Abstract

Arabic Language Education study program students at IAIN Palangka Raya are prospective Arabic teachers who are prepared to have foreign language competence, but students still experience difficulties for various reasons. It makes all PBA Education study program lecturers simultaneously implement several activities in selected subjects to build literacy in reading books in foreign languages, both Arabic and English. This research aims to describe the process carried out by lecturers in building reading literacy of foreign language books, either Arabic or English, on PBA students in IAIN Palangka Raya. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected from the interview, observation, and documentation, then further analyzed through data reduction, presentation, and verification, and validated with the triangulation method. The initial result of this research indicated that the lecturers do various activities to build students’ reading literacy, those are: introducing reading references in Arabic and English language, explaining the advantages of reading these references to the students, giving insight into reading steps, assigning students to review the references, and assisting students in composing and publishing scientific papers. This research suggests writing literacy for students and further research on different subjects and locations.

Abstract

This study examines the application of the Silent Way method (At-Thariqah Al-Shamitah) in Arabic language learning, with a focus on enhancing students' maharatul istima’ (listening skills). The Silent Way method, which emphasizes the active role of students in the learning process and limits teacher intervention, is used to improve listening skills through Arabic language instruction. This research employs a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach consisting of three cycles: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In each cycle, the teacher applies Silent Way strategies, observes student progress, and makes continuous improvements based on observation results. The study results show that the application of the Silent Way method significantly improves students' listening abilities in Arabic language learning. Data were obtained from pre- and post-cycle tests, classroom observations, and student feedback. Data analysis indicates an increase in the average maharatul istima’ scores and an improvement in student engagement and motivation in the learning process. The study concludes that the Silent Way method is effective in enhancing students' listening skills and recommends this method as an alternative strategy in Arabic language instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to design and develop Arabic orthography instructional materials using the Kahoot platform integrated with gamification to enhance students’ understanding of Arabic writing rules. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, involving 60 students from MAN 1 Boalemo. The development process included needs analysis, content design, material digitization, validation, implementation, and evaluation. Expert validation confirmed high feasibility with ratings of 88% (media expert), 83% (content expert), and 92% (language expert). Trial implementation showed strong acceptance from both teachers (89%) and students (80%). Learning effectiveness was measured through pretest and posttest, with mean scores improving from 58.85 to 84.20. Paired sample t-tests indicated statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05), while normality tests confirmed data distribution was normal. The results suggest that gamified instructional design using Kahoot effectively boosts student motivation, engagement, and mastery of Arabic orthography. This work contributes to the field by offering an engaging, scalable, and pedagogically sound solution for Arabic language learning in digital environments.

Abstract

This study explores the lived learning experiences of non-pesantren students in Arabic language learning alongside pesantren students at IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo. Although previous studies have examined learning difficulties and competency disparities in Arabic language learning, limited attention has been paid to how non-pesantren students interpret their socio-academic experiences in heterogeneous classrooms. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study involved 20 non-pesantren students. Data were collected through reflective forms and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings reveal that differences in educational background create initial competency gaps that shape students’ psychological and socio-academic experiences. Non-pesantren students initially experienced anxiety and low self-confidence; however, these challenges also fostered motivation and academic adaptation. Interaction with pesantren peers functioned as academic support through collaborative learning and peer assistance. Students also developed self-regulated learning strategies by utilizing digital resources and peer discussions. The study contributes to Arabic language learning research by demonstrating that heterogeneous classrooms function as spaces for academic identity negotiation, peer-mediated adaptation, and learner agency. Therefore, inclusive instructional management is needed to accommodate students from diverse educational backgrounds.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed foreign language learning, including Arabic speaking instruction (Maharah al-Kalam). This study aims to examine the digital transformation of Maharah al-Kalam learning through a theoretical review of modern pedagogical approaches. The study explores how digital technologies, multimedia platforms, mobile learning, and learner-centered pedagogies contribute to the development of Arabic speaking skills and communicative competence. This research employed a qualitative theoretical literature review design by analyzing scholarly publications related to Arabic language learning, digital pedagogy, Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Mobile-Assisted Language Learning, communicative language teaching, and technology-enhanced instruction. The data were collected through systematic literature searching and analyzed using qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that digital technologies significantly improve learner engagement, speaking practice opportunities, interaction, motivation, and learner autonomy. Tools such as animation applications, digital storytelling, social media platforms, artificial intelligence systems, and blended learning environments create more communicative and interactive Arabic speaking instruction. Modern pedagogical approaches, particularly communicative and constructivist models, further support the development of authentic speaking competence by promoting collaboration, active participation, and meaningful language use. However, several challenges remain, including limited technological infrastructure, insufficient teacher digital competence, vocabulary limitations, and unequal access to digital resources. The study concludes that the integration of digital technology and modern pedagogy offers transformative potential for Maharah al-Kalam learning when supported by appropriate instructional design, teacher preparedness, and communicative learning objectives.

Abstract

The growing emphasis on culturally responsive pedagogy has highlighted the need to integrate indigenous knowledge into language education; however, limited attention has been given to how local cultural values can function as epistemological resources in Arabic semantic learning. This study examines how code-mixing serves as an epistemological strategy for connecting Arabic semantic concepts with the indigenous values of Gorontalo, Indonesia, namely tulodu (exemplary conduct), lo lipu (social affection), and momuliyo (dignified patience). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis involving Arabic language lecturers and undergraduate students at an Islamic higher education institution. The data were analyzed using an integrated framework combining Muysken’s code-mixing typology, contextual semantics, and ethnopedagogical principles. The findings reveal that code-mixing functions not merely as a linguistic practice but as a pedagogical and epistemological mechanism that contextualizes meaning, facilitates semantic comprehension, and promotes moral and cultural internalization. By linking abstract Arabic concepts with culturally familiar references, learners develop deeper cognitive, affective, and reflective engagement with language. The study contributes to the advancement of multilingual education and ethnopedagogical scholarship by demonstrating how indigenous knowledge can enrich semantic learning and offers a culturally grounded model for language education in multicultural and religiously diverse contexts.
