Abstract

Abstract: This research analyses about the factors contributing to speakinganxiety among third-year students in the English Department at University Riau. It also explores strategies that can help reduce this anxiety and enhance students’ ability to communicate effectively in English. Speaking anxiety is a common challenge faced by learners of English as a foreign language, often stemming from fear of judgment, lack of confidence, and inadequate preparation. These factors not only hinder students’ participation in class but also impede their overall language acquisition process. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study collected data from 115 participants using the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (FLSA) questionnaire and semi- structured interviews. The findings revealed that over half of the participants (53.33%) reported experiencing “very anxious” levels of speaking anxiety, indicating the prevalence and severity of the issue. Students identified specific causes of their anxiety, including fear of making mistakes, being evaluated negatively by peers and instructors, and feelings of linguistic inadequacy. To address these challenges, the study identified several strategies that students found effective. Among these were thorough preparation before speaking tasks, consistent practice to build familiarity and fluency, and adopting a positive mindset to reduce fear and build self-assurance. These strategies were found to significantly alleviate anxiety and enable students to approach speaking activities with greater confidence and ease. Keywords: Speaking anxiety, English proficiency, mixed-method, students' confidence

Abstract

Abstract: English is an international language that is widely used in today's globalized world as a means of communication. In Indonesia, English is used in every formal education setting, from elementary school to university. However, it can be challenging for language learners to practice their English in a natural environment because most of students spend very little time in class and only sometimes practice their English. Therefore, it needs some efforts to help students communicate and use English in daily activities, and one of the alternative ways is called English Day Program. This study aims to find out the students’ perceptions of the English Day Program in improving students’ English skills. The quantitative data collected by the questionnaire and the qualitative data obtained from the interview were analysed employing the descriptive analysis technique. The sample of this research is the secondgrade students of SMA IT Al-Husna Pekanbaru. The results showed that students have a positive perception of the English Day Program in terms of improving their English skills because the overall percentage of agreement levels was higher than the disagreement levels, as well as considering the positive responses from the interview sessions were higher than the negative responses. Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the level of speaking anxiety experienced by a group of pre-service English teachers at a university in Indonesia and investigating the factors contributing to their speaking anxiety. Using cluster random sampling, this mixed-method research took 30 pre- service English teachers from the same class as the research participants. The data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaires were adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). The result of the questionnaire shows that the students’ speaking anxiety is overall in the mildly anxious level. It was identified that there were six students (20%) in the level of very anxious, seven students (23%) in the level of anxious, 14 students (47%) in the mildly anxious level, one student (3%) in the relaxed level, and two students (7%) in the very relaxed level. The interview data indicated that the anxiety was likely because of several inter-related factors: social, linguistic, and personal factors. The social factors include fear of making mistake, feeling under pressure dealing with people, afraid of negative evaluation by teachers, worrying of losing face; the linguistic factor relates to students’ lack of English ability (grammatical issues, proper pronunciation, and vocabulary). While from the personal factor deal with issues such as low motivation and and family problems.

Abstract

The teacher is the one who stands at the forefront of the success of the learning process at school. Professional teachers are those who have high performance in their field. High or low of teacher performance can be influenced by several factors, both those that come from within the teacher itself, as well as factors that come from outside themselves. This study aims to analyze the effect of school principal supervision on the performance of teachers in one high school (SMA) in Kampar Regency, Riau Indonesia. The study population was 35 senior high school teachers in Kampar Timur, Kampar Regency. Given the relatively small population, the sample was determined by the total sampling technique. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires for supervision variables, while documentation interviews were used for teacher performance variables. The results of the study show that although there is a positive influence between the supervision of school principals on the performance of teachers in SMAN 1 Kampar Timur Kampar Regency, the total number of influences is (R Square (r2) = 0.410 or accounted for 16.80%. This means that the influence of supervision variables on performance teachers only made of 16.80%, while the remaining 83.20% is determined by other factors

Abstract

This research examined university students’ ability in paraphrasing paragraphs. This descriptive quantitative research took students of the English Education Department of Universitas Riau as samples using cluster random sampling technique. The selected sample was a Class of the English Study Program, Universitas Riau, which consists of 34 students. The data were collected by administering an online test of paraphrasing paragraphs through Google Form.  The collected data were analyzed by three raters and the results were calculated and classified by using adaptation guide rubric from Brown (2004). Three aspects of paraphrasing were assessed and analyzed: contents of information, choice of words and writing convention. This study found that the ability of the Students of English Study Program in paraphrasing paragraphs was an unacceptable level, with total points; 11.21 for Content Information aspect, 9.52 for Choice of Words aspect, and 9.75 for Writing Conventions aspect. In order to answer the research question on how bad the ability is, the only clear answer is that all facts that are found within the research are only referring to the ‘crisis’ of paraphrasing ability shown by the university students themselves. This finding showed that the university students’ ability in paraphrasing paragraphs is low, due to the facts that; First, they get a low-level score in all aspects of paraphrasing. Second, they still make many fatal mistakes in every aspect of paraphrasing like; skipping important details in paraphrasing that may lead to misinformation, misusing the vocabulary and diction in creating the words in paraphrasing, and severe problems in the grammar, punctuation, and spelling (writing conventions). Moreover, choice of words seems to be the most difficult aspect for the students since it had the lowest score than other aspects in paraphrasing. This research suggests that English students should be exposed to more practices in their academic writing subject about paraphrasing skills.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has issued new rules to prepare pre-service teachers to be professional teachers in the future by asking them to attend additional education named Teachers Professional Education Program (locally known as Pendidikan Profesi Guru, henceforth PPG). This case study aimed to identify the obstacles experienced by pre-service English teachers in FKIP Universitas Riau during the PPG program and the Teaching Practicum (PPL) as a part of the PPG program. This qualitative research involved 10 alumni of the Subsidized PPG English Education Department. Focus Group Discussion was used to collect data from the participants. The data obtained were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s (1984) thematic analysis and referred to the three procedures introduced by Flick (2002) i.e., open coding, axial coding and selective coding with the help of the NVivo 12 software. The findings showed seven emerging obstacles faced by the pre service English teachers during PPG. There were one (1) obstacle found at the first-semester theory program in PPG, and six (6) obstacles found at the second-semester practicum program in PPG known as PPL, which can be used as an input for further PPG students to prepare themselves both physically and mentally when participating in PPG as well as that for the development of a better PPG system in the future used by the government.

Abstract

The ability to write and publish articles in scientific journals is part of the professional competence of the teacher. The problem is that many teachers have not mastered the skills of writing scientific papers. As a result, many teachers find it difficult to advance in rank, especially for promotion after IV/a. This paper describes a community service activity sponsored by Riau University lecturers which aims to help teachers improve their scientific writing skills. Community Service Activities were performed at a SMAIT (Islamic Integrated High School) in Pekanbaru, Riau. This paper further explains the concept of the workshop, the content of the workshop materials, and the effectiveness of the workshop. This workshop lasted for two months with three face-to-face training sessions. The rest was done online via the Google Classroom platform. The material content covers the basic principles of scientific writing, the steps for writing scientific journals, how to cite and make references, including how to automatically quote from reference manager applications such as Mendeley, and how to submit articles through the Online Journal System (OJS). Data from the survey conducted at the end of the community service activity showed that, in general, this activity was well and effectively carried out. The majority of participants (72.7%) stated that their motivation to write increased after attending the training. Their knowledge of writing scientific articles have improved after training. Their ability in writing scientific journals is also relatively better than before following this structured workshop.

Abstract

The pandemic of Covid-19 has massively switched education delivery in the world from face-to-face learning to online learning. This qualitative study aimed to investigate students’ voices of the implementation of online learning during the pandemic of Covid-19 in higher education context. There were eight students of English Study Program Universitas Riau involving in this study selected using the purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and documentation. The participants’ voices were thematically analysed in terms of their learning participation, accessibility, material and assignment delivery of the online learning. This study found that the students view online  learning as learning experiences that bring both benefits and challenges. Students perceive online learning is a good choice to prevent the spread of coronavirus and a good time to improve their digital skills, but they were not really enthusiastic about its implementation. There are four major obstacles they faced, such as internet access, monotonous teaching method, limited interaction, and ineffective material and assignment delivery. The findings imply that online learning delivery in Indonesia still needs more improvement for better performance in the future.
