Abstract

Neglected tropical diseases, including scabies and pediculosis, are diseases that are still a health problem in Indonesia. Islamic boarding schools are risky locations with a high prevalence of scabies and pediculosis because they have dense housing, lack of environmental sanitation and personal hygiene. This service activity aimed to increase knowledge about preventing and treating scabies and pediculosis in Pondok Pesantren X, South Sumatra. A total of 46 students with complaints of itching on the skin and head were present as participants in the activity which has been carried out in November 2023. The implementation of service consists of examination, counseling, as well as pretest and posttest. The scabies examination method was carried out clinically according to IACS 2020 criteria, while pediculosis examination was carried out with a serit combs. Counseling activities on the topic of clean and healthy living behavior was began and ended with the pretest and posttest. From the examination activities, it was found that 95% (44) students suffered scabies and 36% (17) students suffered pediculosis. Participants were quite enthusiastic in participating in counseling activities, as evidenced by the number of questions related to clean and healthy living behavior in daily activities at Islamic boarding schools. The counseling activity was quite successful, which can be seen from the increase in the correct value and significance (p < 0.05) of the pretest and posttest results.

Abstract

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin—the most potent anti-TB drugs. Prolonged treatment duration and complex drug regimens often lead to poor adherence, contributing to high MDR TB incidence and low treatment success rates, particularly in Indonesia. This study analyzed drug utilization patterns in 52 MDR TB patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, using total sampling based on medical records from October 2018 to December 2019. Data were analyzed descriptively with SPSS v25. The most common side effects reported were weakness, nausea, and vomiting (84.6%), followed by arthralgia, hyperuricemia, and hearing loss (42.3%). Severe side effects were more prevalent in the short-term regimen group (40.4%) compared to the long-term group (7.7%). Weakness, nausea, and vomiting were the most frequently observed side effects in MDR TB patients.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infection ranges from 2.5% to 62%, primarily affecting lower socioeconomic groups with poor sanitation. STH transmission can occur through fecal-oral routes, skin penetration of larvae, and mechanical vectors. This study examines STH egg contamination in flies at the Sukawinatan Landfill, Palembang, to understand their role in transmission and support vector control strategies. The research employs a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. Observations were conducted microscopically with sample processed using the sedimentation technique. From 59 samples prepared from 598 flies, 17 samples (28.8%) were confirmed positive for STH eggs. The total number and type of STH eggs found were 24 Trichuris trichiura eggs. In conclusion, STH egg contamination was detected on flies at the Sukawinatan Landfill in Palembang City.

Abstract

Vulvovaginal candidiasis, a common fungal infection that affects up to 75% of women at least once in their lifetime. With increasing resistance to azole antifungals, such as fluconazole, due to factors such as gene efflux pumps, alternative treatments are needed. Probiotics, specifically Lactobacillus species, have emerged as a promising option due to their ability to inhibit Candida albicans and modulate the host immune response. This study analyzed data from randomized controlled trials. We collected data from articles comparing probiotics with fluconazole therapy and fluconazole alone with or without placebo in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis published between 2009 and 2024. We obtained articles from scientific databases such as Scopus, Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Clinical Key, JSTOR and Google Scholar based on inclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed using Review Manager Version 5.4.1. The results showed that probiotics significantly reduced symptoms of vaginal discharge (OR value = 0.14 (0.07,0.29), 95% CI) and improved culture test results (OR value = 0.33 (0.17,0.63), 95% CI), indicating potential benefits in improving vaginal microbiota balance and preventing recurrent infections. However, probiotics did not significantly relieve other symptoms, such as itching (OR value = 0.67 (0.27,1.61), 95% CI), irritation (OR value = 0.56 (0.25,1.24), 95% CI), and dyspareunia (OR value = 0.91 (0.34,2.43), 95% CI). For individuals with vulvar candidiasis who are unresponsive to fluconazole therapy, probiotic drugs can be given as additional therapy

Abstract

Candidiasis, caused by Candida species, remains a significant global health concern, with oral and vulvovaginal forms prevalent among immunocompromised populations and women, respectively. Increasing antifungal resistance, particularly among non-albicans species, underscores the need for novel therapeutic options. This systematic literature review assesses the antifungal efficacy of Morinda citrifolia (noni fruit) against Candida albicans. Utilizing the PRISMA protocol, we analyzed studies from Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases published between 2014 and 2024. Seven in vitro studies were included, examining the inhibitory effects of M. citrifolia extracts on C. albicans. Findings indicate that M. citrifolia exhibits significant antifungal properties, attributed to its bioactive compounds such as scopoletin and flavonoids, which disrupt fungal cell membranes. The effectiveness of M. citrifolia is concentration-dependent, with higher concentrations yielding greater antifungal activity. Given the increasing resistance to conventional antifungals, in vitro studies suggest that M. citrifolia may be a promising alternative, warranting further in vivo and clinical investigations to substantiate its therapeutic potential.

Abstract

Oxidative stress is an imbalance in the quantity of reactive species and antioxidant activity that is often associated with inflammatory diseases. Inflammation is the main cause of morbidity in most of the world's population. Inflammation occurs when there is an invasion of foreign bodies and pathogenic agents such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses that cause activation of the immune system. The protective effect of the inflammatory process is actually very good under normal circumstances. However, in chronic inflammation, tissue damage becomes uncontrollable and can lead to various diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and neoplastic transformation. For inflammatory therapy, steroids and non-steroidal drugs (NSAIDs) are usually used, but the use of these drugs can have serious long-term effects. Therefore, the development of anti-inflammatory agents from natural sources such as certain plant species that are safe, efficacious, biocompatible and cost-effective is a rational strategy that can be used to treat inflammatory diseases. One of its species, Guazuma ulmifolia or Dutch teak plant, is widely used in traditional medicine because it contains bioactive compounds, especially proanthocyanidins and flavonoids which have anti-oxidant and anti- microbial properties. The leaves and flowers of Guazuma ulmifolia can be used in fever, gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease and diabetes. Guazuma ulmifolia can protect the gastric mucosa against the harmful effects of NSAIDs through anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant mechanisms. The extract of Dutch teak leaves (Guazuma ulmifolia) was also effective in reducing the expression of myeloperoxidase in the pulmonary tissue of Wistar white rats with pulmonary contusions .

Abstract

Indonesian people like to consume a number of raw vegetables, one of which is cabbage. Even though it has been washed clean, raw cabbage is still at risk of containing STH eggs and transmitting worms. This study aimed to determine STH egg contamination in raw cabbage, used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 30 cabbage samples were taken randomly from 10 sellers at the traditional market. Samples were analyzed using the sedimentation method and STH eggs were identified under a microscope. All cabbage vegetables in the market were placed on the table, which indicates fairly good hygiene practices. However, one in 30 samples (3.33%) was contaminated with Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. These findings highlight the importance of improving vegetables hygiene and public awareness regarding cooked consumption.
