Abstract

Pulmonary hypertension (PAH), seen in 20%-40% of chronic respiratory diseases, is linked to the severity of these conditions. Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection causing lung damage and impaired function, can contribute to this increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, complicating patient outcomes by worsening both conditions. This study used an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional approach, measuring independent and dependent variables simultaneously at a single point in time. It focused on analyzing the relationship between pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary tuberculosis in patients. The study found that most respondents were aged 51-70 years, with no significant link between age or gender and hypertension (P-values=0.091 and 0.655, respectively). Light smoking was significantly associated with hypertension (P-value=0.001), while nutritional status was not (P-value=0.332). Significant relationships were found between blood pressure (P-value=0.002) and spirometry results (P-value=0.000) with hypertension. Thus, blood pressure, smoking habits, and spirometry results were key factors influencing pulmonary hypertension in the 60 patients studied. There is a significant relationship between Pulmonary Hypertension and Tuberculosis patients at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar, January - June 2023.

Abstract

In cases of pneumothorax in the chest tube, the presence of air in the pleural cavity that lasts more than 5 to 7 days can be suspected as a persistent air leak (PAL), especially if an increased amount of air is obtained accompanied by the appearance of bubbles in the water seal drainage (WSD) system. This is the most common complication after surgery (8–26%), although it can be primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) (26%) or secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) (39%). One condition that often causes difficulties in PAL therapy is infection due to direct contact with the fistula. The presence of PAL is associated with higher morbidity and mortality, prolonged chest tube inserted, and longer hospitalization. Observations of air production in PAL are expected to occur spontaneously within 4 days, if the leak persists, pleurodesis is recommended. If it was possible, surgery is needed to close the leak. Bronchoscopy treatment is only recommended in special circumstances where surgery is contraindicated or the patient refuses the surgical procedure.

Abstract

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a normal flora in the respiratory tract that can mutate into pathogenic bacteria that cause Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) such as pneumonia. The high prevalence of pneumonia causes antibiotics to be the appropriate therapy to treat cases of infection by bacteria. However, the use of antibiotics that are not indicated can lead to other health problems, namely antibiotic resistance. One of the efforts that can be made to reduce the rate of antibiotic resistance is the utilization of natural-based antibiotics. One of the plants that has potential as a natural antibiotic is Tin fruit (Ficus carica L.) which is thought to be due to the presence of antibacterial compounds in it, namely tannins, phenols, and flavonoids. The specialty of Tin fruit is also mentioned in the Qur'an surah At-Tiin verse 1 which means "By (the fruit) Tin and (the fruit) Olive".  To determine the antibacterial activity of Tin fruit (Ficus carica L.) against Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. The research conducted was a true experimental post test study using the disc diffusion method (Kirby Bauer method) to see the effectiveness of Tin fruit extract (Ficus carica L.) in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. Tin fruit extract (Ficus carica L.) with a concentration of 50% is resistant to Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria with an inhibition diameter of 4.35 mm. While the 100% concentration is sensitive in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria with an inhibition diameter of 19.45 mm. Tin fruit extract (Ficus carica L.) has antibacterial activity in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.

Abstract

Smoking is a habit that has a negative impact on health, but now many children are starting to smoke from an early age. Elementary school children aged 6–12 years are in the process of forming basic knowledge, including an understanding of the dangers of smoking. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of students at SD NEGERI 9 RAPE-RAPE about the dangers of smoking. This descriptive study with a cross-sectional design involved 83 respondents selected using total sampling and a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was performed descriptively using frequency distribution and ANOVA tests. The results showed low knowledge about smoking (84.3%) and the dangers of smoking (57.8%), with significant differences between classes (p<0.05). These findings indicate the need to improve health education and integrate material on the dangers of smoking into elementary school learning.

Abstract

The rising prevalence of infections caused by Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae necessitates the search for alternative antibacterial agents. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel is a potential source of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of red dragon fruit peel extract against ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae. The bacteria were isolated and identified via culture on MacConkey agar, Gram staining, and biochemical tests. The peel was extracted using 96% ethanol via maceration. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar with extract concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% (v/v), with three replicates per concentration. Meropenem (10 µg) and DMSO served as positive and negative controls. The extract exhibited concentration-dependent antibacterial activity, with mean inhibition zone diameters increasing from 5,6 ± 0,3 mm at 20% to 6,1 ± 0,2 mm at 100%. The positive control produced a 30,2 ± 0,5 mm zone, while the negative control showed no inhibition. One-way ANOVA confirmed significant differences between groups (p-value < 0,05). Red dragon fruit peel extract demonstrated promising in vitro antibacterial activity against ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae, although its potency was considerably lower than meropenem.
