Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the lexical density of six children’s stories in order to assess the richness and complexity of language usage in these texts. The study examined the selected stories from a children’s storybook using a qualitative content analysis technique to identify the fraction of content words, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, that contribute to the total lexical density. To measure the lexical density of the storybooks, the analytical approaches were inspired by Ure (1971) and Halliday (1985). The findings demonstrated varying degrees of lexical density in children's storybooks, providing insights into the variable vocabulary and linguistic complexity used in these writings.

Abstract

Generation Z can be regarded as a generation that since they were born have grown up with the internet. The digital generation's reliance on information and communication technologies in both personal and professional affairs may be at an all-time high. Because they are "technologically proficient," they have some competitive advantages over previous generations. As a result, Gen Zers are prepared and motivated to work in a multicultural business environment, contributing to the advancement of globalization and interconnection. Without a doubt, in today's environment, the transformation of the global workforce is the most globally oriented. With globalization and technology continuing to have an impact, Gen Zers' way of thinking supports cross-cultural social engagement and communication, making bridge leadership skills and strategies increasingly more crucial for CEOs of large and small businesses.

Abstract

As the pandemic is forcing people to stay at home for a longer period of time, activities and social interactions also moved from physical to digital world. This shift of change revealed the unfavorable nature of Indonesians’ netizen behaviors in the internet, labelled as ‘The rudest netizen’ in Southeast Asia for their ferociousness in online communication. This paper aims to investigate the perception of Indonesian internet users at the use of taboo words used in humor in intercultural online communication. Primary and secondary data were collected by observational method and qualitative descriptive method was used to present the analysis. The finding of this paper suggested that generally, 75% of the audiences on TikTok and YouTube have positive perception toward the usage of taboo words in public setting by taking context awareness, timing and intent into consideration.

Abstract

This research investigates the naming of huta (traditional residences) in Toba Regency from an anthropolinguistic approach, aiming to describe the linguistic performance and to formulate the underlying naming patterns. The research problem emerges from the diminishing awareness among younger generations, which threatens the continuity of historical knowledge and cultural identity embedded in huta names. Using a qualitative design with an interactive model, data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and supported by document analysis of oral narratives and archival sources. The findings reveal that a total of 92 huta names were identified, of which 82 are polymorphemic and only 10 are monomorphemic. Polymorphemic names reflect productive morphological processes such as affixation, reduplication, and compounding, and frequently encode ecological features (e.g., rivers, hills, flora, and fauna) as well as kinship relations and cultural values. Further analysis shows that naming aspects can be categorized into manifestation (39.13%), society (33.70%), and culture (27.17%). The predominance of manifestation aspects illustrates the Batak Toba people’s ecological orientation, while the presence of clan names and ancestral references highlights the strong kinship system. Cultural aspects, meanwhile, preserve collective memories of historical events, tools, and symbolic practices. These findings show that huta naming constitute a multidimensional system that integrate linguistic, ecological, social, and cultural elements, functioning both as spatial marker and as instrument of cultural preservation. This research contributes to the development of place naming research in Indonesia and underscores the need to safeguard local wisdom through documentation and cultural education.

Abstract

The proliferation of the English language has resulted in the blending of the English language and culture into the national and indigenous languages of emerging countries, including Indonesia. Although most people in North Aceh, Indonesia, are Acehnese, some restaurants and coffee shops are named in English. This study explores how English acculturation in the naming of food and coffee shops affects the visibility and preservation of local languages in this area. Using Berrys acculturation framework, the research categorizes naming practices into assimilation, integration, and isolation, analyzing how English, Indonesian, and Acehnese elements are blended or separated in commercial branding. Data were gathered through interviews with business owners and customers, as well as observations of shop names and menus. The findings reveal that assimilation is the most dominant strategy, reflecting a preference for English-language branding as a symbol of modernity and prestige, particularly among younger entrepreneurs. However, some businesses still adopt integrated or local naming conventions to retain cultural identity. These practices have sociolinguistic implications, as the increased dominance of English may marginalize the Acehnese language in public spaces. The study calls for culturally responsive language planning to ensure a balance between global appeal and local heritage in commercial language use.
