Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder resulting from compression of the median nerve in the wrist, leading to symptoms such as pain, tingling, and weakness in the hands. Workers in the informal sector, particularly tailors, are at significant risk due to repetitive hand movements, prolonged static postures, and suboptimal ergonomic conditions. This study aims to analyze the occupational risk factors associated with CTS complaints among informal sector tailors in Cimahi City, focusing on age, smoking habits, and working hours. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 107 tailor respondents through purposive sampling and assessed via structured questionnaires. The findings revealed a statistically significant association between age and CTS complaints (p-value = 0.001), indicating that older workers are more susceptible to the disorder. However, no significant correlation was found between smoking habits and CTS complaints (p-value = 0.269). Conversely, a strong association was identified between working hours and CTS complaints (p-value = 0.001), suggesting that prolonged working time increases the risk of developing symptoms. This research contributes valuable insights into occupational health risk factors for tailors, emphasizing the need for improved workplace ergonomics and targeted preventive interventions.

Abstract

Hypertension is a leading non-communicable disease-causing mortality and reducing employee productivity. Its high prevalence in the workplace is linked to lifestyle factors and low awareness of prevention. This study aimed to analyze the effect of hypertension prevention programs on employee awareness and hypertension status in animal feed companies in Semarang. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups was employed. From a population of 257 employees, 30 samples were selected for each group. Data were collected via questionnaires and observation sheets. The intervention consisted of a hypertension prevention program including sosialisasi (socialization) about hypertension prevention and routine blood pressure monitoring. Data analysis used paired t-tests and Wilcoxon tests. Sixty subjects participated, with mean ages of 43.87 years (intervention) and 40.23 years (control). In the intervention group, 60% had a family history of hypertension. Significant improvement in awareness was observed in the intervention group (p = 0.000) but not in the control group (p = 0.493). The intervention significantly reduced systolic (p = 0.000) and diastolic (p = 0.012) blood pressure and lowered hypertension prevalence from 63.3% to 40%, whereas the control group showed no change. In conclusion, workplace hypertension prevention programs effectively increase employee awareness and reduce blood pressure and hypertension prevalence. These programs are recommended as preventive strategies in occupational health management.

Abstract

The batik industry within the informal sector, particularly in Jarum Village, Bayat District, Klaten Regency, presents a high risk of contact dermatitis complaints due to exposure to synthetic chemical dyes used in the coloring process. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with contact dermatitis complaints among informal batik workers, focusing on individual characteristics (age, gender, length of employment, duration of exposure, personal hygiene, and use of Personal Protective Equipment/PPE) and environmental factors (workplace temperature and humidity). A quantitative method with an analytical observational approach and cross-sectional design was employed. A total of 146 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. The results indicate that age, duration of chemical exposure, personal hygiene, and PPE use are significantly associated with contact dermatitis complaints. These findings underscore the importance of preventive interventions through adequate PPE provision, hygiene education, and community-based occupational health monitoring, particularly within the informal batik industry.

Abstract

This scoping review aims to invistigate safety promotion within academic laboratory environments, with a specific emphasis on culinary academic laboratories. The review aims to detect trends in literature, evaluate safety promotion approaches, and analyze their effects on participants' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP). The evaluation complied with PRISMA-ScR criteria, utilizing Scopus as the principal database, encompassing peer-reviewed articles published from 2014 to 2024. A total of 23 pertinent studies were included following the application of eligibility criteria. The research found twelve unique strategies of safety promotion, encompassing sustainable practices, ergonomic scheduling, health education, and community involvement. The results were classified into KAP outcomes, with several studies indicating enhanced safety knowledge, improved attitudes toward safety procedures, and favorable practical safety results. Notwithstanding the proliferation of literature on safety promotion, considerable deficiencies persist, especially with the distinct hazards present in culinary university laboratories. The evaluation determines that more research is necessary to fill these gaps and establish appropriate safety standards specific to culinary teaching environments.

Abstract

Astenopia is associated with close work, such as blurred vision, diplopia, dry eyes, and headaches. The incidence of asthenopia is quite common among workers who perform intensive visual tasks. The goal is to analyze the risk factors that are most related to astenopia complaints. This type of observational research with a cross sectional study design was conducted in July 2024 on 155 batik canters in 45 batik-making home industries in Jarum Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Variables were measured using a general questionnaire containing questions on age, length of service, length of work, and length of rest. In addition, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire is used to measure sleep quality. The worker's awkward posture was measured using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment Worksheet. And the distance to see the object is measured using the JOYKO brand 30cm Butterfly Iron Ruler between the object and the worker's eyes. The Visual Fatigue Index (VFI) questionnaire was used to measure astenopia complaints. The analysis of bivariate data with spearman rank and multivariate correlation was used multiple linear regression test. The results of this study showed that the majority of respondents were 44,368 years old on average, felt that their sleep quality was not good and had been working as a batik maker ≥ 10 years. And the risk factors most related to astenopia complaints are sleep quality (p=0.000), age (p=0.001), and working period (p=0.019).

Abstract

Musculoskeletal complaints are experienced by 1.71 billion people in the world, contributing to disability, pain and reducing work productivity. In Indonesia, the prevalence of MSDs is 11.9%, and the top position with 65.2% of cases was the garment sector. The garment sector generally applies a sitting posture, but at PT X all sewing operators work in a standing posture. Long-term standing poses a risk to health, muscles, skeleton and other body parts. To determine the effect of using anti-fatigue mats and stretching on MSDs complaints of sewing operators. Using a quasi-experiment by dividing the respondents into 4 groups. The total population is 156 sewing operators, and samples that meet the criteria are 112 people. Data analysis used paired T-test. There is no effect of stretching on the level of MSDs complaints (p-value = 0.745), there is no effect of using anti-fatigue mats on MSDs complaints (p-value = 0.326), and there is an effect of using anti-fatigue and stretching mats on MSDs complaints (p-value = 0.006). It is known that the combination of the use of anti-fatigue mats and stretching has an effect on MSDs complaints, the suggestion is all sewing operators can implement the program optimally and effectively every day.
