Abstract

This study investigates the use of interactive metadiscourse in Arabic research article abstracts, with particular attention to rhetorical differences between native Arab writers and non-native Indonesian writers. Metadiscourse in abstracts is crucial, as it shapes textual clarity, coherence, and the perceived credibility of scholarly work. Drawing on Hyland’s framework of interactive metadiscourse, this study analyzed forty Arabic research article abstracts, consisting of twenty abstracts written by native Arab authors and twenty by non-native Indonesian authors. The data were coded using a structured codebook and quantitatively analyzed to examine the distribution of interactive metadiscourse categories across both groups. The findings reveal significant rhetorical differences. Non-native writers tend to employ interactive metadiscourse more explicitly to signal research purposes, stages, and logical relations, while native writers rely more heavily on implicit cohesion, reflecting established Arabic rhetorical conventions. These patterns indicate that cultural and academic backgrounds play an important role in shaping abstract writing practices. By situating these findings within the perspective of contrastive rhetoric, this study extends existing metadiscourse research and provides pedagogical implications for improving kitābah instruction for non-native learners of Arabic.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental component in mastering the Arabic language, as it forms the basis for all language skills. Technological advancements in education are driving the utilization of social media as an alternative learning tool, particularly through Instagram and TikTok within the context of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). This study aims to describe the digitalization of Arabic vocabulary learning through these two platforms. The method used is qualitative, employing techniques of observation, document study, and triangulation. The findings show that vocabulary learning is presented multimodally through text, visuals, audio, translations, and semantic relations such as synonyms and antonyms, which is proven to enhance learners' comprehension and retention. This research introduces a novel approach by integrating the linguistic and visual aspects of social media as a model for digital vocabulary instruction. Further research is recommended to examine its impact specifically on Arabic language skills.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of speech acts that emerge in interactions between Indonesian migrant nurse and her patients and colleagues in hospital environments. The research employs a single-case qualitative interview study using a pragmatic analysis approach. The participant was Indonesian migrant nurse working in hospital settings abroad. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to explore the nurse’ communicative experiences, and the data source consists of interview-based utterance excerpts rather than real-time recorded interactions. The data include utterances occurring between nurse and patients as well as between nurse and colleagues, as recalled by the participant. These utterances were analyzed and classified based on Searle’s speech act theory. The analysis identified 29 utterances: 12 assertive, 11 directive, 4 commissive, 2 expressive, and no declarative utterances. The findings were further interpreted using Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. The analysis demonstrates that speech acts function not merely as linguistic phenomena but as expressions of the nurse’ habitus, symbolic capital, and positioning within the healthcare field. Migrant nurse strategically use language to gain legitimacy, maintain professional authority, and negotiate power relations in clinical interactions. These findings contribute to a better understanding of migrant healthcare communication and offer practical implications for communication training and intercultural competence development in healthcare institutions.

Abstract

Han characters (汉字) constitute one of the oldest continuously used logographic writing systems in the world, and as such they encode millennia of accumulated cultural values, social hierarchies, and ideological assumptions. This study empirically investigates the representation of women through Han characters containing the radical 女 (nǚ, ‘woman’) by employing a cultural-linguistic framework integrating corpus-based quantitative analysis, semiotic deconstruction, and critical discourse analysis. The research corpus comprises 214 characters drawn from the Kangxi Dictionary (康熙字典) and the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (现代汉语词典, 7th edition, 2016); a supplementary diachronic corpus of 50 characters with documented oracle bone forms was drawn from the Xiaoxuetang Database of Ancient Chinese Scripts (小學堂). Frequency analysis was conducted against the MARKUS corpus (45 classical texts spanning the Han through Qing dynasties, totaling approximately 2.3 million characters). Results indicate that of the 214 characters analyzed, 61.2% carry connotations that subordinate, restrict, or pathologize the feminine; 22.4% are semantically neutral-descriptive; and only 16.4% bear positive connotations. These findings confirm that the Han writing system functions as an ideological apparatus that reproduces and consolidates patriarchal norms embedded in pre-modern and contemporary Chinese society. The study has implications for language pedagogy in the Indonesian context of Chinese-language education, for script reform policy, and for the broader scholarly debate on writing systems as ideological apparatus.
