Abstract

Monitoring rice plant growth is crucial for evaluating rice field management and yield production. RGB images are generated from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) with RGB cameras. UAVs produce high spatial and temporal resolution, while RGB cameras are commonly used and cheap. The objectives of this study were to identify the spectral pattern of rice plant growth and to estimate yield production based on the spectral value of RGB images. The spectral pattern and yield estimation were analyzed using confidence interval (CI) and regression, respectively. Results show that spectral pattern during the vegetative until ripening stage forms a concave with minimum value in the generative stage and decreases towards the harvest stage. Based on the CI value, the high interval between upper and lower happened in the vegetative and ripening stages while the low interval happened in the generative stage. The high CI in the vegetative and ripening stages was due to the soil background and complexity of the rice plant canopy, respectively while the low CI in the generative stage was due to the homogeneous response of the leaf canopy. The best rice yield estimation based on the spectral value occurs in the ripening stage with an R2 of 0.84. Keywords: chlorophyll content, confidence interval, drone images, rice plant, regression

Abstract

The expansion of oil palm in Indonesia increasingly occurs at the expense of traditional perennial crops such as coffee, reshaping land systems and livelihoods. This study analyzed coffee to oil palm conversion in Way Kanan Regency, Lampung Province, from 2018 to 2024 through GIS-based classification, satellite imagery, and field validation. Results revealed a sharp decline in forest cover of around 63% during those periods and the dominance of agricultural lands (197,000 ha), driven primarily by oil palm expansion. Results showed that in Kasui, coffee agroforestry followed a boom and bust trajectory with a 59% increase, but was later displaced by oil palm, which surged by 52%. Results indicated that in Rebang Tangkas, coffee maintained a modest presence with a 36% increase, while oil palm expanded aggressively by 329%, underscoring its dominant role in reshaping land use dynamics. Conversion patterns were amplified by topography and accessibility, with oil palm concentrated in lowlands and coffee surviving in uplands. Institutional frameworks and economic incentives reinforced oil palm dominance, while rising coffee prices have triggered localized reconversion. These findings highlight a dual transition: oil palm consolidation in accessible lowlands and the persistence of coffee agroforestry in upland niches. The study underscores the urgency of place-based governance to reconcile economic drivers with ecological sustainability and rural livelihood resilience.

Abstract

Abstract

Despite its economic potential, Indonesia’s rapidly developing tourism hub faces socio-economic disparities. While tourism contributes significantly to local incomes, many communities still struggle with poverty, unequal access to resources, and environmental degradation. Labuan Bajo, located in West Manggarai Regency, depends heavily on tourism, fishing, and small-scale agriculture, yet faces challenges such as seasonal water scarcity, limited infrastructure, and land-use conflicts that threaten sustainable development. While some areas benefit from tourism-driven economic growth, others remain marginalized due to inadequate access to capital assets. The Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) provides a framework for understanding how local assets—human, social, natural, financial, and physical—shape livelihood outcomes. However, livelihoods are spatially heterogeneous and require localized analysis to inform targeted interventions. By integrating Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), this study aims to identify spatial disparities in livelihood sustainability and the key drivers of economic resilience in different areas of Labuan Bajo. The results provide spatially explicit evidence on livelihood assets and poverty clusters, supporting local governments and communities in designing targeted interventions for employment access, infrastructure provision, financial inclusion, and essential services.

Abstract

Soil moisture and the groundwater tables are important for the sustainable management and maintenance of tropical peatland ecosystems. This study examined the long-term impacts of fires and logging on groundwater tables and soil moisture in peatlands used for Acacia plantations. Four land conditions were compared: natural forest (FRS), unharvested Acacia plantations (UHV), post-harvest areas in 2016 (HV), and post-fire areas in 2015 (BAR). Observations were made during the rainy and dry seasons to determine how peat responded to rainfall. The soil conditions observed included groundwater levels measured by the gravimetric method and dipwells, and other soil properties such as bulk density, soil porosity, and water-filled pore space. The results showed that natural forest and unharvested Acacia sites experienced increased soil moisture content during the wet season and a shallower groundwater table than the burned area, which consistently recorded the lowest values. All sites experienced a dramatic decline in both groundwater table and soil moisture during the dry season. This decline was most severe in post-fire peatlands, where the groundwater table fell by more than 80 cm and soil moisture declined from 389% to 230% in some locations. Statistical tests confirmed that both burning and logging had a significant effect on the physical characteristics of peat and groundwater table (? = 0.05). This study shows that, after many years, burned and harvested peatlands continue to experience hydrological degradation and are unable to maintain stable groundwater tables and soil moisture.

Abstract

Protected areas are widely recognized as key instruments for biodiversity conservation and forest protection; however, the long-term ecological outcomes of institutional changes in protected area management remain insufficiently understood. This study evaluated land-cover dynamics in Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (TNGHS), Indonesia, following major institutional transformations associated with park expansion and boundary reclassification. Land-cover datasets for 2003, 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2024 obtained from the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry were analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), transition matrices, and intensity analysis. Land-cover transitions were decomposed into persistence, gains, losses, net change, and swap components to identify underlying landscape dynamics beyond conventional net-change assessments. The results revealed a positive long-term trajectory of forest recovery. Forest cover increased from 67,100 ha (76.5%) in 2003 to 73,078 ha (83.3%) in 2024, resulting in a net forest gain of approximately 5,978 ha. Secondary forest exhibited the largest expansion, largely through transitions from plantation forests and agricultural land. Transition analysis indicated that forest gains (9,113 ha) substantially exceeded forest losses (3,135 ha). However, a considerable swap component (6,270 ha) demonstrated that forest recovery and forest loss occurred simultaneously in different locations, indicating ongoing spatial redistribution of land-cover change within the park. These findings suggest that institutional reclassification and conservation-oriented management have contributed to forest recovery in TNGHS, supporting the Forest Transition Theory and evidence on protected area effectiveness. The study demonstrates that transition-based approaches provide a more comprehensive assessment of conservation outcomes than net-change statistics alone and underscores the importance of governance capacity, tenure certainty, and long-term monitoring in sustaining forest recovery within tropical protected areas

Abstract

Land use and land cover (LULC) change driven by human activities has become a major factor influencing environmental dynamics, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas. This study aims to analyze LULC changes in the Ciliwung Watershed, DKI Jakarta, during the period 2010–2025 and to project future trends up to 2030. The study utilizes Landsat imagery with a spatial resolution of 30 meters, combined with a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach and the Cellular Automata–Markov (CA-Markov) model. LULC classification was categorized into six classes, achieving an overall accuracy of 80% and a Kappa coefficient above 75%, indicating strong agreement. The results show a significant increase in built-up areas by 81.83% by 2030, accompanied by a decrease in open land by 18% and forest areas by 13.53%. Agricultural land and shrubland show slight increases of 1.57% and 0.82%, respectively, while water bodies remain relatively stable at 2.07%.  The expansion of built-up areas exerts considerable pressure on green spaces and reduces water infiltration capacity, thereby increasing the potential risk of flooding in the study area. These findings highlight the importance of implementing adaptive and sustainable spatial planning policies to control LULC changes and mitigate future environmental impacts.

Abstract

In recent years, a broad consensus has emerged that global hydroclimatic anomalies have increased rainfall variability in tropical cities. Addressing this, we simulated and predicted rainfall patterns in Jakarta’s Ciliwung River Basin using a hierarchical framework that integrates Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) time series modeling with GIS spatial interpolation. Monthly rainfall records from three stations, Kemayoran (1990–2020), Halim (1990–2018), and Tanjung Priok (1990–2015), were analyzed. Following Ljung-Box and residual tests, the SARIMA (0,1,1)(0,1,1)₁₂ model was selected. Accuracy verification yielded Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values below 10% for all stations: 8.4% (Kemayoran), 7.9% (Halim), and 8.1% (Tanjung Priok). Core predictions indicate that by 2030, rainfall intensity will continue declining across all stations, while seasonal rainfall rhythms remain stable. Spatial rainfall pattern comparison between 2025 and 2030 reveals a northward shift of the high rainfall concentration zone. This study has two limitations: only three sample stations were used, and no formal uncertainty quantification was performed for spatial predictions, making the reliability of spatial patterns weaker than suggested by visualizations. Despite these constraints, the proposed statistical-spatial modeling approach supports flood preparedness and adaptive water resource management in data-constrained urban watersheds, provided users account for the stated methodological limitations.
