Abstract

Mathematical representation is one of the mathematical higher order thinking skills, as a tool or way of thinking in communicating mathematical ideas. Referring to a research about the inconsistency of a mathematical communication profile involving gender differences and the phenomenon of more female students than men right now, there appears to be an allegation that there is a connection between gender differences and students mathematical representation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the improvement of students' mathematical representation capability in terms of gender differences. Subjects in this research were students of class X of High School in Medan, Indonesia, consisting of 13 men and 19 women. The research instrument is a mathematical representation test consisting of 4 questions. Data analysis to find out how the category of improvement of students mathematical representation, using index of N-gain. The results of the research are: (1) the improvement of mathematical representation ability in the lower and middle categories of male students is higher than female students, (2) there is no male students have high category mathematical representation, but there are female students have high category mathematical representation abilities, and (3) the ability of representation to make mathematical models and explain the verbal language of male students is higher than female students. While the representational ability of making tables and drawing female students is higher than male students. The implication of the research is needs to do deeper research to see the relationship of mathematical representation ability with the students' mathematical ability profile.

Abstract

Abstract. This class room action research aimed to improve students' mathematical creativity in mathematical problem solving, and described the learning process of students of SMP Negeri 5 Terbuka. The learning method used module learning cycle models. This research was conducted in two cycles included the steps of planning, implementation of action, observation, and reflection. Students' mathematical creativity in solving mathematical problems measured was fluency, flexibility, elaboration, and originality. The results showed that students' mathematical creativity in mathematical problem solving increased. The aspects of the students' mathematical creativity in mathematical problem solving that most increased in this study were elaboration.Keywords: mathematical creativity, solving mathematical problems, module learning cycle models

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze undergraduate students’ mathematical creative thinking abilities (MCTA). This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the research subjects being Mathematics Education Study Program students. Tests and interviews were the instruments used for mathematical creative thinking ability. The results of the research show that students' mathematical creative thinking abilities vary, as many as 20% are in the low category (CCTA < 33%), 60% are in the medium category (CCTA between 33% and 67%) and 20% are in the high category (CCTA > 67 %). Understanding mathematical concepts, learning experiences, and motivation all have an impact on students creative mathematical thinking skills. It is hoped that the results of this research can be considered when designing learning that can develop students' mathematical creative thinking abilities.  Keywords: analyze, mathematical creative thinking abilities, undergraduate students’

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is a very important, but in fact, this ability is still relatively low. This study aims to analyze the indicators of mathematical problem-solving ability, identify learning objectives developed to improve problem-solving ability, and examine the types of student errors in solving mathematical problems. The methodology used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA guide.. Data collection techniques were carried out through searching and documenting scientific articles using the Publish or Perish application together with the Google Scholar database from 2016 to 2025. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques and bibliometric analysis through inclusion and exclusion criteria to map research trends, ability indicators, learning objectives and student errors in mathematical problem solving. Of the 147 articles identified, 28 articles met the inclusion criteria for analysis. The results of the study show that the most dominant Polya indicator is used, namely 71.4%, the learning objectives emphasize conceptual mastery and the development of high-level thinking skills, while the most frequent student errors occur in the re-examination phase (58-75%) which indicates low student metacognition. This review provides an overview of research trends in mathematical problem-solving abilities over the past 10 years and provides practical recommendations for the development of holistic and integrative mathematics learning

Abstract

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to develop culture-responsive mathematics e-learning by integrating the Sikambang Pesisir Barus tradition into the WordPress platform, creating learning that is contextual, meaningful, and relevant to students' cultural backgrounds.Methodology - This research methodology uses a development research (R&D) design with the Plomp model. The research subjects were students/teachers from MTSN 1 and SMP Muhammadiyah 28 Barus, class VII-A, with 24 and 30 students, respectively. The research procedures include the stages of needs analysis, product design and development, expert validation, limited and field trials, and revisions until a valid, practical, and effective product is obtained. The intervention was carried out through the implementation of learning activities on a WordPress-based e-learning platform containing material on quadrilaterals and triangles. The research instruments included expert validation sheets, implementation observation sheets, student response questionnaires, and mathematical literacy ability tests. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and inferentially through tests of validity, practicality, and effectiveness, including n-gain calculations and analyses of learning completeness and student responses.Findings - The results show that a WordPress-based mathematics e-learning integrated with the Sikambang culture meets the criteria for validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The developed media was considered feasible by experts, easy to use in learning, and received positive responses from students. In addition, students' mathematical literacy improved. It can be concluded that integrating local culture into e-learning can make learning more meaningful and engaging.Contribution- These implications and contributions position WordPress as a viable alternative for driving innovative, contextually relevant learning experiences.

Abstract

Mathematical communication ability is an essential competency in mathematics learning because it enables students to express mathematical ideas, use representations, and explain solution procedures systematically. However, many students still experience difficulties in communicating mathematical ideas due to teacher-centered learning and limited interactive activities. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Wordwall-integrated mathematics learning on students’ mathematical communication ability. This study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The population consisted of seventh-grade students at Yasiriyah Private Junior High School Medan, with a sample of 50 students divided into an experimental class and a control class, each consisting of 25 students. The research instrument was an essay test based on indicators of mathematical communication ability. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain analysis, normality and homogeneity tests, and an independent sample t-test. The results showed that the experimental class achieved a higher improvement than the control class, with a mean N-Gain score of 0.74 in the high category, while the control class obtained 0.39 in the moderate category. The independent sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two classes. Improvements were found in all indicators, with the highest improvement in explaining solution procedures systematically. These findings indicate that Wordwall-integrated mathematics learning is effective in improving students’ mathematical communication ability and can support more interactive and student-centered learning.

Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are essential in enabling students to express mathematical ideas through symbols, models, and visual representations. However, many Indonesian students still experience difficulties, particularly when solving story-based problems. This study aimed to analyse students’ mathematical communication skills in solving linear programming story problems using the Symbolab application. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design involving 32 tenth-grade students at Madrasah Aliyah Swasta Plus Al Ulum Medan. Data were collected through five story problems and follow-up interviews with selected students representing each ability level. The result showed that 37,5% of students were in the low category, 37,5% in the medium category, and 25% in the high category of mathematical communication skills. Most students had difficulty translating story problems into mathematical models, which led to errors in graph construction, shading region determination, and final computations. Although the Symbolab application helped students visualise graphs and follow solution steps, students still had to construct mathematical models from the problems independently. These findings suggest that while the Symbolab application can support visualisation and solution steps, explicit instruction and practice in translating word problems into mathematical models remain crucial for developing students’ mathematical communication skills.

Abstract

Problem-based learning is one instructional model that can be integrated with the Desmos application to enhance students’ mathematical abilities. This study aimed to examine the effect of problem-based learning assisted by the Desmos application on students’ mathematical abilities in the topic of quadratic functions. The research employed a quantitative approach using an experimental method involving 32 tenth-grade students. The research instrument consisted of a test in the form of a pretest and a posttest. After obtaining the pretest and posttest data, data analysis was conducted using a t-test. The results indicated a difference in students’ scores before and after the implementation of problem-based learning on quadratic function material using the Desmos application. These findings suggest that problem-based learning integrated with technological tools is effective in improving students’ mathematical abilities.

Abstract

Numeracy literacy is a fundamental competency assessed through Indonesia’s Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM); however, Grade VII junior high school students’ achievement in this domain continues to exhibit significant gaps, particularly in solving contextual problems with extended narrative structures. Although numeracy literacy research in Indonesia has grown considerably, studies that simultaneously examine students’ profiles across differentiated ability levels while foregrounding the linguistic dimension as the primary explanatory variable remain scarce—especially in the local context of Stabat. To address this gap, this study investigated the numeracy literacy profile of Grade VII students at a junior high school in Stabat across three levels of mathematical ability: high, medium, and low. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Instruments consisted of a contextual numeracy literacy test and a semi-structured interview guide. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Findings indicate that 60% of students fall within the medium ability level. More critically, the primary barrier originates from linguistic demands rather than procedural weaknesses: students demonstrate decreased accuracy when confronted with word problems exceeding three sentences, and the capacity for decoding—translating verbal context into a mathematical model—remains underdeveloped across all ability levels. The principal contribution of this study is establishing that linguistic load, not computational deficiency, is the decisive differentiating factor in numeracy literacy performance, with direct pedagogical implications: strengthening numeracy literacy cannot be decoupled from simultaneously developing students’ reading stamina and mathematical reading strategies.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the finding that students’ self-efficacy at MTsS Hifzhil Qur’an was relatively low. Further investigation revealed that this issue was associated with the teaching methods employed by the teachers. Therefore, implementing innovative instructional strategies is necessary to enhance students’ self-efficacy. Among various instructional approaches, the Snowball Throwing method is considered a promising strategy for addressing this issue. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine whether the Snowball Throwing method has a significant effect on students’ self-efficacy. This study employed an experimental design involving 60 seventh-grade students, comprising one experimental class and one control class. The research instrument was a student self-efficacy questionnaire developed based on established self-efficacy indicators. The collected data were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test, which yielded a p-value of 0.005. Since this value was lower than the significance level of 0.05, the findings indicate that the Snowball Throwing method had a significant positive effect on students’ self-efficacy. Therefore, this method may be considered an effective instructional approach for improving students’ self-efficacy.
