Abstract

Pityriasis versicolor is a superficial fungal skin disease and a global health concern. Scavengers working under the scorching sun with behaviors such as not showering immediately after work, rarely changing work clothes, and using damp towels are at an increased risk of developing P. versicolor. This study aimed to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and the occurrence of P. versicolor among scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill. The research employed an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design and total sampling technique. Forty-eight scavengers who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included as study subjects. Personal hygiene data were collected through questionnaires, while data on P. versicolor were obtained from clinical symptoms and examinations using a Wood's lamp. The results showed that 22.9% of the scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill had P. versicolor. Fisher's Exact test revealed a significant relationship between personal hygiene and the occurrence of P. versicolor, with a p-value of 0.002 (p < 0.05) and a Prevalence Ratio (PR) of 5.200 (PR > 1.000). In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between personal hygiene and the occurrence of Pityriasis versicolor among scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill.

Abstract

Skabies merupakan penyakit kulit akibat infestasi Sarcoptes scabiei yang masih menjadi masalah kesehatan masyarakat. Deteksi dini yang akurat sangat penting untuk mencegah penularan dan komplikasi. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) merupakan metode diagnostik molekuler yang berpotensi tinggi mendeteksi tungau skabies. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian literatur sistematik untuk mengevaluasi berbagai metode PCR, diantaranya konvensional, real time (RT), nested, dan multiplex dalam mendeteksi tungau skabies. Literatur diperoleh dari Google Scholar, ClinicalKey, Scopus dan PubMed dengan kata kunci “PCR and Scabies”, dibatasi pada artikel berbahasa Indonesia dan Inggris tahun 2015–2025. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa RT-PCR dan Nested PCR memiliki sensitivitas dan spesifisitas paling tinggi, masing-masing mencapai hingga 95% dan >90%. Gen target yang digunakan bervariasi, antara lain gen mitokondria 16S, ITS2, dan cox1. Sampel umumnya berasal dari kulit lesi, dengan sebagian menggunakan swab kering. Kesimpulannya, RT-PCR dan Nested PCR merupakan metode PCR paling potensial untuk deteksi skabies secara akurat, bahkan dengan material tungau yang rendah. Metode PCR bermanfaat dalam konteks surveilans endemis dan memfasilitasi pengobatan secara dini untuk mencegah penyebaran lebih lanjut.,. Diperlukan penelitian berskala besar serta pengembangan primer dan protokol PCR yang tepat dan sederhana untuk meningkatkan efektivitas diagnosis skabies.

Abstract

Vector-borne diseases remain a major public health concern in tropical regions, with dengue fever continuing to be the predominant vector-borne disease in urban Indonesia. Public tourist areas with high human activity may provide favorable breeding sites, making sanitation workers’ roles crucial. This study aimed to identify mosquito breeding characteristics and larval presence in water-holding containers (WHCs) and to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of sanitation workers in a historic public open space in an urban setting. A descriptive cross-sectional study using a mixed-methods approach was conducted, combining quantitative entomological surveys with qualitative in-depth interviews. All accessible WHCs at the study site were inspected for larvae, which were collected and morphologically identified, and Aedes larval indices (ABJ/Angka Bebas Jentik, HI, CI) were calculated. Sanitation workers were selected purposively as qualitative informants, and KAP data were analyzed thematically. Seven WHCs were identified, of which two outdoor natural pools (28.57%) were positive for larvae, yielding 13 larvae, all identified as Culex spp., with no Aedes spp. detected. Consequently, Aedes-specific indices showed an ABJ of 100%, HI of 0%, and CI of 0%, indicating a low risk of dengue transmission according to WHO criteria (HI <4% and CI <3%). Sanitation workers demonstrated generally good knowledge, positive attitudes, and routine preventive practices, although understanding of the full 3M Plus concept varied. In conclusion, despite the presence of non-Aedes larvae in outdoor natural containers, the absence of Aedes breeding sites suggests effective dengue vector control supported by routine sanitation practices in the study area.
