Abstract

The article titled "THE PROBLEMATICS OF THE MEANING OF A CHILD'S STATUS IN NATIONAL LAW: BETWEEN LEGAL CERTAINTY AND JUSTICE" written by the Author raises the issue of analysis regarding the view of Judges who consider justice should be prioritized over legal certainty in delivering criminal verdicts, especially against Children who conflict with the law. The Author focuses on the limitations of the criminal sentence imposed on Children, then analyzes the provision against the verdict of the Penajam State Court No. 3/Pid.Sus-Child/2024/PN Pnj which exercised judicial activism by imposing a prison sentence exceeding the provisions in Law No. 11 of 2012 on the Juvenile Justice System. The result of the research conducted by the Author is that a criminal sentence of imprisonment can be imposed on the child. If threatened with a life imprisonment or death penalty provision, then the Child can only be sentenced to a maximum of ½, so the maximum imprisonment sentence allowed is 10 years. However, this is countered by the Presiding Judge of Case Number 3/Pid.Sus-Child/2024/PN Pnj by imposing a 20-year prison sentence on Child Junaedi, prioritizing justice over legal certainty.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of interactive metadiscourse in Arabic research article abstracts, with particular attention to rhetorical differences between native Arab writers and non-native Indonesian writers. Metadiscourse in abstracts is crucial, as it shapes textual clarity, coherence, and the perceived credibility of scholarly work. Drawing on Hyland’s framework of interactive metadiscourse, this study analyzed forty Arabic research article abstracts, consisting of twenty abstracts written by native Arab authors and twenty by non-native Indonesian authors. The data were coded using a structured codebook and quantitatively analyzed to examine the distribution of interactive metadiscourse categories across both groups. The findings reveal significant rhetorical differences. Non-native writers tend to employ interactive metadiscourse more explicitly to signal research purposes, stages, and logical relations, while native writers rely more heavily on implicit cohesion, reflecting established Arabic rhetorical conventions. These patterns indicate that cultural and academic backgrounds play an important role in shaping abstract writing practices. By situating these findings within the perspective of contrastive rhetoric, this study extends existing metadiscourse research and provides pedagogical implications for improving kitābah instruction for non-native learners of Arabic.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental component in mastering the Arabic language, as it forms the basis for all language skills. Technological advancements in education are driving the utilization of social media as an alternative learning tool, particularly through Instagram and TikTok within the context of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). This study aims to describe the digitalization of Arabic vocabulary learning through these two platforms. The method used is qualitative, employing techniques of observation, document study, and triangulation. The findings show that vocabulary learning is presented multimodally through text, visuals, audio, translations, and semantic relations such as synonyms and antonyms, which is proven to enhance learners' comprehension and retention. This research introduces a novel approach by integrating the linguistic and visual aspects of social media as a model for digital vocabulary instruction. Further research is recommended to examine its impact specifically on Arabic language skills.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of speech acts that emerge in interactions between Indonesian migrant nurse and her patients and colleagues in hospital environments. The research employs a single-case qualitative interview study using a pragmatic analysis approach. The participant was Indonesian migrant nurse working in hospital settings abroad. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to explore the nurse’ communicative experiences, and the data source consists of interview-based utterance excerpts rather than real-time recorded interactions. The data include utterances occurring between nurse and patients as well as between nurse and colleagues, as recalled by the participant. These utterances were analyzed and classified based on Searle’s speech act theory. The analysis identified 29 utterances: 12 assertive, 11 directive, 4 commissive, 2 expressive, and no declarative utterances. The findings were further interpreted using Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. The analysis demonstrates that speech acts function not merely as linguistic phenomena but as expressions of the nurse’ habitus, symbolic capital, and positioning within the healthcare field. Migrant nurse strategically use language to gain legitimacy, maintain professional authority, and negotiate power relations in clinical interactions. These findings contribute to a better understanding of migrant healthcare communication and offer practical implications for communication training and intercultural competence development in healthcare institutions.

Abstract

The shift of professional medical communication onto digital plat types like YouTube requires doctors to balance technical authority (professionalism) with relational closeness (empathy). However, previous studies tend to discuss these dimensions separately, leaving limited attention to how both are strategically integrated in doctor-influencer discourse. This study focuses on the integration of professionalism and empathy, examined in the case of Dr. Ikhsan as a doctor-influencer through Expressive Speech Acts (ESA). This descriptive qualitative research employs a two-layered analytic framework incorporating a Type (taxonomy of expressive speech acts by Searle) and Style (Tannen’s distinction between Report and Rapport talk) pragmatic- philosophical framework. The data comprises a finite number of spoken words from selected episodes of the podcast “Uung Victoria” on YouTube and represents a speech unit. The findings show that Dr. Ikhsan demonstrates discursive flexibility across report-talk (assertive) and rapport-talk (relational) styles, enabling him to perform expressive acts not merely as emotional expressions but as strategic tools for social criticism, persuasive health education, and relational engagement. Rather than conforming to a rigid gendered communication dichotomy, his discourse reflects a dynamic integration of authoritative and empathetic positioning. This study contributes to digital medical pragmatics by demonstrating how expressive speech acts construct a care-based authority identity in online professional discourse, offering practical insight for medical professionals seeking effective and ethical communication in digital public spaces.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct gamification practices, often confined to mere structural aspects (pointsification), toward a deeper ontological understanding of play, while analyzing the convergence of educational philosophy with technological interventions. The scope of the research focuses on the implementation of the Homo Ludens concept within the context of Indonesian language learning spanning from 2020 to 2025. The methodology employed is a Narrative Literature Review (NLR), utilizing Johan Huizinga’s philosophical lens and a thematic analysis based on Roger Caillois’ typology of play. The research data model comprises 21 articles selected from the Crossref database, harvested via Harzing’s Publish or Perish, and screened through a Manual Quality Assessment (MQA) of reputable journals indexed in SINTA and Scopus. The findings reveal a fundamental paradigm shift wherein play has evolved into a core pedagogy, particularly within elementary education. Specifically, the study identifies a dominance of the agôn (competition) category, which enhances cognitive metrics but poses a risk of fostering transactional motivation. Conversely, the mimicry category and the concept of the magic circle prove vital in establishing a safe space for graceful failure, thereby reducing language anxiety. The study concludes that a balanced instructional design between competition and imagination is essential to preserve human agency amidst the rising dominance of Artificial Intelligence.
