Abstract

Human-crocodile conflict (HCC) is an important yet under-researched aspect of human-wildlife interactions in Indonesia with significant consequences for conservation efforts and public awareness. This study used a quantitative framing method with a content analysis approach based on 168 news articles published by detik.com in 2024 to examine how human-crocodile conflict was portrayed in this one of Indonesia's leading online media. Four variables were analyzed: news source, tone, frame type, and use of thematic versus episodic framing. The findings showed a strong reliance on government sources (79.16%), with insignificant representation of non-governmental perspectives. This resulted in narrow narrative coverage. News coverage was dominated by negative reporting, particularly in government-sourced stories (sentiment score: -0.50), perpetuating fear-based stereotypes about crocodiles. The most common frames were attribution of responsibility (34.0%) and human interest (30.1%), while thematic frames were rare (14.3%), indicating a preference for episodic and event-driven reporting over systemic analysis. These patterns suggest that the media on detik.com often reinforces sensationalism at the expense of balanced conservation messages. The study underscores the need for more inclusive, science-based reporting to foster coexistence and support effective conflict mitigation.

Abstract

Abstract

Management of conflict and negotiation played an important role in solving a dispute. Both actions were not simple tasks in resolving conflicts since different points of view usually involve. This was what happened in the dispute of animal welfare issue between Bandung Zoo and Scorpion Wildlife Foundation. The dispute that became the focus of this article related to the accusation raised by the Scorpion Wildlife Foundation towards the Bandung Zoo in terms of animal welfare abandonment. The conflict between the two organizations has increased because the zoo did not accept the allegations and intended to bring the foundation to a legal court for the reason of defamation. This article looked at the use of the management of conflict and the negotiation to resolve this conflict by the Agency of Natural Resources of West Java as facilitator. The study used constructive case study method to chronologically construct the conflict and the use of negotiation. The results showed that the facilitator dominated the negotiation process, while the conflicting parties have not had any agreement to resolve the problem. The condition had a potential to be invalid any time if the dispute was not completely resolved.

Abstract

The human-crocodile conflict frequently happens in Indonesia. Based on the data from http://www.crocodile-attack.info/, it is claimed that Indonesia is a country with the most cases of crocodile attacks. Mostly the attacks involved the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). On the other hand, this conflict is worsened by the spread of inaccurate information among communities. From October 2019 to October 2021, there were 12 false stories about crocodile attacks. These hoaxes were distributed on social media, causing fear to those who consumed the information. It is crucial to be investigated, especially from the perspective of environmental journalism. This study describes how mainstream media outlets tried to clarify the hoaxes. The results show many materials contained by information disorder, which need to be clarified by the media to ensure clarity and truth for the public. This study finds that most mainstream media still have their conscience to protect the public from false information. It was done by practicing curation journalism that includes the discipline of verification. In conclusion, the media and information sources need to have a good comprehension of crocodile behavior. The research also catches the need for environmental journalism training for media practitioners in Indonesia. Thus, the media will be able to offer the best solution for reducing the attack while at the same time giving adequate education for the public to live in harmony with Indonesian flora and fauna.

Abstract

Abstract

Cases of snakebite resulting casualties have been found almost all over the world. In Indonesia, thereis only a few official information about them. However, the fact shows that the number of fatalitiesin Indonesia is considerably high. Approximately, more than 100,000 snakebite victims per year havebeen reported. The sparse data is caused by the lack of serious attention from all parties, includingthe government. As a result, there are so much misinformation and confusion regarding the handlingof snakebites amongst communities, including physicians. Snakebite Accident Indonesia is the onlyinformational service about snake bites available on social media platforms. The service in a formatof the Facebook closed group is the source of information that referred the most by snakebitevictims. However, communication conflicts frequently happen because of the heterogeneous of thisgroup where the members came from a variety of backgrounds and understandings. Thisphenomenon becomes the main interest of this study because the conflicts have affected the crucialefforts to handle snake bites that hang the life of people on a thread. By implementing the case studymethod, this research raises the anatomy of the communication conflict. The results indicate theinvolvement of primordialism, socio-cultural, economic, and psychological problems within theconflict. To overcome this problem, a communication system, especially concerning health issues, isneeded to bridge the dispute. The need is crucial because the conflicts must be minimized to supportcontinuous efforts of educating people. Keywords: communication conflicts, snake bites, facebook, world health organization, healthcommunication

Abstract

Social media has transformed into a "free" advertising instrument. By using User-Generated Contents (UGC) technology, an instant publication about engaging activities in a particular area will encourage other people's interest to have the same experience. However, the effectiveness of tourism promotion turned out to have negative impacts, one of them is related to environmental issues because the behavior that has been published is not necessarily on the same track with the perspective of environmental conservation. It happened to Mount Kamojang and Papandayan nature reserve, West Java, where a part of the area has been converted into a nature tourism park. One reason for the change of status is to attract people's interest to visit the Kamojang and Papandayan areas. This interest could be seen from the many comments on social media that also promote the natural beauty of the place. By using a qualitative method with a case study approach, this study explains the dynamics involved in social media that influence the counter-productive behaviors in environmental issues. The results of the study show that social media contents have encouraged the public to access nature tourism areas, including the closed area in the Garut Regency. Additionally, the viral information was then used by stakeholders as a weapon to persuade the authorities to change the status of the area into a a tourist attraction. This study recommends a review of the policy related to the nature reserve's status amendment, considering the sustainability of environmental conservation in Indonesia. Abstract

Background: The 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election debate, broadcasted by several TV stations appointed by KPU, included a sign-language interpreter (Juru Bahasa Isyarat, JBI) box on screen. Yet, Deaf advocacy organization, Gerkatin, identified recurring accessibility flaws in the first broadcast. They matter because Article 28F of the 1945 Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to seek and obtain information, including the Deaf. Purpose: This research examines how Indonesia’s broadcasting and disability legislation addressed information accessibility for Deaf voters and asks why regulatory framework derived from existing legislation produced an inaccessible broadcast. Methods: A qualitative case study design triangulated three sources: (1) legislative document analysis of Act 32/2002 on Broadcasting, Act 19/2011 ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Act 8/2016 on Persons with Disabilities, and regulative document analysis of KPI’s Broadcasting Code of Conduct and Broadcast Program Standards (P3SPS), and Dewan Pers’ Guidelines for Disability Friendly Reporting; (2) semi-structured interviews with three informants from KPI, Dewan Pers, and Bawaslu; and (3) documentary evidence of Deaf voters’ experience drawn from Gerkatin’s formal complaint and Debate Broadcast archives from YouTube. Results: Indonesia’s existing legislation acknowledges Deaf persons’ rights of information accessibility, yet P3 SPS and Guidelines for Disability-Inclusive Reporting did not translate legislation’s mandate into enforceable broadcast specifications. Interview data further indicate that regulators had engaged only with JBI associations, not with organizations of Deaf persons such as Gerkatin, in developing broadcasting practice. Conclusion: Indonesia’s existing legislation acknowledges Deaf persons’ right to information accessibility in principle but existing regulation frameworks have not translated that recognition into enforceable technical standards for information accessibility in broadcasting. Implications: Closing this gap requires measurable standards for JBI visibility and multiplicity, mandatory subtitling for high-stakes information broadcasts, and a formal collaboration with Deaf organizations.
