Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus may also contribute to cognitive decline.  Risk factors for cognitive decline in patients with type 2 DM include demographic characteristics, clinical conditions, and nutritional intake. However, there is controversy regarding whether micronutrient intake affects cognitive function among type 2 DM. Thus, we aimed to investigate the determinants of cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A cross-sectional design was used in this study. This research was conducted in Marzoeki Mahdi Hospital, Bogor, West Java, from May to June 2023 among 98 respondents. Data on blood glucose levels (HbA1c) were obtained from medical records over the last three months. Nutritional intake was assessed using the SQ-FFQ and cognitive function was assessed using the MoCA-Ina. A significant relationship was found between blood glucose levels, age, illness duration, and cognitive function (r=-0,212, p=0,036; r=-0,736, p=0,0001; r=-0,573, p=0,0001). However, there was no significant relationship between vitamin B12 or C intake and global cognitive function (r=-0,005; p=0,959, r=0,126; p=0,217). There was a relationship between vitamin C and aspects of cognitive function, namely, abstraction (r=0,350, p=0,0001). In conclusion, there is a relationship between blood glucose levels, age, and duration of DM and cognitive function. Vitamin C consumption is associated with abstraction ability.

Abstract

Excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which are typically high in fat content, and insufficient physical activity may adversely influence adolescents’ nutritional status and lead to abdominal obesity. This condition can occur due to individual’s lack of knowledge and eating preferences, which in turn influence adolescents’ consumption behavior. This research aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge, eating preferences, UPF consumption behavior, and nutritional status among students at Citra Kasih Junior High School, Tangerang. This research was cross-sectional with a sample of 102 students carried out in January 2024. The inclusion criteria were students who were physically healthy, willing to participate, not on a specific diet, and not taking diuretic drugs. Data were analyzed using Pearson and Spearman correlation tests. The results showed most respondents had normal nutritional status (58.8%) and low levels of knowledge about UPFs (53.9%). No significant correlations were found between knowledge, UPF eating preferences, and BMI-for-age, nor between knowledge, UPF eating preferences, UPF consumption behavior, and WHR (p > 0.05). However, a significant correlation was observed between UPF consumption behavior and BMI-for-age (p < 0.05). In conclusion, UPF consumption behavior was significantly correlated with adolescents’ nutritional status based on BMI-for-age.

Abstract

Masalah obesitas merupakan masalah kesehatan pada remaja yang menjadi pencetus masalah kesehatan pada kelompok usia selanjutnya.Obesitas sebagai factor resiko penyakit tidak menular seperti hipertensi, penyakit jantung, diabetes mellitus dll. Dengan demikian perlu upaya pencegahan maupun penanganan secara dini sehingga masalah kesehatan selanjutnya tidak akan terjadi. Berdasarkan data awal yang dilakukan di SMPN 59 Bantar Gebang menujukkan tingginya angka obesitas pada siswa siswi yang masuk pada kelompok usia remaja. Program Studi Ilmu GIZI Universitas Esa Unggul melakukan pengabdian masyarakat tentang MAGER dalam upaya penurunan angka obesitas pada remaja. Melihat antusiasme siswa siswi dalam setiap kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa kelompok usia remaja semangat dalam upaya pencegahan dan penanganan obesitas. Ini akan terwujud selanjutnya bila ada program yang memediasi baik dari pihak sekolah, pihak akademisi ataupun pihak pemerintah kesehatan setempat. Sehingga target pemerintah kesehatan untuk menurunkan angka obesitas khususnya pada remaja bisa terlaksana.Kata kunci : remaja, obesitas, edukasi gizi, asupan makan, aktifitas fisik.
