Abstract

Background: In Medan City, 12.42% of adolescents aged 15-24 years, or approximately 48,311 teenagers, are smokers. Adolescents from broken homes are at a higher risk of psychological distres, which can lead to negative behaviors such as smoking. Purpose: To examine and analyze the level of smoking addiction among adolescents and how the father's role influences it. Method: A quantitative analytical survey with a cross-sectional design was conducted. The population consisted of high school students, with a sample of 1,221 adolescents who had lived in Medan for at least five years. The instruments used were the Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents (GASA) and the Fatherhood Scale 64 (FS-64). Statistical analysis included ANOVA, Pearson Correlation, and Chi-Square tests. Results: Fatherless adolescents were 3.06 times more likely to be light smokers compared to those with a positive father figure. A significant negative correlation was found, indicating that the higher the father's role score, the lower the level of smoking addiction. Conclusion: The lack of a father figure in a child's life contributes to smoking addiction. The stronger the father's role in a child's life, the lower the level of smoking addiction, and vice versa. Terdapat korelasi negatif signifikan dimana semakin tinggi skor peran ayah semakin rendah kecanduan merokok. Kesimpulan: Kurangnya peran ayah dalam kehidupan anak menyebabkan anak kecanduan merokok. Semakin tinggi peran ayah dalam hidup anak, maka semakin rendah tingkat kecanduan merokok pada anak, begitupun sebaliknya.

Abstract

Anemia is a widespread global health problem and affects 56 million women worldwide, and two-thirds of them are in Asia, one of which is Indonesia. Based on Riskesdas 2018, anemia among pregnant women aged 15-24 years was 84.6%. This study aimed to determine the risk factors for anemia in pregnancy among adolescents. This study used a cross-sectional design. The location of this research is in Negeri Lama Public Health Center (PHC) in Negeri Lama Seberang, Bilih Hilir District, Labuhanbatu Regency, North Sumatra Province. The sample size was 120 samples using the formula difference between two proportions as sample size formula. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between compliance with iron and folic acid (IFA) consumption (P=0.000; PR:2.442), compliance with antenatal care (ANC) visits (P=0.028; PR:1.565), mental health status (P=0.00; PR:1.408). Based on the results of this study, it is known that the risk factors that are related to the incidence of anemia are compliance with IFA consumption, ANC visits, and mental health status.

Abstract

Abstract. Tropical countries are the largest contributor to the incidence of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), but research on risk factors is still independent in various countries, it cannot be concluded holistically. Through the research design, a systematic review is able to summarize and answer the causes of DHF in this tropical country. This research method is a systematic review with guidelines following the 2009 PRISMA Checklist. In the initial search, 1,680 articles were found using the keyword “risk factors for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever”, reduced to 274 article titles after adding the keyword “tropical country”. Furthermore, the relevant abstracts were filtered and found 37 selected article items. Through critical appraisal of the full text of the article, it was found that 17 articles met the selection criteria for further review in this study. The results showed that there were 5 major groups of risk factors that were widely studied, namely sociodemography, climatology, place of dwelling, environment, and behavior. The sociodemographic factor associated with the incidence of DHF in tropical countries is age. In terms of climatology, temperature and rainfall are important factors in the vector breeding process. Rural areas (rural areas) are the place of dwelling with the most cases of DHF found. The environmental aspect that has been widely studied is mosquito breeding. The most significant risk behavior factor in transmission was the behavior of hanging clothes. Of the 17 articles, it was found that 77.8% of the articles examined environmental variables.

Abstract

Background: A meta-analysis conducted in 2019 reported that 22.1% of individuals engaged in self-harming behaviors, with 17% of these cases occurring among adolescents. However, empirical research examining the association between paternal involvement and adolescent self-harm remains limited, warranting further investigation. Purpose: This study aims to assess paternal role in relation to self harm. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Medan, Indonesia, involving a sample of 1,221 high school students. Data collection utilized the Self-Harm Inventory (SHI). Statistical analyses included proportion and central distribution tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. Results: The findings reveal a statistically significant association between paternal involvement and self-harm behavior. Adolescents experiencing fatherlessness were found to be 15.42 times more likely to engage in self-harming behavior compared to those with positively involved fathers. Furthermore, a negative correlation was observed between paternal involvement and self-harm scores, indicating that reduced paternal engagement is associated with higher levels of self-harming behavior among adolescents. Conclusion: The absence of a father figure or inadequate paternal involvement is significantly associated with increased self-harm behavior in adolescents. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions, including psychotherapeutic support and active involvement of close family members, to mitigate self-harm among this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relationship between age and immunization completeness and the occurrence of measles in Medan City in 2022.Methods: This study is quantitative research with a case-control study design. The respondents in this study are the entire population of Medan City. The sample size for this research is 96 respondents, with 48 in the case group and 48 in the control group, all recorded in the measles case report at the Health Department of Medan City in 2022. The study was conducted from January to July 2023.Results: Forty respondents in this study belonged to the toddler group, and most of whom had an incomplete immunization history. Based on chi-square analysis, a significant relationship was found between age and the occurrence of measles (p-value < 0.05), as well as between immunization completeness and the occurrence of measles (p-value < 0.05) with an odds ratio (OR) of 11.0. This means that respondents who are not immunized are 11 times more likely to experience measles compared to those who are immunized. Respondents with incomplete immunization are also 11 times more likely to experience measles compared to those with complete immunization. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between age and immunization completeness and the occurrence of measles. Respondents with an incomplete immunization history are at 11 times higher risk of experiencing measles compared to those with a complete immunization history. For future research, it is recommended to increase the number of study respondents and further explore and expand on risk factors such as the history of contact with measles cases in the city of Medan.
