Abstract

This quasi-experimental research examined the impact of the Quizlet application on students’ English vocabulary mastery at SMPN 3 Praya Tengah, a rural junior high school located in Central Lombok, Indonesia. The study was conducted in response to students’ limited vocabulary knowledge and the insufficient use of interactive digital learning tools. Thirty seventh-grade students participated and were assigned to experimental and control groups. A 30-item vocabulary test focusing on the topic “Personality and Skills” was administered as both pre-test and post-test. The experimental group underwent five instructional sessions utilizing Quizlet’s interactive modes Flashcards, Learn, Match, and Test while the control group received conventional instruction. The test instrument was validated by expert reviewers, and its reliability coefficient, measured through Cronbach’s Alpha, was 0.87, indicating high internal consistency. Data were processed using SPSS 26, including tests of normality, homogeneity, and an independent samples t-test. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the two groups (t(28) = 3.57, p = 0.002, d = 0.80), resulting in the rejection of the null hypothesis (H?) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H?). These findings demonstrate that Quizlet effectively enhances students’ vocabulary mastery, learning motivation, and autonomy. The results also align with retrieval practice and gamification theories, confirming that Quizlet can serve as an effective digital medium for improving vocabulary acquisition, especially in rural educational settings with limited access to technology This suggests Quizlet can be integrated into junior high school curricula to promote autonomous vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the use of idiomatic expressions in George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, focusing specifically on Chapters 1 and 2, by identifying and classifying idioms based on Chitra Fernando’s (1996) theory of idiomaticity. The research aims to determine the types and frequency of pure idioms and semi-literal idioms used in the narrative, and to explore their contextual meanings and narrative functions. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the researcher extracted idioms through manual reading and digital tools, then categorized and analyzed them qualitatively. The findings reveal a total of 44 idiomatic expressions, with semi-literal idioms comprising the majority (79.55%) and pure idioms accounting for 20.45%. The dominance of semi-literal idioms suggests a stylistic preference in Martin’s writing for expressions that balance figurative richness with interpretative accessibility. This study affirms the applicability of Fernando’s theory to literary texts, particularly in the fantasy genre, where idioms play a key role in world-building, character development, and thematic resonance. The results contribute to a broader understanding of idiomatic usage in literature and offer practical insights for learners, educators, and future researchers interested in figurative language analysis.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is an important component in English learning because it supports students' ability to understand and use language effectively. However, many students still struggle to master vocabulary, especially adjectives. Using technology-based learning media, such as the Memrise application, can be an alternative for improving students' vocabulary mastery. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of using the Memrise flashcard application on students' mastery of adjective vocabulary. This study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design in the form of a one-group pre-test and post-test. The subjects were 35 students of grade XI SAINS 1 at SMA Negeri 2 Mataram in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-samples t-tests in SPSS. The results showed that the students' average score increased from 80.03 in the pre-test to 92.66 in the post-test. The t-test results showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant increase in students' mastery of adjective vocabulary after using the Memrise application. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Memrise flashcard application is effective at improving students' mastery of English adjective vocabulary.

Abstract

English vocabulary mastery has undergone significant changes with the emergence of digital technology. This study aims to examine the use of digital tools in English vocabulary learning by students in the English Language Education Study Program at the University of Mataram, focusing on the utilization of various digital tools. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected through online questionnaires completed by 52 participants and in-depth interviews with 10 purposively selected participants. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on the Braun and Clarke (2006) model. The results show that students use various digital tools in an integrated manner, combining social media, learning applications, digital dictionaries, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the vocabulary learning process. This process occurs continuously through the stages of discovering new words, understanding their meanings, and using them in sentences or conversations. Furthermore, the effectiveness of digital materials is evident in the multimodal support provided, such as visual and auditory aids to support understanding of meaning and pronunciation. The study also identified barriers to the use of digital tools, including distractions from non-educational content and technical issues related to internet connection. These findings indicate that the functional effectiveness of digital learning tools is directly related to students' strategies and their independent learning abilities. Theoretical and practical implications for the development of technology-based vocabulary learning are also discussed.
