Abstract

Problem solving is a process that requires logical thinking to find solutions to the problems faced. Through this process, students will learn to develop appropriate strategies to solve the problems. This study aims to identify errors made by students in solving problems on the material of function derivatives. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques carried out through previous literature reviews. The results of the study showed that students made mistakes at several stages, namely in understanding the problem, designing a solution strategy, implementing the solution, and at the re-checking stage. Based on the type of error, students made mistakes in terms of facts, concepts, principles, and operations. The proposed solution is to accustom students to be more careful in solving problems based on problem-solving steps, especially at the final checking stage, and to improve their mastery of algebraic operations and basic factoring techniques. Abstract

Mathematical literacy is a person's ability to formulate, apply and interpret mathematics in various contexts, including the ability to reason systematically and use concepts, procedures, and facts to describe, explain or predict an event. Therefore, mathematical literacy is essential in everyday life. This article analyzed the mathematical literacy of junior high school students in Bandar Lampung. Data were collected by giving mathematical literacy questions to junior high school students. The data were analyzed descriptive–quantitatively. The research population is 14–15 years junior high school students in Bandar Lampung City. The research sample was selected using a stratified sampling technique to get students from several favorable and unfavorable public and private junior high schools. The research instrument was a test on the mathematical literacy of junior high school students. The results showed that junior high school students in Bandar Lampung were generally able to solve mathematical literacy problems whose information was clearly available, solve problems procedurally, and use basic algorithms, formulas, procedures, or conventions involving integers. However, they have yet to solve problems that involve constraints or make assumptions. They have not been able to select and integrate different representations, including symbolic ones, relate them directly to aspects of real–world situations and have not been able to solve problems related to everyday life that they rarely encounter.

Abstract

The ability of mathematical representation helps students solve mathematical problems in forms that are easy to understand and more concrete, so that they can maximize their potential for achievement in learning mathematics. The purpose of this study was to describe the mathematical representation abilities of junior high school students on the concept of congruence in terms of learning styles. The subjects of this study were 35 grade VIII junior high school students using a random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using mathematical representation ability tests, learning style questionnaires, and interviews. After that, it was analyzed using triangulation techniques to determine the validity of the data. The results showed that on average, students have very good visual representation abilities with auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles because all students can solve questions correctly according to the indicators. Students who have the ability to represent good expressions or equations have a visual learning style. Whereas students with word representation abilities cannot be said to be good because of the existing subjects, there are no students with any learning style who can solve word representation ability questions correctly. Based on this, it can be concluded that the low representation ability of students is not influenced by their learning styles, both visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, especially in the concept of congruence.
