Abstract

The accession of mulberry (Morus sp.) with salinity tolerance unavailable in Indonesia is needed to overcome the problem of marginal land, especially in the saline areas of the country. Therefore, this research aims to determine the accession of salinity tolerance of mulberry from 6 origins in Indonesia based on growth and physiological parameters. The method used was a factorial randomized block design with the first treatment of stem cutting-derived mulberry accession being M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, and M7, while the second was the concentration of NaCl at 0 mM, 40 mM, 60 mM, and 80 mM. The results showed that M2 accession from Bogor was categorized as tolerance to high salt stress, and M1 was classified as sensitive accession. Increasing salt concentration causes a decrease in growth parameters. It also decreased physiological parameters such as leaf and media relative water content while increasing dissolved sugars. Genotypic scores indicate salinity tolerance and the potential number of leaves, while Na+ content and leaf necrosis percentage showed sodium toxicity in the leaf. Therefore, genotypic score, Na+/K+ ratio, and leaf necrosis percentage are the best parameters to select and identify mulberry accession with high salt stress tolerance.

Abstract

An increase in the number of somatic cells to more than 400.000 cells/mL and the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the milk during normal lactation are two characteristics of subclinical mastitis. The purpose of this study was to compare subclinical mastitis-positive cows with healthy cows in terms of somatic cells count and milk composition, as well as the relationship between these two variables. Acquire from PT. Great Giant Livestock, a total of 29 fresh milk samples from 9 dairy cows tested positive for subclinical mastitis. The Breed method was used to determine the somatic cell count. Lactoscan was used to count the milk composition including fat, protein, lactose, solid non-fat, total solids, and density. The correlation between the somatic cell count and milk quality was tested using the Rank Spearman and the differences in milk quality between healthy cows and subclinical mastitis-positive cows were analyzed using Mann Whitney U. According to the data, subclinical mastitis-positive cows had more somatic cells than healthy cows. Furthermore, subclinical mastitis-affected cows provide milk of lower quality. Dairy cows with subclinical mastitis and healthy cows had significantly different milk composition (p< 0,05). The correlation between the number of somatic cells and milk composition was highly significant (p< 0,05). Subclinical mastitis-positive cows have a higher number of somatic cell and lower milk composition compared to healthy cows. The somatic cells count has a relationship with the composition of milk.

Abstract

Standardization of the quality of the depolarized katuk pellet production process as a feed additive is very important to maintain product quality. The production process requires dry katuk leaves (DKK) as raw materials which are then processed into depolarized katuk leaves (DKD), and continues in the pelleting process to become depolarized katuk pellets (PKD). Quality standard can be done by measuring the parameters of nutritional value and also the yield of methanol extract. Nutritional values were obtained from the results of proximate analysis, namely the percentage of dry matter, ash content, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat, beta-N, calcium, phosphorus, and gross energy (Cal/g). Mean while, the yield of methanol extract was obtained by maceration using methanol solvent. This study aims to evaluate the nutritional value and yield of crude methanol extract of katuk leaves (DKK, DKD, PKD) which can be used as a quality assurance standard for the depolarized katuk pellet production process. In general, the nutritional value of DKD and PKD had the same value as that of DKK, except for calcium which was quite high (P<0.05) in DKD and PKD, and the percentage of crude fiber was lower (P<0.05) in PKD compared to DKK and DKD. The percentage of crude fat in pellets (PKD) was higher (P<0.05) when compared to DKK and DKD. The yield of methanol extract was very high (P<0.05) in DKK, compared to DKD and PKD. The nutritional parameters and the yield of the katuk leaf extract can be used as quality assurance standards for the depolarized katuk pellet production process. Abstract

Various treatments for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) aim to alleviate hyperglycemia. Although natural products have been extensively utilized, their mechanism of action and efficacy as antidiabetic agents, particularly for T2DM, has not been extensively assessed in vivo. In this research, the leaves of the Namnam (Cynometra cauliflora) were extracted and tested for their activity as an antidiabetic agent. Sprague Dawley rats aged 3.5-4 months, weighing 200-250 g, were used as the experimental model, with a total of 30 individuals. The rats were induced with a high-fat diet and 30% sucrose until their blood glucose concentration reached ≥ 120 mg/dL. Subsequently, the rats were divided into four groups (groups 1, 2, 3, and 4). Over 21 days, changes in blood glucose, triacylglycerol, glycogen, and blood plasma insulin levels were assessed. The results demonstrated that the methanol extract of Namnam leaves (NLME) effectively reduced blood glucose levels by 23-34%, decreased plasma triglyceride levels by 13-30%, and increased liver glycogen levels by 68-96% compared to the control group (Diabetes). Among all the parameters assessed, NLME exhibited similar performance to metformin, a commonly prescribed diabetes medication (p<0.05). Furthermore, the study revealed that NLME exerted antidiabetic effects, particularly for T2DM, by promoting liver glycogen formation, enhancing insulin secretion control, facilitating glucose absorption by muscles, and restricting fat metabolism in the blood

Abstract

Kerbau lumpur (Bubalus bubalis) merupakan ternak yang memegang peranan dalam kehidupan ekonomi dan sosial masyarakat Kabupaten Sumba Timur. Salah satu penyakit yang hingga kini masih menjadi masalah kesehatan pada ternak, termasuk kerbau, adalah infeksi Trematoda. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi jenis cacing Trematoda yang menginfeksi serta mengukur prevalensi dan intensitas infeksinya. Metode filtrasi bertingkat digunakan untuk mendeteksi keberadaan Trematoda pada penelitian ini. Hasil pemeriksaan 105 sampel tinja kerbau asal Kabupaten Sumba Timur menunjukkan sebanyak 17/105 (16,19%) kerbau mengalami Trematodosis yang disebabkan oleh infeksi tunggal Fasciola gigantica (0,95%; rataan telur tiap gram tinja [TTGT] 1,00) dan Paramphistomum sp. (14,29%; rataan TTGT 2,26), serta infeksi campuran (koinfeksi) kedua Trematoda tersebut (0,95%; rataan TTGT 2,45). Prevalensi infeksi Trematoda kerbau betina (17,33%) ditemukan jauh lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan kerbau jantan (13,33%). Umur dan jenis kelamin diketahui tidak berasosiasi nyata (p > 0,05) dengan kejadian dalam penelitian ini. Intensitas infeksi Trematoda pada penelitian ini dikategorikan ringan, dengan rataan geometrik 2,18 TTGT. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa kerbau lumpur di Kabupaten Sumba Timur terinfeksi oleh cacing Trematoda, sehingga diperlukan upaya pengendalian untuk mencegah kerugian akibat infeksi tersebut.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui status birahi induk sapi potong melalui uji ferning, evaluasi profil sel epitel vagina, dan tampilan fisik vulva pada sapi potong. Penelitian ini menggunakan 11 ekor sapi potong yang dibagi dalam dua kelompok yaitu kelompok pertama 3 ekor untuk uji prosedur standar dan kelompok kedua 8 ekor untuk penilaian lapangan. Parameter yang digunakan dalam uji ferning adalah munculnya kristal mirip pakis dari air liur; metode usap vagina memberikan perbedaan sel yang ada dalam satu siklus estrus, dan tampilan fisik pada vulva berupa pembengkakan, kemerahan, dan lendir pada area vulva. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, bahwa sapi potong yang berahi menunjukkan bentuk kristal berupa pola seperti pakis pada uji ferning, pembengkakan dan kemerahan pada vulva, serta sel superfisial mendominasi pada profil sitologi vagina. Metode yang digunakan bersifat saling melengkapi dalam menilai status berahi pada sapi.

Abstract

Fedtugrow® is a complete feed containing depolarized katuk (Sauropus androgynous) leaves and is beneficial for enhancing the productivity of both dairy and beef cattle. Depolarization technology in katuk leaves involves the removal of polar compounds from the leaf to eliminate the potential side effects resulting from katuk consumption, such as bronchiolitis obliterans and inhibition of calcium absorption. This technology could eliminate side effects without compromising the efficacy of katuk leaves in increasing milk production and body weight gain. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Fedtugrow® in promoting the growth of beef cattle and its impact on the health status of the cattle raised on smallholder local farms with distinct characteristics compared to commercial farms. Ten Limousin male cattle entering the fattening phase were divided into a control group that consumed standard concentrate and a treatment group that consumed Fedtugrow® for three months. Blood was collected at the end of treatment for hematological analysis, including erythrocyte and leukocyte profiles. Cows consuming Fedtugrow® showed a significantly higher average daily gain and lower stress index than the control. Furthermore, no significant differences were observed in the hematological profile, such as total erythrocyte count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit, and total leukocytes. This study showed the ability of Fedtugrow® as a growth promoter without negatively affecting the physiological status of beef cattle raised on smallholder farms. Abstract

Patin (Pangasius hypophthalmus), a commercially important freshwater fish, is a rich source of protein containing both essential and non-essential amino acids, crucial for various biological functions. This study aimed to determine the amino acid composition of muscle tissue, oil, and bones of P. hypophthalmus and evaluate the wound healing potential of its oil extract in Rattus norvegicus. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography was employed to quantify the levels of essential and non-essential amino acids in each tissue. Results revealed that P. hypophthalmus oil exhibited the highest total amino acid content, particularly rich in histidine, arginine, and lysine. The wound healing activity of P. hypophthalmus oil extract was assessed in a rodent model, demonstrating a significant reduction in wound area (0.62-0.84 mm) and an impressive wound healing percentage (79-84.45%). These findings suggest that different parts of P. hypophthalmus possess valuable nutritional and therapeutic properties. Notably, the high amino acid content of P. hypophthalmus oil, particularly essential amino acids, highlights its potential as a promising source for developing pharmaceutical products, including amino acid supplements, wound healing agents, and formulations for metabolic support. Further research is warranted to fully explore the therapeutic potential of P. hypophthalmus oil and its bioactive components.

Abstract

Malnutrition is a major global health concern, especially in developing countries. Although patin fish oil and protein offer benefits, their individual and combined effects on maternal physiology remain unclear, particularly during early pregnancy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of patin-based nutritional intervention on total serum protein, albumin, hemoglobin levels, body weight during pregnancy, body weight during lactation, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, external appearance, behavioral activity, and milk production in malnourished rats. An in vivo study was conducted using Rattus norvegicus rats. The rats were divided into six groups: (1) healthy control, receiving standard feed; (2) malnourished control, receiving an 8% low-protein diet; (3) malnourished group, receiving standard feed; (4) malnourished treated with patin oil; (5) malnourished treated with patin meat; and (6) malnourished treated with a combination of patin oil and meat. The treatment consisted of 21 days during pregnancy and 23 days during lactation, for a total of 44 days. Our data indicated that patin-based intervention significantly increased total protein (p=0.044), albumin (p=0.001), and hemoglobin levels (p=0.034) compared to malnourished control group. The malnourished animals treated with patin oil showed the highest increases in total protein (1.67%), albumin (17.75%), and hemoglobin (24.26%). Body weight gain improved significantly in patin-treated group in both pregnancy (p=0.032) and lactation (p<0.001) compared to the malnourished control, with the highest gains observed in the patin oil group. Milk production also increased significantly (p<0.05), reaching its peak in the patin oil and meat combination group (6.97 g). Physiological parameters, including heart rate (p=0.021), respiratory rate (p=0.025), and body temperature (p=0.023), were significantly different among groups, of which patin oil and meat groups had the most optimal parameters compared to malnourished control group. In conclusion, patin-based nutritional intervention effectively enhances protein metabolism, hematological parameters, and physiological health in malnourished maternal rats, with patin oil demonstrating the most pronounced effects.

Abstract

Selama tujuh minggu, penelitian ini menyelidiki infeksi parasit intraeritrosit pada musang Jawa (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). Sampel darah dikumpulkan segera setelah musang dibawa dari habitat aslinya. Setelah periode adaptasi 30 hari, sampel tambahan dikumpulkan setiap minggu. Temuan kami mengungkapkan infeksi dengan Babesia sp., Theileria sp., dan Anaplasma sp., dengan tingkat infeksi tertinggi untuk Anaplasma sp. (0,35 ± 0,05)%, diikuti oleh Theileria sp. (0,12 ± 0,05)%, dan Babesia sp. (0,03 ± 0,02)%. Selama periode penelitian, tingkat infeksi Babesia sp. dan Anaplasma sp. menurun, sedangkan Theileria sp. menunjukkan tren peningkatan hingga akhir penelitian.
