmatic competence plays a vital role in reducing misunderstanding and promoting appropriate interaction. This study concludes that pragmatics is a fundamental component of intercultural communication competence and emphasizes the need to integrate pragmatic awareness into language education to enhance intercultural communicative effectiveness.

Abstract

This international Community Service Program aimed to strengthen students’ pedagogical competence through English teaching practice in a multicultural Islamic school. The program was conducted at Eakkapapsasanawich Islamic School (EKP), Krabi, Thailand, from November 10, 2025, to January 5, 2026. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied through 50 speaking-intensive teaching sessions involving 77 secondary students. Teaching strategies included Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Indonesian song-based ice-breakers, educational games, and simple digital media. Data were collected through observation, activity logbooks, lesson plans, and reflections. The results showed a 42% improvement in students’ speaking ability, the production of two teaching modules, and the implementation of 85 supporting academic and non-academic activities. This program contributed to enhancing pedagogical competence and cultural awareness among pre-service teachers.

Abstract

AbstractWriting is one of skills that has to be mastered by students because by writing the writers can express ideas and thought into a good written. In SMA/MA, students often get difficulties in rewriting or paraphrasing the news item that they have read by using their own words. This matter is caused of student’s lack of vocabulary, structure, relating sentence to other sentences, also that they do not understand about the elements of the paragraph that builds a text, and they do not understand a generic structure of news item text. This research took the population of the tenth grade students of MAs Daarul Hikmah Tangerang by using cluster sampling. There are 4 (nine) classes of the tenth grade. Total population is 140 students. One of the classes was the sample. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the result of the students writing ability in paraphrasing news item on the tenth grade was Fair (50.86). There is no student got excellent category, 3 students got good (8.57) category, 20 students got fair (57.14) category, and 12 students got poor (34.29) category.Key word : Writing Ability, News Item, Text

Abstract

In this era of the 5.0 industrial revolution, the importance of communication skills in English is becoming more pronounced, including in the field of nursing. Speaking is one of the four core skills for effective communication in the English language. The purpose of this paper is to describe nursing students’ experiences of using TikTok Application, a short-video sharing platform, as an alternative tool to help them practicing their speaking skills. The subjects of this study were 31 second-semester students of Nursing Study Program at a private University in Tangerang. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental approach with one group pretest-posttest design. The findings revealed that using the TikTok application can help students to improve their speaking skills significantly. In addition, they also gave positive responses toward using TikTok in learning English language as it could make them more relaxed and enjoyed while practicing their speaking skills.

Abstract

This critical review paper examines the distinct yet highly interconnected roles of semantics and pragmatics within the broader framework of modern linguistics, with particular emphasis on their application in contemporary academic discourse. Semantics primarily investigates the literal, conventional, and truth-conditional meanings of words, phrases, and sentences, whereas pragmatics explores how contextual factors, speaker intentions, shared knowledge, cultural backgrounds, and situational circumstances shape meaning during communication. Employing a qualitative, conceptual, and critical review approach, this study analyzes various forms of academic communication, including scholarly articles, peer-review comments, classroom discussions, seminar presentations, and editorial interactions, to illustrate how meaning is constructed through the interaction between linguistic forms and contextual interpretation. The analysis reveals that the boundaries between semantics and pragmatics are often fluid, dynamic, and mutually influential, particularly in academic settings where effective communication depends on both precise language use and contextual awareness. The findings further demonstrate that relying exclusively on literal meanings is insufficient to explain the complexity of human communication, as successful interpretation frequently requires consideration of implicit meanings, inferencing processes, politeness strategies, and discourse conventions. Therefore, an integrated perspective combining semantic and pragmatic principles provides a more comprehensive understanding of language use in academic environments. This paper concludes that mastering the semantics–pragmatics interface is essential for educators, students, researchers, and scholars to communicate effectively, interpret academic texts accurately, engage in critical discussions, and navigate the linguistic, social, and cultural complexities that characterize contemporary academic communication in increasingly globalized educational contexts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Digital storytelling on YouTube has become an increasingly popular form of communication; however, studies investigating illocutionary speech acts in Indonesian horror storytelling remain limited. Previous research has predominantly examined educational, promotional, and podcast discourse, while horror narratives have received comparatively little scholarly attention despite their distinctive communicative characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the types and communicative functions of illocutionary speech acts employed in Nadia Omara’s YouTube video entitled Impian Satpam. This study adopted a descriptive qualitative design using a pragmatic approach. The data consisted of utterances containing illocutionary speech acts extracted from the selected video uploaded to Nadia Omara’s official YouTube channel. Data were collected through observation and documentation, including repeated viewing, transcription, identification, classification, and interpretation of the utterances. The analysis was conducted based on Searle’s classification of illocutionary speech acts. The findings revealed 35 utterances containing illocutionary speech acts, comprising representative (28.57%), directive (34.29%), commissive (14.29%), and expressive (22.85%) acts, whereas declarative acts were absent. Directive acts emerged as the dominant category, indicating that the storyteller primarily employed language to invite audience participation, provide guidance, and sustain interaction throughout the narrative. These findings demonstrate that illocutionary speech acts function as an essential pragmatic strategy for conveying information, expressing emotions, and enhancing audience engagement, thereby contributing to the effectiveness of contemporary digital storytelling on YouTube. ABSTRAK Digital storytelling di YouTube telah menjadi salah satu bentuk komunikasi yang semakin populer, namun penelitian yang mengkaji realisasi tindak tutur ilokusi dalam narasi horor Indonesia masih terbatas. Sebagian besar penelitian terdahulu berfokus pada wacana pendidikan, promosi, atau podcast, sehingga narasi horor masih relatif kurang mendapat perhatian meskipun memiliki karakteristik komunikasi yang khas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis jenis serta fungsi komunikatif tindak tutur ilokusi yang digunakan dalam video YouTube Nadia Omara berjudul Impian Satpam. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan pragmatik. Data penelitian berupa tuturan yang mengandung tindak tutur ilokusi yang diperoleh dari video yang diunggah pada kanal YouTube resmi Nadia Omara. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui teknik observasi, dokumentasi, transkripsi, identifikasi, klasifikasi, dan interpretasi, sedangkan analisis data didasarkan pada klasifikasi tindak tutur ilokusi menurut Searle. Hasil penelitian mengidentifikasi sebanyak 35 tuturan yang mengandung tindak tutur ilokusi, yang terdiri atas tindak tutur representatif (28,57%), direktif (34,29%), komisif (14,29%), dan ekspresif (22,85%), sedangkan tindak tutur deklaratif tidak ditemukan. Tindak tutur direktif merupakan kategori yang paling dominan, yang menunjukkan bahwa pencerita secara konsisten menggunakan bahasa untuk mengajak, memberikan arahan, dan mempertahankan keterlibatan audiens selama proses penceritaan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa tindak tutur ilokusi merupakan strategi pragmatik yang penting dalam memperkuat interaksi, keterlibatan emosional, dan efektivitas komunikasi dalam digital storytelling kontemporer di YouTube.

Abstract

This community service aimed to improve the English skills of students at Ban thama prao School in Thailand. They used the British Council’s Learn English Kids website. The program lasted four weeks and used technology-based learning for teachers and students. Starting with an introduction to the web, the activities continued with classroom learning implementation, evaluation, and reflection. The results of the program showed that students significantly improved their reading skills and increased their motivation to learn. In addition, teachers became better at using technology as a learning tool, despite barriers to internet access and technological devices. Recommendations include improving the technology infrastructure and ongoing training for teachers to ensure the sustainability of the program.
