Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of using the Memrise mobile app, specifically its New General Service List (NGSL) 1.01 flashcard sets, on English vocabulary acquisition among high school students. Recognizing vocabulary as a critical component of language mastery, this research addresses the challenges in vocabulary learning and the potential benefits of digital tools in enhancing language skills. This study employs a pre-experimental with one-group pre-test–post-test design. the study involved 35 tenth-grade students from Senior High School 1 Praya Timur. Then, the NGSL diagnostic test (NGSL vocabulary test with multiple choice form) was used to measure vocabulary knowledge before and after a five-week intervention with the Memrise app. The results of this study indicated significant improvements in vocabulary scores post-intervention, demonstrating the app's effectiveness. A positive correlation was found between the number of flashcard sets used and students' NGSLT scores. The findings suggest that digital learning platforms like Memrise can significantly enhance vocabulary acquisition, making learning more engaging and effective. The study recommends integrating such tools into educational practices to improve vocabulary learning outcomes. Future research should investigate the long-term effects and demographic variations in the effectiveness of digital vocabulary learning tools.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the vocabulary learning strategies used by students in learning English vocabulary and students’ problems faced in learning English vocabulary , particularly those in the English Education Study Program. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The tools of data collection were Photovoice and Structured interviews. Researchers used thematic analysis for the study, here were steps of thematic analysis were Familiarizing with the data, Generating initial codes, Defining and Naming themes, and the last Producing the report.  Based on data analysis, research results show that this research found that students use strategies in learning English vocabulary. particularly those students tend to rely more heavily on the "Discovery dimension" strategy when learning new vocabulary. This strategy involves actively seeking out and discovering new words, than the "Consolidation dimension" strategy focuses on reinforcing and developing vocabulary once it has been learned. Using Photovoice, where students take photos to show their learning, gave insights into their strategy.  It also showed that spelling is the hardest part of learning vocabulary for them, while understanding the meaning is the easiest. So, understanding these challenges can help develop more effective teaching strategies for vocabulary learning

Abstract

Abstract: Vocabulary plays a crucial role in English language acquisition, serving as the foundation for developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This study investigates the effectiveness of the semantic mapping technique in improving vocabulary learning and retention among seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Sakra Timur. This study employs a pre-experimental design, The study involves a single experimental group of 30 students who underwent pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test assessments. Data were analyzed using Repeated Measures ANCOVA to find out significant differences across testing phases. The results indicate that the semantic mapping technique significantly improved students' vocabulary learning, as evidenced by a substantial increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores (p = 0.007, n = 0.235). However, the technique did not significantly improve students' retention, as evidenced by the non-significant interaction between time and pre-test scores (p = 0,137, n = 0.077). These findings suggest that while semantic mapping is effective in facilitating initial vocabulary learning, its impact on long-term retention remains limited.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary to eighth-grade students at SMP Dwijendra Mataram in the 2024/2025 academic year. The school was selected as the research site because the researcher had direct teaching and observational experience during a four-month Kampus Mengajar program at the school. During the program, several challenges were observed in vocabulary learning, including students' low interest in reading, difficulties in memorizing words, and diverse student backgrounds. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was used. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the English teacher. The results showed that the teacher implemented three main strategies: formal practice (structured activities such as repetition and drilling), functional practice (context-based learning related to daily life), and memorization strategies (using visual media such as videos). These strategies were proven to improve students’ vocabulary mastery while also increasing their motivation and engagement in learning English.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Wordwall platform as an interactive medium for enhancing vocabulary learning among fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Jeringo. The study was driven by changes introduced through the 13 Curriculum, which resulted in the elimination of English lessons in early grades and limited access to adequate learning tools. Since 2022, the Merdeka Curriculum has been implemented, reintroducing the English subject to elementary school students. The Merdeka Curriculum is an educational reform introduced by Indonesia's Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) in 2022. This curriculum marks a transition toward a more adaptable, learner-focused, and skills-oriented approach to teaching and learning. SDN 1 Jeringo, as one of the Sekolah Penggerak, has started reintroducing English through the Merdeka Curriculum in grades 3 and 5, although students still struggle due to insufficient resources and prior exposure. A pre-experimental research design with a one-group pretest-posttest model was conducted involving 26 students. Vocabulary tests created using the Wordwall platform were administered before and after the intervention. The activities included matching games and picture-word association tasks, conducted in three sessions over three days. The average vocabulary score increased significantly from 60.77 (pretest) to 83.46 (posttest), with a practical gain of 22.69 points. The normality of the data was confirmed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. A paired sample t-test, performed in SPSS 26, showed a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that Wordwall is an effective, engaging, and accessible tool for vocabulary learning in primary education, especially in the context of the Merdeka Curriculum.
