Abstract

This comprehensive study investigates the multifaceted impact of TikTok usage on English language acquisition among adolescent students in HKBP Siantar Timur. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research delves deep into how TikTok influences various aspects of language learning, including vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, speaking skills, and cultural awareness. The study surveyed 21 teenagers aged 15-17, meticulously analyzing their TikTok usage patterns, language preferences, learning strategies, and perceived impacts on English proficiency. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gain richer insights into their experiences and perceptions. Results indicate that while TikTok offers engaging and diverse content for language learning, students face significant challenges such as distraction, content reliability, and the need for critical digital literacy skills. The study reveals complex relationships between TikTok usage frequency, content types, and perceived language improvements. Notably, students who actively engaged with educational content and international users reported higher perceived gains in language skills. This research provides nuanced insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers on leveraging social media platforms for language education in the digital age. It highlights the need for structured guidance, curated content, and the development of digital literacy skills to maximize the potential of platforms like TikTok in formal and informal language learning contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the connotative meanings embedded in television advertisement messages through a semantic approach. As a form of mass communication, advertisements do not only convey messages directly (denotatively), but also imply additional meanings that can influence the audience’s emotions, perceptions, and behavior. In this research, the author examines several television advertisements from various product categories—such as food, beverages, beauty products, and digital services—by focusing on the use of symbolism, word choice, and cultural context that shape connotative meanings. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that connotative meanings in advertisements are often used to build a positive image, evoke emotional responses, and enhance product appeal through associations with social, cultural, and psychological values. These results highlight the importance of understanding connotative meanings in order to foster media literacy and critical awareness of messages received through television broadcasts

Abstract

This study explores the impact of YouTube as a social media platform on the interpretation of denotative meaning from a semantic perspective. While denotative meaning traditionally refers to the literal or dictionary definition of a word, the integration of multimodal features in YouTube—such as tone, visuals, music, and gestures—may cause shifts in how audiences perceive and interpret those meanings. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes selected YouTube videos and their comment sections to examine how literal meanings are expressed by creators and understood by viewers. The findings show that multimodal elements often influence or even override the intended denotative meaning of words, leading to various audience interpretations. This highlights the fluidity of meaning in digital communication, where context and delivery can reshape even the most basic semantic elements. The study contributes to semantic analysis by demonstrating that denotative meaning in online platforms is no longer entirely fixed, and suggests the need for further interdisciplinary research involving semantics, pragmatics, and media discourse.

Abstract

This mini research examines how meanings of words in English change over time and how these changes affect modern language use. Semantic change includes several processes, such as the expansion or restriction of meaning, improvement or worsening of connotation, and shifts in meaning. As stated by Ullmann (1962), changes in word meanings naturally occur in all living languages as a reflection of cultural and social evolution. By analyzing current examples, this study shows how such changes influence how people communicate, how English is taught, and how vocabulary is understood. Recognizing semantic change is important for both native speakers and learners to keep up with the evolving use of language.

Abstract

Perbedaan antara makna leksikal dan gramatikal tetap menjadi aspek penting namun sering disalahpahami dalam analisis linguistik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengklarifikasi interaksi antara kedua dimensi makna ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan deskriptif. Tinjauan pustaka sistematis dilakukan dengan fokus pada karya ilmiah yang diterbitkan dalam dekade terakhir yang mengkaji semantik leksikal dan gramatikal. Sumber dipilih berdasarkan ketelitian metodologis, relevansi, dan keragaman perspektif teoretis. Melalui analisis isi tematik, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi pola-pola yang menyoroti bagaimana makna leksikal berfungsi secara independen, sementara makna gramatikal memberikan isyarat struktural dan kontekstual yang esensial. Temuan penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa komponen-komponen ini pada dasarnya saling terkait dan harus dianalisis secara simultan untuk memahami sepenuhnya nuansa interpretasi semantik. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada bidang teori linguistik yang lebih luas dan menawarkan implikasi berharga bagi pendidikan bahasa dengan mendorong pemahaman makna yang lebih terintegrasi dalam struktur linguistik.

Abstract

Semantic ambiguity constitutes a fundamental impediment in intercultural communication, especially where language and cultural divergences intersect in workplace settings. This qualitative case study examines how Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan and their Taiwanese employers navigate communication challenges arising from linguistic, pragmatic, and cultural ambiguities. Data from interviews, observations, and document analyses reveal that phonological confusions, dialectal variations, indirect speech acts, and divergent cultural norms engender persistent misunderstandings. Findings highlight the need for comprehensive intercultural competence training incorporating linguistic nuances and pragmatic cultural awareness to mitigate ambiguity, improve communication effectiveness, and foster harmonious labor relations.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of homonyms and homographs as sources of semantic ambiguity in daily English communication. Semantic ambiguity occurs when words or phrases can be interpreted in more than one way, leading to misunderstandings in both spoken and written language. Focusing on lexical ambiguity, this research analyzes how homonyms words that share the same spelling and pronunciation but have different, unrelated meanings and homographs words that share spelling but differ in pronunciation and meaning contribute to communication breakdowns. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected from real-life language use, highlighting how individuals interpret ambiguous words based on context. The findings show that without clear contextual cues, these lexical items often lead to misinterpretation. The study emphasizes the importance of context, background knowledge, and linguistic awareness in reducing ambiguity and promoting effective communication. It also suggests practical strategies for educators, learners, and speakers to navigate and resolve ambiguity in everyday language use.

Abstract

In the public service sector, issuing an apology is essential. Customer service representatives, particularly in public services, are typically tasked with handling client complaints. Therefore, public service institutions require effective apology strategies to address these concerns appropriately. This study aims to explore the most commonly used apology strategies by Telkomsel's customer service personnel. The research focuses on identifying which types of apology approaches are more frequently used in everyday interactions. This study may also contribute to a broader understanding of how public services utilize apology strategies. A qualitative research approach is applied in this investigation. The analysis is based on Trosborg’s (1995) framework of apology strategies. Findings indicate that Telkomsel customer service representatives predominantly use explanations or accounts in 50% of the cases when dealing with customer complaints. This approach is often employed to calm customers and ease emotional tension.

Abstract

The web series Layangan Putus, produced by MD Entertainment and directed by Benni Setiawan, premiered in November 2021 on WeTV and iFlix. This study examines metaphors related to betrayal and emotional expression in the series from a semantic perspective. It focuses on how emotional and psychological conflicts are conveyed through metaphorical language, especially those that reflect themes of infidelity, heartbreak, and inner turmoil. The research utilizes a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic analysis approach, analyzing dialogues and scenes using Lakoff and Johnson's Conceptual Metaphor Theory, as outlined in Metaphors We Live By. According to this theory, metaphors are fundamental to how we understand abstract concepts, comparing them to more concrete experiences like money, journeys, or warfare. The study finds that metaphors of betrayal often stem from domains such as war, destruction, and fragmentation (e.g., “inner war,” “shattered into pieces”), while emotional metaphors often draw from physical sensations and natural elements (e.g., “explosive,” “like a storm”). These metaphors enhance the narrative and deepen the audience's emotional connection with the characters. Ultimately, metaphor in Layangan Putus serves as a key element in shaping the story’s emotional impact and audience engagement.

Abstract

Literal language in poetry provides clarity and concrete imagery, while non-literal expressions reveal deeper psychological and cultural meanings. This combination enables readers to engage intellectually and emotionally, fostering a more profound, reflective, and empathetic experience. Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in semantic theory, this study examines Rankine's use of metaphor, irony, symbolism, and conditional expressions to convey themes of identity, emotional conflict, and social tension. This study highlights how Rankine's layered language encourages multiple interpretations, reinforcing the emotional and thematic impact of the poems. Findings suggest that combining literal and figurative analysis in literary studies, particularly in an educational context, can enhance students' understanding and critical thinking skills. By examining how language shapes meaning, this research confirms the educational value of poetry in fostering interpretive skills and emotional awareness.
