Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore a relationship between applied mathematics and a culture called ethnomathematics. The culture that will be used as the research topic is the performance culture of the Offering Dance (Makan Sirih) from the Deli Malay ethnic group in North Sumatra. This study is a research that uses descriptive qualitative research methods using an ethnographic approach that analyzes and describes a local culture based on facts obtained in the field. From the results of this research, it is revealed that, in the performance of the Offering Dance (Makan Sirih) in the Malay ethnic Deli of North Sumatra, there are various applications of mathematical concepts such as the concept of sets, counting, functions, and flat shapes. This can lead to new breakthroughs that underlie the formation of new mathematics learning designs for educational institutions. Along with this, this research also aims to improve the public's view of mathematics, that mathematics is a science that also has connections with all forms of activities in daily life.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the cultural links in a local area with mathematical concepts or commonly known as ethnomathematics. This ethnomathematical research raises the topic of discussion about a "Nasi Face-to-face" procession at weddings in the traditional Malay culture of Batubara, North Sumatra. This research will explore what mathematical aspects are contained in a regional culture of the Batubara Malay tribe, especially the “Nasi Face-to-face” procession. Descriptive qualitative research method with ethnographic approach is used in this study. The results showed that in the procession of "Nasi Facing-front" found various mathematical concepts related, namely sets, functions, geometry of flat shapes, and geometry of geometric shapes. With this research, it is hoped that it can be used as a unique medium for learning mathematics as well as getting to know the local culture that is applied in learning mathematics in schools.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan memvariasikan pembelajaran dengan menghubungkan matematika dan budaya yang disebut sebagai etnomatematika. Penelitian berfokus pada salah satu benda dari prosesi adat istiadat yaitu Balai pada pernikahan Melayu di Sumatera Utara.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan secara etnografi yang menganalisa dan menggambarkan sebuah budaya setempat berdasarkan fakta yang didapatkan di lapangan. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa pada Balai adat Melayu terdapat berbagai terapan dari konsep ilmu matematika seperti; (1) mengukur kayu untuk membentuk balai, (2) merancang bangun yang sesuai dilakukan dengan menyusun setiap tingkatan balai, (3) konsep himpunan yang terbukti bahwa terdapat beberapa variasi isian balai sesuai dengan selera pihak yang berhajatan, dan (4) kajian konsep geometri terdapat pada bagian balai dan ornamen pendukung balai yang erat hubungannya dengan bentuk-bentuk geometri.

Abstract

The purposes of the research were to determine: (1) the difference of improvement of students’ mathematical creative thingking ability (2) the difference of improvement of students’ self regulated learning, taught by open-ended based brain-gym and expository learning, (3) the interaction between learning method and students’ gender toward mathematics in increasing student’s mathematical creative thingking ability, and (4) the process of students’ answer in each learning. This research was quasi experimental research. The population of the research was all of the students at 7thgrade of Ar-Rahman Junior High School. The sample taken randomly, such as 7th-A (experiment class) and 7th-B (control class). The instruments of research were: (1) mathematical creative thinking ability test, and (2) self regulated learning scale. The result of trials to test mathematical creative thinking test are derived validity row by 0,640; 0,698; 0,709; 0,721; and 0,605 with a reliability test by 0,692. Data analysis was done using ANACOVA and ANAVA two ways formula. The results showed that (1) the improvement of mathematical creative thinking ability and self regulated learning students who received open-ended based brain-gym higher than students who received expository learning. (2) therewas no interaction between learning method and students’ gender toward mathematics in improvement student’s mathematical creative thingking ability, this is shown with significance value of 0.499 was greater than the significance level  = 0.05. (3) the process of answers of students who received open-ended learning-based brain-gym better than students who received expository. From this research, the researchers suggest to make good planning, attention to the characteristics of the students, efficient use of time, and for further research to be better explore further the others  capabilities.

Abstract

Dalam kelas pembelajaran matematika terlihat siswa bersikap pasif dan apabila diberi tugas siswa tidak berusaha menyelesaikan soal matematika tetapi menyalin hasil kerja temannya. Hal ini menunjukkan rendahnya kepercayaan diri matematis siswa. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui peningkatan kepercayaan diri matematis siswa setelah diterapkannya pembelajaran berbasis masalah dan melihat interaksi antara gender dan pembelajaran terhadap peningkatan kepercayaan diri matematis siswa. Jenis penelitian ini eksperimen semu dengan sampel penelitian ada dua kelompok yaitu kelompok siswa kelas VIII-5 sebanyak 36 siswa (22 laki-laki dan 14 perempuan) dan kelompok siswa kelas VIII-6 sebanyak 37 siswa (22 laki-laki dan 15 perempuan). Data diperoleh dengan penyebaran skala kepercayaan diri terhadap seluruh sampel penelitian, dilanjutkan dengan analisis data dengan anava dua jalur. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa (1) Siswa yang memperoleh pembelajaran berbasis masalah lebih tinggi peningkatan kepercayaan diri matematisnya daripada siswa yang memperoleh pembelajaran konvensional (2) tidak terdapat interaksi antara gender dengan pembelajaran terhadap peningkatan kepercayaan diri matematis siswa.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi keterkaitan suatu budaya setempat dengan terapan konsep matematika yang dikenal sebagai etnomatematika. Objek yang difokuskan pada penelitian ini adalah kain songket tenun Langkat, yang mana objek ini merupakan bagian dari benda peninggalan khas Melayu Langkat Sumatera Utara. Kualitatif deskriptif merupakan metode yang dipakai dengan menggunakan pendekatan etnografi yang dikaitkan secara etnomatematika, yang menganalisa keterhubungan konsep matematika dengan budaya setempat. Hasil dari pelaksanaan ini mengungkapkan bahwa di dalam budaya kain songket tenun Melayu Langkat terdapat keterkaitan konsep matematika yaitu konsep himpunan dan transformasi geometris. Diharapkan dengan adanya penelitian ini dapat dijadikan sebagai bahan rujukan inspirasi agar pendidik mau menggunakan pendekatan etnomatematika sebagai gaya belajar yang dapat meningkatkan ketertarikan dalam belajar matematika.

Abstract

Factors that affect students' mathematics learning outcomes include the lack of student interest in mathematics. Learning that does not have meaning and the teacher's teaching methods are still less diverse, causing a lack of student interest in learning mathematics. One of the meaningful learning is when students can make their own notes from their understanding while studying. This study aims to determine the differences in mathematics learning outcomes of students who are taught using the mind map method and students who are taught with the concept map method. This research was conducted at a private senior high school in Medan. This type of research is a quasi-experimental research design using randomize pretest-posttest control group design. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling by taking two experimental classes in class X high school. The instrument used to determine student learning outcomes on exponent material is a test in the form of an objective test of 15 items that have been declared valid and reliable. The results showed that the average student learning outcomes taught using the mind map method were higher than those taught with the concept map. From the results of this study teachers are expected to use the mind map method to improve student mathematics learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal and implement mathematics learning with community activities. This research focuses on the production process of charcoal handicrafts derived from coconut shells by communities in Kampung Kolam, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. This research uses qualitative research methods with an ethnographic approach. The method of data collection in this study is by observation, interviews, and documentation. This research instrument is the researcher himself who is supported by observation sheets, interview sheets, stationery, and documentation tools. Data analysis techniques used in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. While the data validity technique in this study uses triangulation techniques, namely by comparing data based on observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that there is a mathematical concept in the coconut shell charcoal production process, namely build a curved side space contained in a hollow hemispherical coconut shell and a tubular kiln used, build a flat side space contained in the block-shaped kiln used, a comparison of the value and reverse value contained in time and the number of coconut shells used.

Abstract

One area of mathematics that requires a good understanding and depiction of abstract concepts is geometry. Therefore it is necessary to apply realistic learning. One type of realistic learning is ethnomathematics. Ethnomathematics is a bridge between mathematics and culture by linking culture and students' everyday experiences. Traditional crafts that can be lifted are creations from coconut leaves (janur) which can be formed into various kinds of craft creations that contain geometric shapes. The type of research used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection was used through literature and interviews. The results of the research show that creations from coconut leaves (janur) can be geometric shapes that can be used as ethnomathematics objects. These forms include (1) coins that can be made into hexagons, (2) kerises that have elements of equilateral triangles, right triangles, and parallelograms, (3) diamond bricks that have elements of square geometry lengths and blocks, (4) balls (balans) which have square and cube geometry elements, (5) sinta diamonds which have rhombus geometry elements and rhombus upright prisms. Other geometric elements contained in the janur creations are congruence, angles, and symmetry. Keywords: ethnomathematics, geometry, coconut leaves.

Abstract

Etnomatematika merupakan pengajaran matematika yang berkaitan dengan budaya. Satu diantaranya yaitu jajanan tradisional Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan etnomatematika dan mengidentifikasi konsep matematika pada jajanan tradisional yaitu kue terang bulan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data untuk mengolah data dalam penelitian adalah reduksi data, penyajian data, dan menarik kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat konsep matematika pada bentuk jajanan tradisional kue terang bulan yaitu tabung, perbandingan, waktu, lingkaran, pecahan, dan sudut.Kata kunci: Etnomatematika, kue terang bulan
