Abstract

This research examines the construction of religious identity through decolonization in Qur'anic learning in postcolonial Indonesia by integrating Berger and Luckmann's Social Construction Theory and Tajfel and Turner's Social Identity Theory within a decolonial framework. Through a systematic literature review of 53 peer-reviewed academic publications (2014-2025) selected through purposive sampling based on relevance to Qur'an pedagogy, identity formation, and decolonial discourse in Indonesia, this study employs thematic analysis within an interpretive, qualitative, and postcolonial approach. Identity formation operates through three mechanisms: externalization of religious values, objectivation in Islamic institutions, and transformative internalization. Decolonization strategies emerge through epistemological reintegration and pedagogical contextualization that bridge Qur'an teachings with the contemporary reality of Indonesia. The multidimensional model conceptualizes identity formation as a process unfolding across three dialectical axes: temporal (deconstruction, reconstruction, co-construction), social (individual, communal, national), and cultural (universality, locality, globality). The synthesized literature findings challenge Western-centered theoretical assumptions: Indonesian Muslims demonstrate multi-layered and intersecting categorizations, culturally meaningful identifications, and reflective comparisons that are contributory rather than competitive. This study advances decolonial Islamic thought by positioning Qur'an learning as an emancipatory epistemological praxis that transcends the anti-Western or pro-Western dichotomy. The Indonesian model shows how decolonization manifests in daily pedagogical practices rather than in abstract discourse, offering a replicable framework for global Muslim communities that negotiate authentic identity within postcolonial modernity without reproducing Western hegemony or reactive fundamentalism.

Abstract

Community health cadres often struggle to access fast, accurate, and easy-to-understand information while performing their duties, largely due to irregular training and limited access to updated learning materials. To address this issue, Kalijambe Public Health Center developed Sirsak Jambe, a WhatsApp-based chatbot designed to provide essential competency materials in a practical and flexible format. This descriptive qualitative study involved interviews with health center staff and cadres to assess the implementation of Sirsak Jambe using three dimensions of digital innovation: product, environment, and organization. The findings show that Sirsak Jambe is easy to use, responsive, and provides concise, reliable content that helps cadres quickly solve problems encountered in the field. The social and technological environment of the area supports its use, although challenges remain related to internet connectivity and varying digital literacy levels. Organizational support, staff capacity, and an innovative work culture further enhance implementation, though formal SOPs and regular updates are still needed. The study concludes that Sirsak Jambe is a relevant and beneficial digital solution for improving cadres’ basic competencies, yet its sustainability requires strengthened management and continuous support.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines how male teachers in Early Childhood Education (ECE) renegotiate masculine identity within a historically feminized profession in Indonesia. It demonstrates how authority is reorganized through relational pedagogy and emotional regulation, situating masculinity negotiation within debates on workforce diversification, teacher quality, and inclusive education under SDG 4.Design/methods/approach – This study employed an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design to explore the lived experiences of six male Early Childhood Education teachers from three regions. Primary data were generated through in depth semi structured interviews, which formed the basis for idiographic thematic analysis and cross case interpretation. A national Focus Group Discussion involving 162 male teachers was observed as contextual support without contributing to theme development. Analysis was conducted through case by case interpretation informed by hegemonic masculinity theory, supported by audit trails and reflexive documentation to ensure trustworthiness.Findings – The findings reveal a layered reconfiguration of masculinity across micro, meso, and macro contexts. At the classroom level, authority is stabilized through emotional self-regulation and co-regulative interaction rather than dominance. At the symbolic level, leadership and paternal imagery are recalibrated through dialogical engagement and professional competence, including STEM-based pedagogical practice. At the collective level, professional networks function as stabilizing infrastructures that reframe individual doubt as structural negotiation. Within Muslim-majority society, moral vocabulary operates as a contextual resource that reinforces professional legitimacy without displacing the central focus on educational quality.Research implications/limitations – The study contributes to international scholarship by demonstrating how masculinity in ECE can be institutionally stabilized through relational practice and communal embedding in Global South contexts. Limitations include the qualitative and context-bound design, absence of cross-national comparison, and reliance on teachers who remain in the profession, suggesting directions for longitudinal and comparative research.Practical implications – The findings inform teacher education and policy discussions on workforce diversification, highlighting how gender-sensitive pedagogy, emotional literacy, and professional community support can enhance retention and legitimacy of male teachers in ECE systems.Originality/value – By identifying the micro-level mechanisms through which masculine authority is reconstructed in everyday ECE practice, this study advances understanding of gender negotiation within Muslim-majority societies.Paper type Phenomenological Qualitative Study
