Abstract

This research investigates the impact of social media usage on language development in adolescents. The study focuses on how frequent exposure to digital platforms affects vocabulary acquisition, language comprehension, and communication skills. It also examines the influence of online interactions on the development of informal and formal language styles among teenagers. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and in-depth interviews, the findings highlight both the positive and negative effects of social media on language use. While social media fosters creativity and expands vocabulary through constant exposure to diverse content, it also presents challenges such as the informalization of language and potential negative impacts on grammar and writing skills. This research underscores the importance of balancing online interactions with real-world communication and parental guidance in shaping healthy language development in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how social media affects semantic changes in the use of everyday language, particularly in synonym usage. The objective is to explore the impact of social media on the semantic shift and variation of synonyms in daily communication. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in this research. The data were collected through observation of language use on social media platforms such as Twitter and TikTok, supported by documentation and analysis of user-generated content that showcases frequent synonym usage. The findings reveal that social media significantly influences the choice and meaning of synonyms in everyday language, often encouraging more expressive, creative, and informal word usage. Additionally, the study highlights several forms of semantic shifts, such as broadening, narrowing, and meaning change, which are driven by social and cultural interactions in the digital space. These results demonstrate that social media plays a crucial role in shaping contemporary language dynamics from a semantic perspective.

Abstract

This comprehensive study investigates the multifaceted impact of TikTok usage on English language acquisition among adolescent students in HKBP Siantar Timur. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research delves deep into how TikTok influences various aspects of language learning, including vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, speaking skills, and cultural awareness. The study surveyed 21 teenagers aged 15-17, meticulously analyzing their TikTok usage patterns, language preferences, learning strategies, and perceived impacts on English proficiency. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gain richer insights into their experiences and perceptions. Results indicate that while TikTok offers engaging and diverse content for language learning, students face significant challenges such as distraction, content reliability, and the need for critical digital literacy skills. The study reveals complex relationships between TikTok usage frequency, content types, and perceived language improvements. Notably, students who actively engaged with educational content and international users reported higher perceived gains in language skills. This research provides nuanced insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers on leveraging social media platforms for language education in the digital age. It highlights the need for structured guidance, curated content, and the development of digital literacy skills to maximize the potential of platforms like TikTok in formal and informal language learning contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and functions of apologizing as a speech act in everyday communication from a pragmatic and sociolinguistic perspective. Using a qualitative library research method, data were collected from recent scholarly sources and analyzed through the frameworks of speech act theory and politeness theory. The findings show that apologies are influenced by social factors such as power relations, social distance, and the severity of the offense. Apologies are often delivered indirectly, using hedges and softeners to mitigate face threats. This indicates that apologizing is not merely a personal expression of regret, but a strategic act to maintain social harmony.

Abstract

This study investigates semantic ambiguity in translation, with a specific focus on lexical ambiguity in the English–Indonesian translation of the Cinderella short story. Grounded in Nida and Taber’s theory of semantic equivalence and Baker’s framework of non-equivalence, the research examines how lexical items in the source language may lead to multiple interpretations or shifts in meaning when translated into the target language. Using a qualitative content analysis method, the study identifies patterns of meaning distortion resulting from ambiguous or culturally loaded words. The findings indicate that lexical ambiguity significantly contributes to semantic non-equivalence, often causing partial or lost meaning that undermines narrative clarity and coherence. The study highlights the critical role of contextual awareness and lexical precision in literary translation to preserve intended meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the connotative meanings embedded in television advertisement messages through a semantic approach. As a form of mass communication, advertisements do not only convey messages directly (denotatively), but also imply additional meanings that can influence the audience’s emotions, perceptions, and behavior. In this research, the author examines several television advertisements from various product categories—such as food, beverages, beauty products, and digital services—by focusing on the use of symbolism, word choice, and cultural context that shape connotative meanings. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that connotative meanings in advertisements are often used to build a positive image, evoke emotional responses, and enhance product appeal through associations with social, cultural, and psychological values. These results highlight the importance of understanding connotative meanings in order to foster media literacy and critical awareness of messages received through television broadcasts

Abstract

This study explores the impact of YouTube as a social media platform on the interpretation of denotative meaning from a semantic perspective. While denotative meaning traditionally refers to the literal or dictionary definition of a word, the integration of multimodal features in YouTube—such as tone, visuals, music, and gestures—may cause shifts in how audiences perceive and interpret those meanings. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes selected YouTube videos and their comment sections to examine how literal meanings are expressed by creators and understood by viewers. The findings show that multimodal elements often influence or even override the intended denotative meaning of words, leading to various audience interpretations. This highlights the fluidity of meaning in digital communication, where context and delivery can reshape even the most basic semantic elements. The study contributes to semantic analysis by demonstrating that denotative meaning in online platforms is no longer entirely fixed, and suggests the need for further interdisciplinary research involving semantics, pragmatics, and media discourse.

Abstract

This mini research examines how meanings of words in English change over time and how these changes affect modern language use. Semantic change includes several processes, such as the expansion or restriction of meaning, improvement or worsening of connotation, and shifts in meaning. As stated by Ullmann (1962), changes in word meanings naturally occur in all living languages as a reflection of cultural and social evolution. By analyzing current examples, this study shows how such changes influence how people communicate, how English is taught, and how vocabulary is understood. Recognizing semantic change is important for both native speakers and learners to keep up with the evolving use of language.
