Abstract

This study aims to explore the dynamics of the Monday night religious gathering that studies Al-Hikam by Ibn 'Atha'illah as-Sakandari through a phenomenological approach. The research focuses on three main aspects: (1) understanding Al-Hikam as a guide for life through the lens of intuitive spirituality, (2) the ritual structure of the gathering as a religious tradition, and (3) the spiritual magnetism that consistently draws participants. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and field study at Pondok Pesantren Kebon Sari, Kediri. The findings reveal that the gathering serves not only as a space for textual learning but also as a powerful medium for inner transformation. The internalization of Sufi values such as trust in God, sincerity, and patience combined with the charisma of the spiritual teacher and the solemn atmosphere of the gathering creates a profound spiritual experience. This gathering significantly contributes to inner peace, the strengthening of faith, and harmonious social relations, offering a transformative and contextually relevant model of spiritual education amidst the existential crises of modern society.

Abstract

Taxes, as the main source of state revenue, are often perceived by companies as a high corporate expense, prompting them to engage in tax avoidance practices. This study aims to examine the influence of board independence, board gender diversity, board size, audit quality, and CEO narcissism on tax avoidance, with firm age, leverage (DAR), and profitability (ROA) as control variables. In this study, tax avoidance is measured by the effective tax rate (ETR), with a lower ETR indicating a higher level of tax avoidance activity. The research obtains data from the financial statements and annual reports of processed food industry companies over three periods, from 2021 to 2023, which are published on the Indonesia Stock Exchange website or the official websites of the studied companies. This research employs a quantitative approach with secondary data. The sample consists of 48 observations over 3 research periods and 16 processed food industry companies in Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. The results of this study indicate that board independence, board size, audit quality, and CEO narcissism do not have an effect on tax avoidance, whereas board gender diversity has a negative effect on tax avoidance in the processed food industry. These findings highlight the importance for companies to consider the inclusion of women on the board of directors as a strategy to enhance corporate governance. The presence of women on the board reflects a higher ethical culture, more transparent practices, stronger compliance, and a tendency to reduce corporate tax avoidance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of harvested area, rice prices, rice consumption, and population on food security in East Java Province. The data used are secondary panel data from 38 districts/cities over the 2020–2024 period, analyzed using panel data regression with the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) approach. Model selection was determined through Chow and Hausman tests, where the Chow test favored FEM and the Hausman test indicated REM; however, FEM was retained for deeper interpretation due to its stronger within-group explanatory power. The estimation results show that harvested area (coef = 0.0000721; p < 0.01), rice prices (coef = 0.0009185; p < 0.01), and population (coef = 0.00001874; p < 0.01) have a positive and significant effect on food security, while rice consumption has no significant impact. The within R² value of 0.5272 indicates that the model can explain 52.72% of the variation in food security within regions. These findings emphasize the need for regionally adaptive agricultural policies and spatial food distribution improvements to enhance resilience and food system performance.
