Abstract

Textbooks play a crucial role in shaping children's perceptions of gender from an early age. As primary sources of learning, visual representations within textbooks can either reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes. This study investigates the portrayal of gender in Indonesian language textbooks used in the Merdeka Curriculum for primary schools. Using a qualitative visual content analysis based on the Brugeilles and Cromer framework, this study examines two government-published Indonesian language textbooks for Grades III and IV. The analysis focuses on three key aspects: the frequency of male and female characters, their occupations, and depicted activities. Visual data were categorized and quantified to assess patterns of gender representation. Findings reveal persistent gender imbalances in both textbooks. Male characters are more frequently depicted, especially in group settings and public spaces. Male characters also hold more diverse and prestigious occupations, while female characters are more often associated with domestic roles and emotional expression. Although the Grade IV textbook shows slightly improved balance in occupational representation, gender stereotypes remain evident in activity types and settings. These patterns suggest that gender bias continues to be embedded in educational materials, despite the progressive aims of the Merdeka Curriculum. The findings call for greater attention to gender-sensitive illustration practices and the development of inclusive learning resources. Teachers are encouraged to critically engage with textbook content and promote discussions on gender equality in the classroom.

Abstract

Traditional teaching methods in science education often struggle to effectively convey abstract concepts such as the Solar System, leading to low student engagement and limited conceptual understanding. Integrating interactive learning media, particularly edutainment games, offers a promising solution to enhance both interest and comprehension in elementary science learning. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design to evaluate the effectiveness of edutainment game-based learning media. Participants included two groups of sixth-grade students: an experimental group taught using edutainment games and a control group taught using conventional methods. Pretest and post-test assessments were administered to measure conceptual understanding, while a Likert-scale questionnaire evaluated students' learning interest. Data were analyzed using Paired Sample T-Tests to determine the significance of differences between pre- and post-intervention scores. Findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in both learning interest and conceptual understanding among students in the experimental group compared to the control group (p 0.001). Students exposed to edutainment game-based learning demonstrated higher engagement levels and deeper comprehension of the Solar System topic. The use of game-based interactive media not only fostered active learning but also addressed challenges associated with teaching abstract scientific content. These results support the integration of edutainment games into elementary science curricula as a means to enhance learning outcomes and student motivation.

Abstract

Basic calculation skills—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—are foundational in elementary mathematics. However, many students struggle to master these skills using traditional instruction alone. This study explores the effectiveness of integrating the demonstration method with digital learning media to improve calculation skills among Grade IV elementary students. A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was employed with 40 fourth-grade students from Mendak State Elementary School, Indonesia. The intervention combined step-by-step teacher-led demonstrations with digital tools, such as interactive apps, over an eight-week period (16 sessions). Students’ calculation abilities were measured before and after the intervention using a validated 20-item multiple-choice test. Data were analyzed using paired samples t-tests after confirming normality through the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Students showed significant improvement in posttest scores (M = 85.56) compared to pretest scores (M = 60.62), with a mean gain of 24.95 points (t = 15.43, p 0.001). Most students shifted from “fair” or “low” to “high” or “very high” proficiency categories. Female and older students exhibited slightly higher gains, though improvements were consistent across all demographics. The integration of structured demonstration with digital media significantly enhanced students’ arithmetic performance. The blended approach leveraged the clarity of modeling with the engagement and personalization of digital tools. Despite the study’s limitations—such as the absence of a control group—findings support the use of blended instructional methods in elementary mathematics.

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as a challenging and abstract subject, leading to low student engagement and understanding. To address this, innovative instructional strategies are needed. This study investigates the effectiveness of the mathematics menu and role-play method in enhancing fourth-grade students’ interest and conceptual understanding of number concepts. A quasi-experimental design was used, involving two groups: an experimental group taught using the mathematics menu and role-play method, and a control group taught using conventional methods. Participants were not randomly assigned. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to both groups to measure outcomes in the affective (interest) and cognitive (understanding) domains. Multiple-choice assessments served as the primary data collection tools. Data analysis showed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in both interest and understanding compared to the control group. The post-test scores of the experimental group were consistently higher across both domains, indicating the positive impact of the intervention. The findings suggest that incorporating the mathematics menu and role-play into instruction effectively fosters student motivation and engagement (affective domain), while also promoting deeper conceptual understanding (cognitive domain). The interactive nature of role-play activities and contextualized learning through the menu approach allowed students to connect abstract concepts to real-life scenarios, making learning more meaningful and enjoyable. This study supports the use of role-play and mathematics menus as effective, student-centered teaching strategies for elementary mathematics, particularly for improving interest and comprehension in number concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the integration of dialogic learning and immersive learning within a Project Based Learning (PjBL) framework, using illustrated Jataka stories from the Borobudur Temple reliefs, can improve creativity, literacy skills, and understanding of moral values of elementary school students. The background of this study lies in the low level of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) among Indonesian students and the need for a contextual and adaptive learning approach to the challenges of the 21st century. Jataka reliefs were chosen as a learning resource rich in moral values and narrative visuals, so that they are relevant to the characteristics of students at the concrete operational stage. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design involving Phase B students at Kanisius Wanurejo Borobudur Elementary School. Data collection techniques included participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and student reflection journals. Data analysis followed the Miles & Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the integration of dialogic learning, immersive learning, and PjBL provides students with opportunities to think critically, express ideas, collaborate, and develop deeper moral understanding. The use of illustrated stories has been shown to be effective in enhancing imagination, improving literacy skills, and connecting concepts to real-life experiences. These findings confirm that local culture-based learning through the Jataka narrative project is an innovative and effective approach to fostering creativity, literacy, and character development in elementary school students.
