Abstract

Agroforestry emerged as a result of land conversion problems caused by population growth. Conversion of forest land into agricultural land will result in climate change. In anticipating climate change, it is necessary to provide outreach activities to the community regarding the integration of agroforestry systems in land use. Integration between forestry crops and agricultural crops is seen as an appropriate method for reducing food scarcity while also providing environmental benefits. Agroforestry is primarily expected to help optimize the results of a form of sustainable land use in order to guarantee and improve people's living needs, and can increase the carrying capacity of human ecology, especially in rural areas. The implementation of an on-farm research-based agroforestry system is carried out on community land. The aim of the community service program is to resolve problems faced by partners by conducting outreach and training regarding the implementation of agroforestry systems to anticipate climate change. The expected impact of this program is that the community will have understanding and expertise in mitigating climate change through the integration of agroforestry systems. The method of implementing the service program is socialization, discussion and training with the community. The expected target of community service is increasing understanding of climate change mitigation through the implementation of agroforestry systems.

Abstract

Tobimeita Village in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi, has abundant sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) resources that remain underutilized. One of the main challenges in processing sugar palm fruit into kolang kaling is the manual peeling method, which is time-consuming and poses a high risk of injury. This community service program aimed to empower local residents through the introduction of a simple, context-based technology called Kupclang—a mechanical peeler designed to improve safety and efficiency. The activities included socialization, hands-on training, product demonstration, and business mentoring. Results showed that Kupclang reduced peeling time from 90 seconds to just 6 seconds per fruit, achieving a work efficiency increase of 93.33%. The innovation also improved product quality and encouraged active participation, especially among women. This initiative contributed to enhancing local value-added production and opened new opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurship. The program recommends replicating Kupclang in other areas with similar agro-resource potential.

Abstract

Social forestry is one of the strategies for empowering communities around forests that aims to reduce deforestation and poverty by fostering community internalization in state forest management. The increasing number of permits poses a challenge for the government in assessing the institutional readiness of farmer groups after the permit. This fact serves as the background for the need to carry out community service by KTH Harapan Rakyat in Kongga Mea Village, focusing on institutional strengthening. The purpose of this service activity is to encourage greater knowledge and understanding of the roles of institutions and group governance, as well as their relation to forest conservation and economic improvement opportunities through the use of HKm areas. The service method uses a participatory approach through the delivery of materials, interactive discussions, questions and answers sessions, and reflection, involving 12 participants representing groups (administrators and members), forestry extension workers, and the village government. From the activities carried out, the participants showed an increase in the knowledge and understanding of the importance of a clear organizational structure, a transparent division of management duties, and the need to formulate a productive business development plan, both in the short and long term. Increasing participants' understanding of responsible and fair collective activities. This service activity is an important means of strengthening KTH's institutional capacity. Follow-up technical assistance is recommended to strengthen the farmer groups' capacity for sustainable forest management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze land cover changes in the protected forest area of Moramo Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency, using Landsat satellite imagery from 2003, 2014, and 2023 through supervised classification methods and spatial analysis with ArcGIS 10.8. The Moramo protected forest plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance; however, community activities that convert forest land into agricultural land have triggered significant land cover changes. The results identified five main land cover classes: primary dryland forest, secondary dryland forest, mixed dryland agriculture, shrubland, and bare land. Between 2003–2014, the largest decrease occurred in primary dryland forest, with a loss of 556.27 ha, while mixed dryland agriculture increased by 437.31 ha. During 2014–2023, primary dryland forest decreased by 244.87 ha, while mixed dryland agriculture expanded by 197.26 ha. Classification accuracy testing showed an overall accuracy of 84% and a kappa accuracy of 82.61%, indicating a reliable level of classification performance. The study concludes that land cover change in Moramo protected forest is mainly driven by the conversion of primary and secondary dryland forests into agricultural land. This condition potentially reduces the ecological functions of the forest, increases the risk of erosion and flooding, and decreases environmental quality. Therefore, regular monitoring and the implementation of social forestry programs are needed to preserve the forest while providing legal benefits to surrounding communities Keywords: land cover, protected forest, Landsat imagery, spatial analysis, Moramo.
