Abstract

Mathematical thinking involves how individuals present, understand, and critically examine mathematical truths, considering how their relation to representation or imagination. However, students often exhibit low mathematical thinking skills. Previous research shows that digital worksheets based on creative problem-solving can foster these skills, yet the relationship between mathematical thinking and learning styles remains unexplored. This study aims to develop innovative digital worksheets based on creative problem solving, categorized as valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students' mathematical thinking with audio-visual learning styles. The study employs a development method comprising two main stages: a preliminary study (analysis and design) and a formative study (evaluation and revision). Data collection instruments include tests, observations, validation sheets, questionnaires, and interviews. The analysis integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study involved 15 audio-visual learners from 24 eighth-grade students at SMP Srijaya Negara Palembang. The results indicate that students excel in specializing and identifying problems based on given information. Their generalizing skills, including finding patterns and relationships are strong. However, their conjecturing and convincing skills require improvement, particularly in making connections and reasoning. The digital worksheets were deemed 93% valid and practical, significantly enhancing students' mathematical thinking, particularly for those with an audio-visual learning style. While students demonstrated excellent skills in specialization and good skills in generalization, there is still a need for improvement in conjecturing and convincing due to errors in mathematical reasoning.

Abstract

This research aims to produce STEM-based 2D shapes learning trajectories in the context of parachuting to support students’ flexibility ability. The method chosen was design research type validation studies consisting of three stages: preparation for experiment, design experiment, and retrospective analysis conducted for two cycles. The research subjects were 7th grade junior high school students selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, written tests, and interviews, then analyzed qualitatively and presented in text narratives. The result of this study is a learning trajectory consisting of three activities, namely 1) making three square-shaped canopy designs with different sizes and the same suspension rope length, 2) making three square-shaped canopy designs with the same size and different suspension rope lengths, and 3) making three canopy designs in the form of different quadrilateral with the same canopy area and suspension rope length. The learning trajectory developed is able to support students' flexibility ability where in the learning process students are directed to realize the existence of alternative strategy choices or varied solutions, utilize various knowledge possessed, determine the most effective and efficient way or strategy, and believe in the truth of the answers used in solving problems.

Abstract

The emergence of this research is caused by the low mathematical literacy of students in Indonesia. This study aims to obtain valid, practical, and have potential effects of PISA type questions and activities using social distancing context during pandemic. This study is design research with the type of development studies which consist of two main stages, including preliminary design and formative evaluation. This study took a special research subject for grade IX junior high school students aged 14-16 years in the city of Palembang. Analysis of the results of this study was carried out qualitatively based on data in the field obtained in the form of interviews, photos and videos to see student activities in working on questions and activities. From this study, the results obtained include one type of activity and one evaluation question of the results of developing PISA type questions and activities with the context of social distancing during a pandemic that grade IX students can use to develop their mathematics literacy skills. In conclusion, PISA type questions and activities with the context of social distancing during the pandemic can be used for the learning process in the classroom to improve students' mathematical literacy. Abstract

This study aims to produce valid and practical questions and discover the potential effect of PISA-Like Math Tasks on uncertainty and data content using the COVID-19 context on mathematical literacy skills. The subjects of this study were students in Grade 9 of Junior High School number 19 Palembang. The research was conducted using the research design of developmental research. The stages in question development research are the preliminary and formative evaluation stages. The preliminary stage includes analysis of student needs, curriculum analysis, and analysis of PISA evaluation instruments. The formative evaluation stage includes self-evaluation, expert reviews, and one-to-one, small group, and field tests. This study resulted in a set of PISA-Like Math Tasks on uncertainty and data content using the COVID-19 context which consisted of 7 units with 12 valid and practical questions and potential effects on mathematical literacy skills, which included communication skills, reasoning skills, mathematical abilities, representation ability, and strategy selection ability. The resulting PISA-Like Math Tasks can help students think mathematically by using ideas from different subjects to solve a given problem.DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.3.17086.269-288

Abstract

This development research aims to produce PISA-like mathematics problems with quantity content using a valid and practical COVID-19 context and to investigate the potential effect of these problems on mathematical literacy skills. This research employed a development research design with two stages: preliminary and formative evaluations. This study also employed the Lesson Study Learning Community (LSLC) system in the process of development and implementation. This study involved eighth-grade students aged 13-15 years at SMP Negeri 19 Palembang. The data were collected using walk-through, document, observation, interview, and test techniques. This study produced 6 units and 12 items of PISA-like mathematics problems with several content characteristics of the COVID-19 context, including working, personal, and social contexts and levels that agree with the 2018 PISA framework; and competence processes, such as mathematical literacy skills and standardized linguistic skills that can be applied and interpreted by students. To conclude, the developed PISA-like mathematics problems are valid and practical and potentially affect mathematical literacy skills and learning to confront life skills during the COVID-19 pandemic.DOI : https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.2.17055.141-156

Abstract

The article describes about validation of teaching material in which some probing-prompting questions were created to construct students’ understanding about function of two variables. This research is a design research and its type is development study. Data was collected by walk-through and documentation methods. The research produced the structure of questions to construct students’ understanding about some topics which are domain, range, contour plot or contour maps, surface, and level of curve of function of two variables, and the teaching material is supplemented by Geogebra application. The questions about topics of domain and range material are probed by topics of domain and range of function of one variable. The teaching material is valid.
