Abstract

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as an abstract discipline, detached from everyday life. However, mathematical concepts can actually be found within local cultures, one example being in the costume of Tari Lahbako, a traditional dance from Jember that represents the life of tobacco workers. This study aims to explore elements of ethnomathematics in the Tari Lahbako costume using a descriptive approach with ethnographic methods. Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews at two dance studios: Sanggar Sweeta Collection and Sanggar Ninien Ariesitta. The results indicate that costume elements such as the hair bun, apron, skirt, and other accessories contain geometric shapes such as squares, circles, rhombuses, trapezoids, as well as concepts of reflection, parallel lines, and right angles. In addition, the presence of symmetrical patterns and regularity in the costume reveals an intuitive mathematical understanding by the designers. Therefore, the Tari Lahbako costume not only holds aesthetic and cultural value but also has great potential to be used as a medium for contextual mathematics learning. Through an ethnomathematical approach, students can understand mathematical concepts more concretely, meaningfully, and rooted in local wisdom

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as an abstract science detached from daily life, whereas in reality, it grows and develops within the culture of society. The ethnomathematics approach seeks to reveal how mathematical concept, especially geometry, manifest within cultural practices and architectural works. This study aims to explore the application of geometric concepts in the architecture of Saint Joseph Catholic Church Jember as an integration of mathematics, culture, and spirituality. The research employed a qualitative approach with an ethnographic case study design through participatory observation, interviews, and visual documentation. The result show that various elements of the church building, such as the bell tower, triangular roof, arched windows, pillars, stained glass, and floor mosaics, contain geometric concepts such as plane figures, solid figures, symmetry, similarity, and geometric transformations including reflection, rotation, and translation. Each architectural element demonstrates not only mathematical order but also symbolic meanings such as balance, perfection, and eternity that reflect Catholic faith values. The findings affirm that ethnomathematics serves as a bridge between science, art, and cultural values, making mathematics learning more contextual, meaningful, and grounded in real life.

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in mathematics instruction witha focus on students with visual impairments, a context that has not been sufficiently explored in higher education. Although UDL has been widely recognized as an inclusive approach, previous studies have primarily concentrated on general or primary–secondary education, leaving a gap in empirical evidence regarding its application in higher education mathematics. This research introduces the UP-Think (Understanding Participation and Thinking) framework as a novel contribution that integrates two essential dimensions: active student participation and higher-order thinking ability. Participation (asking, responding, collaborating); Thinking (conceptual, critical, creative) measured by easured by observation rubrics, a student-engagement questionnaire, pre–post concept-understanding tests, and a critical/creative thinking rubric with established reliability. Using a mixed-method descriptive evaluative design, data were collected from observations, questionnaires, pre–post tests, and interviews involving students of the Special Education Study Program. The results indicate a substantial increase in participation, with 79% (22/28) of visually impaired students more actively asking questions, 85% (26/28) responding and justifying answers, and 85% (26/28) engaging in group collaboration. In terms of thinking ability, 68% (19/28)achieved notable gains in conceptual understanding, 86% demonstrated consistent critical reasoning, and 78% displayed creative problem-solving strategies. These findings imply that accessible assessment design and lecturer training are essential for sustaining the benefits of UDL. Institutions should invest in systematic professional development and adaptive technology provision so that inclusive mathematics instruction can be implemented consistently and equitably across courses.
