Abstract

This study aims to examine the types and frequency of students’ errors in using countable and uncountable nouns in descriptive text writing. The research was conducted at SMK IT Insan Kreatif Tanjung Morawa, focusing on first-grade students. The objectives of the study are: (1) to identify the types of grammatical errors made by students in applying countable and uncountable nouns, and (2) to determine the most dominant type of error. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, and the participants consisted of 28 students from class X-A. The data were obtained from students’ written descriptive texts, which were then analyzed based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). The analysis revealed that four main types of errors occurred: omission (41.46%), misordering (24.39%), addition (21.95%), and misformation (12.19%). Among these, omission errors were the most dominant. These errors occurred due to several factors, including a lack of understanding of noun classification rules, limited vocabulary, and insufficient exposure to correct usage in context. Additionally, many students confused uncountable nouns with plural countable nouns, resulting in inappropriate use of determiners and verb forms. The findings of this study suggest that English teachers need to emphasize targeted instruction on countable and uncountable nouns, integrate corrective feedback, and provide contextualized practice to help students internalize correct grammatical structures. This research also contributes to the broader field of English language teaching by offering insights into common learner difficulties in grammar, which can be addressed through enhanced pedagogical strategies

Abstract

Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan soft skill siswa-siswi kelas 12 SMA Negeri 1 Sibolangit. Pelatihan kepemimpinan ini penting untuk terapkan pada siswa-siswi karena hasilnya dibutuhkan di dunia kerja dan di jenjang universitas. Metode penerapan pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan metode diskusi dan role-play. Hasil pelatihan ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa-siswi lebih dekat dengan tradisi lokal yang mengandung nilai-nilai kearifan lokal berupa tanggung jawa, saling menghargai, cakap berkomunikasi, sopan, berkomitmen, taat aturan atau disiplin, pekerja keras, jujur, percaya diri, bersyukur, dan memiliki harapan kepada sang pencipta. Pelatihan ini juga menjadi insfirasi bagi guru dalam memilih dan menentukan metode yang tepat menyajikan materi sehingga disenangi oleh siswa-siswi. Novelty pelatihan ini terletak pada integrasi nilai-nilai tradisi budaya lokal dalam proses pengembangan kepemimpinan dan soft skill siswa. Pendekatan ini sangat relevan karena siswa-siswi belajar dari pengalaman yang dihormati oleh masyarakat lokal. Di samping itu, pelatihan ini merupakan sebuah inovasi dalam memperkuat identitas dan meningkatkan rasa cinta budaya. Pelatihan sejenis belum pernah dilakukan dengan pendekatan kearifan lokal di tingkat SMA khususnya di SMA Negeri 1 Sibolangit.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat merupakan salah satu bentuk pelaksanaan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang bertujuan memberikan kontribusi nyata bagi masyarakat melalui penerapan ilmu pengetahuan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di HKBP Ressort Mandala I dengan fokus pada peningkatan motivasi belajar anak Sekolah Minggu melalui program “Sabtu ceria”. Permasalahan yang melatarbelakangi kegiatan ini adalah masih rendahnya motivasi belajar anak serta kurangnya variasi metode pembelajaran yang menarik dalam kegiatan pembinaan anak di gereja. Oleh karena itu, program Sabtu ceria dirancang sebagai kegiatan pembelajaran yang menyenangkan, edukatif, dan partisipatif. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah pendekatan partisipatif dan edukatif yang melibatkan anak-anak secara aktif dalam berbagai aktivitas pembelajaran. Kegiatan dilaksanakan melalui beberapa tahapan, yaitu tahap persiapan, tahap pelaksanaan, dan tahap evaluasi. Bentuk kegiatan yang dilakukan meliputi sesi pembelajaran matematika, bahasa Indonesia, pendidikan agama, pengenalan kosakata bahasa Inggris, serta permainan edukatif yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan keterlibatan dan minat belajar anak. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa program Sabtu ceria mampu meningkatkan motivasi belajar anak Sekolah Minggu. Hal ini terlihat dari meningkatnya antusiasme anak dalam mengikuti kegiatan, keberanian untuk berpartisipasi dalam diskusi, serta ketekunan dalam menyelesaikan tugas yang diberikan. Selain itu, suasana belajar yang menyenangkan melalui permainan dan kegiatan kreatif membuat anak memandang belajar sebagai aktivitas yang menarik dan bermakna. Dengan demikian, kegiatan Sabtu Ceria dapat menjadi alternatif program pembelajaran yang efektif dalam meningkatkan motivasi belajar anak di lingkungan gereja.

Abstract

ABSTRAK: Penelitian prototipe word order Bahasa Batak Toba (BBT) ini memiliki tujuan untuk menggambarkan karakteristik tata urut kata dan sistem pivot BBT dan menginterpretasikan tipologi BBT berdasarkan karakteristik sintaksis klausanya. Dalam pelaksanaannya data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode agih dengan teknik ganti dan ubah-ujud. Pengujian pivot dilakukan terhadap konstruksi klausa koordinatif dan subordinative. Hasil uji pivot menunjukkan bahawa pola urutan kata VOS merupakan prototipe yang lazim dalam BBT. Penganalisisan data secara tipologis menunjukkan simpulan dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa BBT digolongkan kepada kelompok bahasa akusatif secara sintaksis. Hal tersebut tercermin lewat S yang diperlakukan sama dengan A, dan ada perlakuan berbeda untuk P. selanjutnya pengujian pivot memperlihatkan bahwa FN pada BBT dapat dilesapkan secara langsung apabila FN tersebut berada dalam fungsi S atau A. sebaliknya jika FN ada pada fungsi P maka hal pelesapan tidak bisa dilakukan secara langsung. Pelesapan dapat dilakukan dengan cara pemasifan atau pentopikalisasian salah satu klausa terlebih dahulu. Dari hasil pola yang dihasilkan diatas maka dapat dismpulkan bahwa BBT adalah bahasa dengan tipologi akusatif dengan merujuk pada sistem pivot S/A.

Abstract

This study was aimed to observe the use of Shadowing technique to improve students’ ability in listening comprehension. This research was conducted by using classroom action research which is consist of two cycles. The sample of the research was one group out of four groups of the first semester students’ of English Department of Nommensen KHBP university which was selected by using random sampling technique. Listening test, observation sheets and diary notes were employed to collect the data. Quantitatively, it showed that there were an improvement of listening ability from the students since the first up to the last treatments. The result showed that in the first treatment there is no students who got the point up to 75. But it increased to 37.5% in the end of the second treatment and 94.28% in the end of the last treatment. Qualitatively, the result showed that the students felt better, easier, and interesting to learn listening that leading to the acquirement of more successful listening comprehension skill. Therefore, shadowing technique could be used to improve students’ ability in listening comprehension. Keywords: Listening comprehension, shadowing technique

Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties in listening comprehension faced by third-semester students in the Extensive Listening course at the English Department of HKBP Nommensen University Medan. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design to explore the types of listening difficulties experienced by students and the factors contributing to those difficulties. The participants consisted of third-semester students enrolled in the Extensive Listening course during the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire involved 30 students, while in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 selected participants using purposive sampling.The findings reveal that students experience various listening difficulties, including limited vocabulary, unfamiliar grammatical structures, pronunciation differences, unfamiliar accents, fast speech rate, and reduced forms in connected speech. Among these factors, fast speech rate and unfamiliar vocabulary were identified as the most dominant difficulties affecting students’ listening comprehension. Observation and interview results further indicate that long listening passages and technical issues related to audio quality also contribute to students’ comprehension problems. Overall, the study concludes that students’ listening difficulties are influenced by both linguistic and technical factors, with linguistic factors playing a more significant role. These findings suggest the need for improved listening materials, varied exposure to accents, and appropriate speech rates to enhance students’ listening comprehension skills.

Abstract

This study analyzes the realization of interpersonal function in the tenth grade English textbook Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress used in Senior High School under the Merdeka Curriculum. The objectives are to identify how interpersonal function is realized through mood types and to determine the dominant mood type in the textbook. The study applies Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the interpersonal metafunction and the Mood system, which includes declarative, interrogative, and imperative clauses. A descriptive qualitative design with document analysis was employed. The data were clauses taken from reading texts. A total of 180 clauses were analyzed by identifying mood elements such as Subject, Finite, Predicator, Complement, and Adjunct, and then classified into mood types. The findings show that all three mood types are realized in the textbook, with declarative mood as the most dominant, functioning to present information and explanation. Interrogative mood is used to guide students’ comprehension and encourage interaction, while imperative mood functions to give instructions and direct learning activities. The dominance of declarative mood indicates that the textbook positions the writer as an information provider and students as receivers of knowledge, although the presence of interrogative and imperative clauses still promotes participation. Overall, the textbook supports communicative learning and contributes to the development of students’ communicicative competence through its linguistic choices.

Abstract

The digitalization of reporting systems is essential for ensuring transparency in rural governance; however, data validity remains a persistent challenge in manual reporting practices. This community service program aimed to transform the Babinsa reporting system in Bandar Dolok Village from conventional documentation into a forensic discourse–based digital reporting system. The program employed a Community-Based Action Research (CBAR) approach over three months, resulting in the implementation of the Bandar Dolok Smart-Monitoring application equipped with metadata encryption, geotagging, and automated timestamps. The implementation significantly improved data integrity, with spatial accuracy increasing by 95% and narrative objectivity improving by 91%. Reporting practices shifted from subjective descriptions to verifiable digital evidence with audit value. Beyond accelerating information flow, the system enhances transparency and accountability in village development monitoring. The program concludes that forensic-based digitalization can establish a transparent, accountable, and tamper-resistant development monitoring system.

Abstract

Memasuki era globalisasi dan informasi, bangsa Indonesia dituntut mampu bersaing dengan bangsa-bangsa lain dalam berbagai bidang kehidupan. Dalam era tersebut, penguasaan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi menjadi suatu keharusan karena dapat menentukan kemampuan suatu bangsa untuk menang dalam persaingan. Keterkaitan global antar bangsa pada masa itu, juga menempatkan bahasa asing pada posisi yang sangat strategis. Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu bahasa internasional yang paling umum digunakan dan sangat popular, maka dapat disebut sebagai media komunikasi global. Bahasa ini telah menjadi bahasa internasional secara alamiah seiring dengan kemajuan negara-negara Eropa dan Amerika Serikat.

Abstract

The teachers’ speaking performance pattern at Prime One School is a manifestation of the legitimacy of teachers’ speaking performance at the international school. The applied teaching performance patterns reflect international-standard teaching performance. The teacher’s speaking performance patterns are the embodiment of an activity related to the participants’ backgrounds. Good performance has a positive impact on learning. Performance is related to participants’ speech and indexicality. The speech describes the background and produces accompanying meanings. The differences in how they understand something.  This study aims to determine teacher performance in teaching at Prime One School. This study uses an anthropological approach because teacher performance patterns are related to participants and indexicality. This study uses a qualitative paradigm with an interactive model. The research data are teachers’ utterances. The data collection methods: direct pastoral observations and open and in-depth interviews. The interactive model is a data analysis method that consists of three stages: data condensation, data display, and verification/conclusion. This effectiveness is demonstrated by using structured language and appropriate intonation, which can attract students’ attention and increase their interest during the learning process. Teachers are also able to actively manage communication through questions and explanations, which can motivate students to be more involved in learning activities. This good speaking performance contributes positively to the achievement of learning objectives and creates a conducive learning environment. This research will contribute to teachers' understanding of their performance patterns during teaching.
