Abstract

Way Belerang Simpur is a sulfur-containing hot spring that serves as a popular tourist destination for hot spring baths. This study aims to evaluate the water quality of the spring using physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Water samples were taken from three points: the source (Point 1), the bathing area (Point 2), and the downstream flow (Point 3). The parameters analyzed include temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), odor, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total coliform bacteria. Standard testing methods such as mercury thermometers, pH meters, spectrophotometry, and SNI protocols were used. Results show that temperature and odor meet national standards for safe water, but pH levels were highly acidic, exceeding acceptable limits for public bathing. DO levels were adequate to support aquatic life, while BOD, COD, and H2S were within acceptable limits. The biological analysis revealed very low levels of total coliform bacteria, making the water microbiologically safe. Overall, the water quality at Way Belerang Simpur is suitable in terms of contamination levels but presents risks due to its high temperature and low pH, especially for prolonged exposure.

Abstract

Each tribe has a tradition of ethnobotanical plant utilization and management, one of which is the Tamiang tribe. The community realizes the potential of plant utilization, thus creating considerable economic opportunities for bioprospection. This study used the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method to collect data by actively involving the community. Semi-structured interview techniques were conducted to explore ethnobotanical information from the Tamiang tribe. From the results of the Slovin analysis, 600 respondents with an age range of 35 to 94 years were obtained. Snowball sampling was used to select respondents. Determination of Sub-district locations selected six Sub-districts from 12 Subdistricts by purposive sampling with the largest number of Tamiang Tribe. The results showed that there were 225 species from 74 families used by the Tamiang people in treating various diseases. The most commonly cured diseases are fever, diabetes, and hypertension. Tagetes erecta is the most widely recognized medicinal plant species with a relative citation frequency index of 1.00. At the same time, Andrographis elongata is the most frequently used medicinal plant by the local community with a use value index of 1.00. In addition, local people identified the leaf organ (60.89%) as the most commonly used part of the plant, while decoction (58.20%) was the most popular method of administering traditional medicine. Both species of Andrographis elongata and Moringa oleifera have the potential to treat diabetes and hypertension as seen from the highest ICS value as prospective plants in the utilization and management of medicinal plants, so they can be developed as raw materials for herbal medicine.

Abstract

Public awareness of healthy lifestyles and the benefits of natural products, including fermented beverages, has been increasing. However, fermented beverages remain relatively unfamiliar to the community, while the utilization of natural waste materials for functional products has become a major concern. One potential waste material in Telaga Meuku II Village is pineapple peel, which can be processed into a diversified functional food product known as tepache, a probiotic-rich fermented beverage with health benefits. This Community Service Program (PKM) was conducted in partnership with PKK team and residents of Telaga Meuku II Village. The partners faced several challenges, including limited education regarding the benefits of fermented beverages, inadequate skills in the fermentation process, and insufficient understanding of tepache production, packaging, and marketing. This PKM aimed to address these challenges through a series of activities carried out over four months using a participatory approach. The program stages included preparation and coordination with partners, socialization and education on probiotic beverages, hands-on training in tepache production, operational assistance, packaging guidance, as well as program monitoring and evaluation. Evaluation results based on survey analysis indicated a very good level of partner/participant satisfaction, with an average score of 3.69. In addition to increasing community awareness of the benefits of probiotic beverages, this program also created business opportunities that have the potential to improve the local community’s economy.
