Abstract

Groupers are among the fish groups that are difficult to recognize due to their high morphological similarities. Therefore, molecular techniques, particularly DNA barcoding, are extensively utilized to differentiate this fish group. This study aimed to analyze and validate six grouper species belonging to the Epinephelidae family that were harvested from Langsa district waters in Aceh province, Indonesia, based on DNA barcode data. It was conducted from June to December 2021, with the fish specimens collected from fishers at fish landing sites and the fish market in Langsa City, Aceh province. A total of 22 grouper sequences belonging to six species were generated, namely Epinephelus coioides, E. bleekeri, E. malabaricus, E. erythrurus, E. sexfasciatus and Mycteroperca poecilonotus (formerly Epinephelus poecilonotus). Genetic distance within these species ranged from 0.10 to 0.73% (average: 0.40%). Notably, E. malabaricus and E. coioides exhibited the closest genetic kinship (4.07%), while E. sexfasciatus and M. poecilonotus displayed the greatest genetic distance (19.33%). This study provides the first DNA reference for grouper in Langsa district, Indonesia, with significant implications for future sustainable grouper management.

Abstract

The spot-tail shark, Carcharhinus sorrah is a species of requiem shark found primarily in warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This study aims to assess the length at first maturity and length distribution The spot-tail shark, C. sorrah collected from key fish landing sites in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Data collection occurred between March 2020 and October 2022 at three fishing ports: Banda Aceh (BA), Aceh Barat (AB), and Aceh Barat Daya (ABD). A One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed to analyze the total length (TL) of male and female fish from these sites. Results indicated an overall sex ratio of female to male fish at 1:1.67 ( = 45.19, p 0.001), with significant differences observed in sex ratios between BA and ABD ( = 6.72, p = 0.01; = 41.14, p 0.001), while AB showed no significant difference ( = 1.64, p = 0.20). Logistic regression analysis revealed variations in the length at which 50% of males and females reached maturity (Lm50): males from ABD, AB, and BA were 110.65 cm TL, 117.03 cm TL, and 152.65 cm TL, respectively, while females from BA, ABD, and AB were 107.30 cm TL, 113.94 cm TL, and 116.14 cm TL, respectively. Notably, males from ABD and females from BA matured earlier than those from other sites. In terms of length distribution, the average greatest with standard deviation (SD) length of male C. sorrah was 122.8737.87 cm TL in AB, followed by BA at 113.8013.10 cm TL and ABD at 107.8618.38 cm TL. This species is important for both ecological balance and fisheries, emphasizing the need for effective management and conservation efforts. Keywords:The spot-tail sharkCarcharhinus sorrahsex ratiolength at first maturitywesternmost Indonesia

Abstract

Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) merupakan salah satu komoditas utama akuakultur nnasional di Indonesia dengan potensi?ekonomi yang besar. Nonetheless, obstacles like poor water quality and inadequate feed practices prevent sustainable aquaculture. This study aims to design an automatic feeding system for the Internet of Things (IoT) equipped for real-time monitoring of water pH and temperature, powered by solar energy. The system consists of a pH sensor (PH-4502C), a temperature sensor (DS18B20), an ESP32 microcontroller and a Blynk application, which serves as the main interface for the system. The testing was done to prove that this whole system works fine with 2 nos of 100Wp monocrystalline solar panels with 12V 100Ah batter. The system successfully enhances farm operational efficiency, boosts energy sustainability, and offers a novel solution for vannamei shrimp farm management.

Abstract

The groupers are a group of demersal fish that live in tropical and subtropical areas and are mostly linked to coral reefs. The fish are highly valued in international markets and are subjected to overfishing in the wild. Accurate fish resource identification knowledge is essential for sustainable fisheries management. This research is aimed to generate a reference COI sequence library of grouper species caught in Simeulue and Banyak Islands, Aceh. The study was conducted from April-September 2021 at sixteen fish landing sites in Simeulue and Banyak Islands. In total, this study generated 70 COI sequences representing 20 grouper species. Epinephelus (54%) was the most prevalent grouper genus at the study site, followed by Cephalopholis (19%), Plectropomus (13%), Variola (12%), Hyporthodus (1%), and Anyperodon (1%). According to the IUCN classification, 17 species (85%) fall into the category of Least Concern, two (10%) fall into the category of Vulnerable, and one (5%) falls into the category of Data Deficient. The average genetic distance based on the Kimura-2-Parameter (K2P) between specimens was 0.51% at the species level and 8.34% at the genus level. Overall, this study has provided the COI sequence database of grouper for the Simeulue and Banyak Islands.

Abstract

The development of infrastructure could be one of a threat to habitat of horseshoe crabs. Regarding that, constructing of an international port at Kijing Beach in Mempawah could also become a menace to crabss habitat. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda is known to be the most commonly found in Mempawah Mangrove Park (MMP) coastal area. This study aim is to analyze population structure and morphometry of Carsinoscorpius rotundicauda in MMP coastal area. Research was conducted on April-September 2022.Fishers collected horseshoe crab samples using trammel net. This study observed 14 characters and four ratios of morphometric, i.e. total length (TL), prosoma length (PL), opisthosoma length (OL), telson length (TSL), prosoma width (PW), carapace length (CL), compound eyes distance (CED), anal angle length (AAL), posterior angle distance (PAD), telson width (TW), median ridge length (MRL), anterior occeli length (AOL), process marginal length (PML), body weight (BW), PL/OL, PW/PL, CL/TL, and CL/PW. The number of individuals of horseshoe crabs found high on September. The sex ratio of males to females was 1.95:1. The highest frequency relative of prosoma width was found in the range around 1214 cm (adult size). The ratio of PW/PL of female crab was significantly bigger than male. This difference could be used for determining sex of this species crabs. The growth pattern of mangrove horseshoe crabs bot males and females were negative allometry. Keywords:AllometricCoastalHorseshoe crabMangroveMorphometric

Abstract

Lingula anatina or also known as baree is an animal that has legs and no spine. Baree is one of the few marine avertebrates that has the most complete fossil record, this species can play a role in ecological monitoring and maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. This study aims to identify and analyze the types of ectoparasites and endoparasites as well as measure the prevalence and intensity of infection in Lingula anatina (baree) at Ujung Pancu Beach, Aceh Besar. The results showed the presence of ectoparasites Pedicellina cernua (Entoprocta) and Unitubilotestis sp. (Platyhelminthes), as well as endoparasites Perkinsus spp. (Perkinsozoa) and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Nematoda). The prevalence of ectoparasite infection ranged from 0.08%, with an intensity of 1 individual per sample, while the prevalence of endoparasites ranged from 0.03%-0.22% with an intensity of 1.45-2.81 individuals per sample. These findings add insight into the parasites infecting Lingula anatina and contribute to ecological monitoring and marine ecosystem health.Keywords:L. anatinaFilter feederNematodaPlatyhelminthes
