Abstract

Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) remains a common health problem among young adults and can disrupt academic productivity. Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke are thought to increase respiratory tract vulnerability through mucosal irritation and decreased respiratory defense function. This study aims to analyze the relationship between smoking and secondhand smoke exposure with ARI symptoms in students of the Public Health Science Study Program, class of 2024, Jambi University. The study used a quantitative cross-sectional design with 100 students selected using a simple random sampling method. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering respondent characteristics, smoking status, secondhand smoke exposure, and ARI symptoms in the past month. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed using the Chi-square test, Odds Ratio (OR), and 95% confidence intervals. The results showed that 42.0% of respondents experienced ARI symptoms, 12.0% were active smokers, and 54.0% were frequently exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking habits were significantly associated with ARI symptoms (p=0.031; OR=5.00; 95%CI=1.26-19.80). Exposure to secondhand smoke was also significantly associated with ARI symptoms (p=0.042; OR=2.94; 95%CI=1.28-6.79). Gender was not significantly associated with ARI symptoms (p=0.788). Strengthening smoke-free areas and promoting smoking cessation education should be prioritized on campus and in student housing environments.

Abstract

Smoking remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia, including among university students. Although public health students are knowledgeable about the dangers of smoking, smoking persists. Knowledge and attitudes are important factors that can influence smoking behavior. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes and smoking behavior among students in the Public Health Science Study Program at the University of Jambi. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The sample size was 100 respondents selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that most respondents had good knowledge and negative attitudes toward smoking. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between knowledge and smoking behavior (p < 0.05) and a significant relationship between attitudes and smoking behavior (p < 0.05). The conclusion of this study is that knowledge and attitudes are significantly related to student smoking behavior. Therefore, interventions in the form of more effective health education and promotion are needed to reduce smoking behavior among university students.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with anemia among pregnant women in the working area of Kapau Public Health Center, Agam Regency, Indonesia, in 2022. The study employed a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 126 third-trimester pregnant women were selected using simple random sampling from the population of pregnant women attending antenatal care services. Data were collected through structured questionnaires assessing knowledge, educational level, family income, and adherence to iron (Fe) tablet consumption, while anemia status was determined based on hemoglobin levels recorded in maternal health books. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The findings revealed significant associations between maternal knowledge and anemia incidence (p < 0.05), as well as between adherence to Fe tablet consumption and anemia incidence (p < 0.05). In contrast, educational level and family income were not significantly associated with anemia among pregnant women (p > 0.05). These results indicate that behavioral factors, particularly knowledge and compliance with iron supplementation, play a more important role in preventing anemia than sociodemographic factors. In conclusion, improving maternal knowledge and strengthening adherence to iron tablet consumption are essential strategies to reduce anemia among pregnant women. Health promotion and continuous monitoring by healthcare providers are recommended to improve maternal health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: The smoke-free zone policy is one of the government's efforts to create a healthy environment and protect the public from exposure to cigarette smoke, particularly in educational settings. Schools play a strategic role in preventing smoking among adolescents, as the number of new smokers continues to rise. However, the implementation of the smoke-free zone policy in schools is often suboptimal due to limited resources, lack of supervision, and the absence of clear operational guidelines. Purpose: To analyze the implementation of the smoke-free zone policy in educational settings. Method: This study used a qualitative descriptive design. This study was conducted at State Senior High School 5 in Jambi City, located at Simpang IV, Sipin Village, Telanaipura District, Jambi City, from March to April 2026. Informants included the principal, teachers, guidance counselors, students, security officers, and canteen vendors. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Results: Policy implementation has not been optimal. Communication regarding the smoking ban has been implemented through regulations and socialization, but coordination with external parties remains limited. The resources, facilities, and infrastructure supporting the policy remain inadequate. Although the entire school community generally supports the policy, violations are still found due to low awareness and weak oversight. Furthermore, there is no organizational structure or specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) for smoke-free areas. Conclusion: The implementation of the smoke-free area policy still requires improvement, particularly in terms of supervision, provision of supporting facilities, and enforcement to create a healthy and smoke-free school environment. Suggestion: Future research should involve a larger sample size and location, and use quantitative or mixed methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the smoke-free area policy and identify factors influencing its successful implementation.   Keywords: Education System; Policy Implementation; Smoke-Free Area.

Abstract

Background: Limited access to and quality of social security administering agency services in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions is a major challenge for low-income communities and has the potential to reduce patient satisfaction at community health centers. Geographical barriers, limited facilities, and a lack of health resources often impact the effectiveness of health services in remote areas. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between service accessibility and service quality, as well as patient satisfaction among participants of the social security administering agency in low-income communities in 3T regions. Method: This study used a quantitative observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 106 respondents were selected using a multistage and purposive sampling technique. This study was conducted at the Muara Kibul Community Health Center and the Aur Berduri Community Health Center in Merangin Regency since February 2025. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses, using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between variables. Results: Most respondents rated service affordability as good, particularly in economic, language, and social aspects, although geographic barriers remain a challenge. Service quality was rated as quite good in terms of reliability, but responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles still need improvement. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between service affordability and patient satisfaction (p = 0.000), as well as between service quality and patient satisfaction (p = 0.000). Respondents with poor service affordability and quality were at higher risk of experiencing dissatisfaction with healthcare services. Conclusion: Service affordability and quality are important factors influencing patient satisfaction among participants of the social security administration for health in the 3T regions. Improvements in health infrastructure, transportation access, responsiveness of healthcare workers, and supporting facilities are crucial to increasing patient satisfaction and strengthening healthcare services in remote areas. Suggestion: Further research is recommended to use a larger sample size and cover more health centers in the 3T region, so that the research results are more representative.   Keywords: Low-Income Communities; Patient Satisfaction; Service Affordability; Service Quality; Social Security Administration for Health.

Background: Occupational safety and health (OSH) is a crucial aspect in creating a safe work environment and preventing workplace accidents. One example of OSH implementation in a company is the implementation of safety socialization as a means of communicating occupational safety before work begins. The state electricity company procurement service unit in Kota Baru Jambi routinely conducts safety outreach as part of its efforts to increase worker awareness and discipline regarding occupational safety. Purpose: To determine the policy and implementation of safety socialization, as well as the challenges, obstacles, and successes of safety socialization implementation at state electricity company. Method: This qualitative research uses a case study approach to in-depth examine the implementation of safety socialization as an effort to prevent workplace accidents. This research was conducted at State Electricity Company procurement service unit in Kota Baru Jambi, Jelutung District, Jambi City, since November 2025. Seven informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation of informants involved in safety socialization. Results: Safety discussions have been routinely implemented and integrated into the company's operational activities. The implementation of safety discussions has contributed to increasing worker awareness regarding the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with work safety procedures. Challenges encountered include differences in worker understanding, time constraints, and lack of participation from some workers. Other obstacles include monotonous delivery methods and one-way communication. Nevertheless, the implementation of safety discussions has shown positive results, marked by improved work discipline and a minimum of fatal workplace accidents. Conclusion: The implementation of safety discussions has been quite successful and has contributed to improving worker compliance with OSH procedures and preventing workplace accidents, although challenges remain in the delivery method, worker participation, and evaluation of their implementation. Suggestion: Future research should use more diverse methods, expand research locations, and examine other factors and the use of digital media to increase the effectiveness of safety discussions in supporting an OSH culture.   Keywords: Occupational Accident Prevention; Occupational Safety and Health (OSH); Safety Discussions.
