Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is a cornerstone of language proficiency, yet many university students face difficulties in managing their learning autonomously. Self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies offer potential for greater independence, but their actual implementation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts remains underexplored. This study examines the lived experiences of EFL students in applying SRL strategies for vocabulary learning, focusing on how they adapt these strategies to their individual goals, contexts, and challenges. A qualitative phenomenological design was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with 14 second-semester English Study Program students at Universitas Riau. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis, guided by Zimmerman’s SRL model. Three themes emerged. First, students flexibly applied SRL strategies by adapting Zimmerman’s framework to personal goals, moods, and contexts, though systematic goal-setting was often absent. Second, digital tools such as Duolingo, TikTok, and YouTube shaped personalized learning ecosystems that blended formal study with informal media, underscoring both creativity and the need for digital self-regulation. Third, students reported difficulties in sustaining consistent SRL due to challenges in time management, emotional regulation, and transforming receptive into productive vocabulary. The study highlights how EFL learners adapt SRL in dynamic and non-linear ways, extending Zimmerman’s model to digital and affective dimensions of vocabulary learning. Pedagogically, findings underscore the need for structured support to help students bridge the gap between strategic awareness and consistent application, while offering directions for future research on fostering resilient autonomous learning habits.

Abstract

Duolingo has been a popular application for language learning nowadays. Using survey design, this study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the Duolingo app for improving English skills at a university in Indonesia. Over half the students surveyed actively use Duolingo. The findings reveals that 51 of the users poses positive attitudes towards the app. Students found that the app was most useful for enhancing listening and speaking skills, including pronunciation and fluency, due to Duolingo's interactive listening exercises and speech recognition features. Gamification elements like points and badges also made learning more enjoyable and maintained student motivation. These audio-focused, gamified, interactive features are what enabled Duolingo to build university students' oral/aural English skills and communicative competence. Additionally, students appreciated Duolingo’s ability to facilitate mobile learning and simple, self-paced studying.. In summary, findings indicate Duolingo's audio-focused, gamified, interactive features have potential for building university students' oral/aural English skills and communicative competence.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum changes the curriculum structure in schools, starting with driving schools as pioneers who adopt and implement P5. The principal selection process for drive schools involves several stages, highlighting the crucial principals' role in implementing P5. Not all schools will be ready to implement this curriculum, especially non-driving schools. This research aims to describe school principal policies, strategies, influence, and supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing P5 and uses a qualitative approach. Data are obtained through observation, interviews with school principals, teachers, students, and documentation. The research results show that school principals’ policies consist of planning, implementation, and evaluation. Planning involves forming a curriculum acceleration team, preparing KOSP, budgeting, and increasing teacher competency. Implementation involves forming a facilitator team, creating P5 modules, and mentoring. The evaluation highlights the improvements in school readiness, teacher assessment, and P5's orientation towards strengthening character rather than products. The P5 strategy includes understanding, preparing the ecosystem, design, management, processing assessment reports, evaluation, and follow-up. Influential aspects at SDN 032 include competent human resources and strategic location, as supporting factors for P5, while the obstacle is the teacher's slow adaptation to curriculum changes. The research results are expected to contribute to improving the P5 implementation in schools.

Abstract

This study explored English teachers’ experiences in utilizing slide presentation tools to enhance English teaching at SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. Specifically, it examined how slides were employed to organize lessons, support comprehension, manage classroom activities, and motivate students. A qualitative case study was conducted with five purposively selected teachers, and data from semi-structured interviews were analyzed thematically to ensure depth and credibility. The findings highlight three interrelated dimensions: instructional, technological, and creative-motivational experiences. Instructionally, slides enabled teachers to align content with learning objectives, maintain lesson flow, and optimize classroom management. Technologically, teachers demonstrated strong familiarity with tools such as PowerPoint and Canva, showing confidence and adaptability when facing challenges such as technical disruptions. Creatively, the integration of visuals, animations, and multimedia features enhanced learner engagement while requiring careful balance between aesthetics and clarity. These insights suggest that slide tools function not merely as visual support but as integral pedagogical instruments that shape instructional delivery, foster comprehension, and sustain engagement. The study contributes to English education by underscoring the importance of digital competence and instructional innovation, offering implications for professional development programs in English Teaching contexts.
