Abstract

Academic writing is one of the essential skills that university students must acquire, especially in preparation for the IELTS writing test, which demands not only English language proficiency but also logical and systematic thinking skills. Although this skill is crucial, the majority of students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM) still demonstrate limited competence in academic writing, particularly for IELTS purposes. One strategic effort to enhance this skill is through a student mentoring program supported by the FMIPA International Students Community (FISCO), a group comprising students and alumni. This community serves as mentors and teaching assistants in the English for Subject Matter (ESM) program, which specifically guides students in the International Class Program (ICP) in mastering academic skills, with a focus on academic writing as a key component of the IELTS test. Although the mentors generally possess strong academic backgrounds, many of them still face challenges in effectively teaching academic writing techniques. Therefore, this community service activity aims to improve the academic writing skills of ICP mentors through the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The program was carried out in three main stages: (1) presentation of the material, (2) practical application of AI tools, and (3) interactive discussion. Evaluation results based on questionnaires distributed at the end of the training session indicated that all participants responded positively to the training and showed increased knowledge regarding key aspects of academic writing for IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2.

Abstract

This study focuses on the importance of teaching materials in the lecture process, particularly in the contextual teaching course at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation and questionnaires. The subjects of this study were students enrolled in the contextual teaching course, consisting of 69 students. The results of the study indicate that the majority of students do not have textbooks as learning resources for the contextual teaching course; the learning resources they commonly use are sourced from the internet. The findings also reveal that the application of biological concepts in contextual teaching is still limited, with few examples of its implementation available. Based on the results, information was obtained regarding subtopics that are difficult to understand in the contextual teaching course, particularly in the subtopic of assessment in contextual learning within the psychomotor domain. On the other hand, material that students find easy to understand is the application of contextual teaching in direct instruction. The results also show that 98.6% of students agree on the need to develop a teaching module. The preferred form of the teaching module among students is both print and electronic versions. Therefore, the development of a comprehensive teaching module is considered necessary to support the learning process. This study is expected to serve as a basis for the development of more effective teaching materials to support contextual teaching lectures.

Abstract

addresses the appeal of game-based learning for students. Despite the prevalence of game-based learning research, limited studies focus on non-digital approaches, particularly in English for Biology courses among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in higher education settings. Accordingly, this quantitative descriptive study aims to fill the research gap by exploring undergraduate students' attitude towards non-digital game-based learning in an English for Biology course. The study, conducted at the Biology Education Department, Universitas Negeri Makassar, involves 64 students who experienced non-digital game-based learning through a collaborative word-guessing game. The research instrument utilized in this study was an attitude questionnaire which demonstrates high validity and reliability. Results of data analysis indicate an overall positive attitude (72.81%) among the students towards non-digital game-based learning, emphasizing enjoyment, motivation, retention, and engagement. Students' favorable disposition could be attributed to the unconventional learning atmosphere created by game elements, including rules, challenges, feedback, and rewards. The study suggests educators consider integrating non-digital game-based learning, fostering enjoyment, engagement, and retention, while emphasizing the importance of autonomy in promoting intrinsic motivation for positive learning outcomes.
