Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of Black soldier fly (BSF) larva extract. The BSF larva was extracted using methanol and then tested for antibacterial activity using agar diffusion method (zone growth inhibition). The antibacterial activity was conducted against Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli, two important bacterial strains in poultry, using six dilution levels (10 mg/ml, 20 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml, 80 mg/ml, 160 mg/ml and 320 mg/ml). All the results were subjected analyze using t-test method. Based on the diameter of the inhibition zone, the BSF larva extract has a strong (P<0.05) antibacterial activity against Salmonella sp. and E. coli when the concentration used 320 mg/ml. In addition, BSF larva extract also contain high amount of lauric acid (49.18%), a saturated fatty acid that has been proven to proposes as antibacterial agent. Therefore, it could be concluded that the BSF larva extract could be used as a candidate for antibacterial substances.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate protein quality of top leaf meal of Indigofera zollingerina based on its net protein utilization (NPU) as well as to evaluate its metabolizable energy. Fifty broiler chicks were used in determination of NPU while fifteen broiler strain Cobbs chickens aged 5 weeks were used for metabolizable energy measurement. This study used descriptive method in which data obtained were analyzed and compared to NPU and metabolizable energy of soybean meal. The results showed that top leaf meal of Indigoferazollingerinahad NPU of 38.58 – 46.98, which is 70.14% - 85-42% of that of soybean meal (55). Its metabolizable energy was 2791.12 kcal/kg and was 9.46% higher than that of soybean meal. As the NPU and metabolizable energy were close to those of soybean meal, top leaf meal of Indigoferazollingerinacan be used to substitute protein from soybean meal in poultry feed.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the chemical composition of Garut lamb fed with bean sprout waste along with different feeding time. The subjects of this      research were 12 Garut sheep aged 6 to 7 months with the initial weight at 16.76 ± 2.09 kg (co-efficient of variation = 12.47%). Both of the given feed were consisted of 14% isopro-tein and 65% iso-total digestible nutrients (iso-TDN), which divided into R1 (40% for-age + 60% concentrate 1) and R2 (40% bean sprout waste + 60% concentrate 2). The research was conducted in a completely randomized design with 2x2 factorial and rep-licated 3 times. The first factor was two feed types (R1 and R2), while the      second factor was the feeding time (morning and afternoon). The obtained chemical composi-tion data of lamb were then analyzed with ANOVA. The results showed that the chem-ical composition of Garut lamb fed with bean sprout waste was similar to the lamb fed with forage. Moreover, the different feeding time did not show significant   differences as well (P>0.05), and there was no interaction between type of feed with feeding time to the chemical composition of Garut meat. The water, fat, protein, and ash content of Garut lamb fed with bean sprout waste were 77.09 ± 2.07%; 1.60 ± 0.69%; 16.66 ± 0.38%; and 0.42 ± 0.41%, while fed with forage were 73.25 ± 1.66%; 3.27 ± 2.02%; 17.68 ± 1.82%; and 0.48 ± 0.20%, respectively.

Abstract

Black Soldier Fly larvae are natural antibiotics. The use of methanol extract in BSF larvae has a dual function, namely high protein content and high antibiotic content to kill Gram-negative bacteria. The biological structure of BSF larvae with antimicrobial peptide (AMP) acts as an inhibitor of pathogenic microorganisms, has a high lauric acid function as a natural antimicrobial and chitin, the polysaccharide plays a role in enhancing the immune response of the animal. This study aims to gain the best type of BSF protein from feed treatments containing live BSF, dry BSF, and BSF extract to increase blood productivity and hematology. The results of this study show that the best P3 treatment for the productivity of laying hens at the age of 18 to 26 weeks with the use of BSF extract since it contains the highest protein compared to other treatments. Productivity variables show the best P3 treatment, each egg weight 57.17 g bird-1, daily egg production 90.88%, egg mass 2408.16 g bird-1 and ration conversion 2.0. The mean hematology of the blood showed the highest P3 treatment, each erythrocyte 2.91±0.13 x 106 mm-3, leucocytes 17.69±3.68 x 103 mm-3, hematocrit 27.8±1.14%, hemoglobin 9.96±1.12%, MCV 95.77±4.41 fl, MCHC 35.99±5.21%, MCH 34.38±4.53 pg, lymphocytes 61.2 ± 4.86%, heterophile 31.2±2%, monocytes 5±0.62% and ratio H/L 0.51±0.04.

Abstract

Kualitas warna ikan klown hasil budidaya lebih rendah dibandingkan tangkapan alam, hal ini dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor, namun belum ada data ilmiah sebagai dasar untuk melakukan perbaikan. Tujuan penelitian adalah menganalisis dan mengevaluasi kualitas warna ikan klown (Amphiprion percula) hasil tangkapan alam dibandingkan dengan hasil budidaya. Kualitas warna diukur pada dua zona: zona-I kulit berwarna oranye antara insang dengan band warna putih pada tengah badan dan zona-II adalah bagian kulit warna oranye antara band putih tengah badan dengan band warna putih pada pangkal ekor, dengan parameter nilai L* (lightness), a* (redness), b* (yellowness), C (chroma), H (Hue). Analisis total karotenoid (TC) dilakukan pada kulit kedua zona, sirip pektoral, sirip dorsal, sirip kaudal, dan serum darah. Analisis kromatografi lapis tipis (KLT) dilakukan pada kulit dan sirip untuk mengonfirmasi jenis karotenoid dalam kulit dan sirip. Data kualitas warna dianalisis menggunakan t-test, hubungan kualitas warna dengan TC dianalisis dengan regresi sederhana, dan analisis deskriptif untuk hasil KLT. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas warna ikan klown tangkapan alam lebih baik dibanding budidaya, didukung oleh tingginya total karotenoid pada kulit zona-I, kulit zona-II, sirip pektoral, sirip dorsal, sirip kaudal, dan serum darah berturut-turut 51,64; 51,24; 136,40; 124,37; 194,18 mg/kg; dan 2,2 mg/mL; pada ikan hasil budidaya berurut-turut 2,5; 3,5; 8,45; 10,01; 23,43 mg/kg; dan 0,8 mg/mL. Hasil KLT menunjukkan bahwa jenis karotenoid pada kulit dan sirip ikan klown adalah astaxanthin, serta satu jenis karotenoid diduga zeaxanthin. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, maka perlu ditambahkan pigmen karotenoid, dan prekursor pigmen lainnya melalui pakan untuk ikan klown budidaya.The color quality of cultured clownfish is not as good as the wild one. However, it’s influenced by several factors. However, but there is not enough scientific data to be used as the basis for improvement. The purpose of this study was to analyze and evaluate the color quality difference between cultured and wild clown fish Amphiprion percula. Color qualities were measured in two zones: an orange-colored at zone-I was measured between gills and white band at the center of the body and an orange-colored at zone-II was measured between the center of white band and white band near the caudal peduncle. Parameters analyzed were L* (lightness), a* (redness), b* (yellowness), C (Chroma), H (Hue). Total carotenoid (TC) was analyzed on both zones-I and II, pectoral-fins, dorsal-fin, caudal-fin, and blood serum. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used to analyze the type of carotenoids in the skin and fin tissues. Color quality data was analyzed by T-test. Simple linier regression and descriptive analyses were used to analyzed the other parameters. The results showed that the color quality of wild clown fish was better than that of the cultured clown fish, indicated by high TC content in skin of zone-I, skin of zone-II, pectoral-fin, dorsal-fin, caudal-fin, and blood serum (51.64, 51.24, 136.40, 124.37, 194.18 mg/kg, and 2.2 mg/mL, respectively); and in cultured fish 2.5, 3.5, 8.45, 10.01, 23.43 mg/kg, and 0.8 mg/mL, respectively. TLC test results showed that carotenoid type in skin and fin of clownfish were astaxanthin, and one type of carotenoid was suspected as zeaxanthin. Based on the results of the study, it is necessary to add carotenoid pigments, especially astaxanthin or other precursor the feed to improve the color quality of cultured clown fish.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the body composition, nutrient uptake in mammary gland and milk amino acid profile of lactating Etawah Crossbred goats fed by tempeh by product. Twelve lactating goats were randomly allocated into three groups which fed by ration containing concentrate (R1), concentrate plus 25% fresh tempeh waste (R2) and concentrate plus 25% fermented tempeh waste (R3). Tempeh waste was fermented by Aspergillus niger. Kinggrass was given 50% of the total ration for all groups. Urea space technique was used to measure body composition before and after the experiment was done. Milk production was calculated two times a day during two months after giving birth (postpartum). Total milk protein and amino acid, whey and casein were analyzed by kjeldahl method and amino acid analyzer respectively. Nutrient uptake in mammary gland was calculated base on Fick principles. Result showed that there was significantly different on body weight, but on body water, protein and fat had no significant difference between the treatments. The best milk production was found in fermented tempeh waste group. Concentration of glutamic acid was dominant than other essential amino acids in whole milk and casein but there were no significant difference between groups for those essential amino acid profile. It was concluded that fermented tempeh waste could substitute 50% of total concentrate and had the highest body weight, milk yield and nutrient uptake in the mammary gland of lactating Etawah Crossbred goats. Abstract

The aim of this research was to evaluate the nutrient digestibility of late pregnancy local ewes treated with flushing ration and different feeding frequency. Twelve local ewes in the late pregnancy phase (BW 49.96 ± 9.67 kg) were divided on a Randomized Block Design with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments were P1 (without flushing), P2 (flushing at the before and after mating), P3 (flushing at the before and after mating, and middle of pregnancy), and P4 (flushing at the before and after mating, middle, and late of pregnancy). Flushing concentrate containing 2% coconut oil and 5% lemuru fish oil. The variables observed were nutrient consumption and nutrient digestibility. The data were analyzed by using ANOVA, the data with significant differences in the treatment effects were further tested using Duncan Test. The result showed that the treatments significantly affected (p<0.01) consumption of crude fat. Giving the flushing ration at the before and after mating, and mid pregnancy significantly increased (p<0.05) digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, and N-free extract. It can be concluded that the feeding frequency of flushing affects the consumption and digestibility of local sheep at the late stages of pregnancy. Giving flushing ration at the before and after mating, and middle of pregnancy showed the best digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, and N-free extract. Abstract

The cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) is one of the most common nonhuman primates used as an animal model in biomedical research related to atherosclerosis. However, little is known about genetic variation in the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene, its effect on cholesterol levels, and associated risks of atherosclerosis. There-fore this study aimed to identify genetic polymorphisms, namely single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), within the promoter region of LDLR and their relationship with animal responsiveness to hypercholesterolemia due to an atherogenic diet. In this research, SNPs were studied using DNA isolated from22 cynomolgus monkeys obtained from aprevious study, consisting of two hyporesponders, 19 hyperresponders, and one extremecase. The result showed that two SNPs existed in the promoter region, namelyg.−169T>C and g.−265G>A. SNP g.−265G>A showed linkages with extreme responsiveness and can be used as a potential genetic marker for extreme animals. The result of this study has extended our knowledge of polymorphism in the LDLR geneand its use intheselection of cynomolgus monkeys as animal models in research on hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Tonkean macaques are one of seven endemic macaque species on Sulawesi Island. Feeding management in captivity should pay attention to the quality, palatability, and feeding behavior patterns of animals. The goal of this study was to compare the feeding behavior of two social groups of Tonkean macaques at Schmutzer Primates Center (SPC) and Ragunan Zoo (RZ) with different captive management, which was expected to affect feeding behavior. Ad libitum sampling was used to observe daily behavior and hierarchy, while focal animal sampling was used to observe feeding behavior and feed preference. Data were collected from September 2013 until March 2014 with a total of 495 hours of observations. There were significant differences between the daily behavior of two groups of Tonkean macaques. Resting behavior was dominant in RZ group with non-enrichment feed cage, while feeding behavior was more common in the SPC group with an enrichment feed cage. The SPC group spent most of their feeding time in searching for feed, while choosing, carrying and refusing were greater in the RZ group. Both Tonkean macaque groups showed individual dominance in their feeding behavior. Provisioned feed in both locations had different diversity and preference values. The selection of feed required was based on preference values with attention to Tonkean macaques’ feed in nature. Cage construction, such as the SPC cage, was able to reduce abnormal behavior exhibited by individuals.

Abstract

The increased beef cattle production at traditional farms is a strategy to achieve meat self-sufficiency in 2026. This is accomplished through various parties, including the government, academics, researchers, the private sector, and farmers as the main actors. Therefore, this study aimed to determine and analyze criteria, performance criteria, strategies, and alternatives for sustainable beef cattle production in traditional farms based on the opinion of experts. The research location was School for Smallholder Community (SPR) Maju Bersama, Sungai Lilin Sub-District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Primary data were collected through FGD (focus group discussion) and interview with expert stakeholders, including farmers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, and research analyst. They were analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with R studio version 4.1.2. The result showed that Musi Banyuasin Regency has a natural resource potential for supporting beef cattle production with an institutional collaborative strategy. The interaction between the production factors showed that the feeding criteria were at the highest level, with 32.05%. Considering the performance criteria, business sustainability was essential at 35.70% and should be achieved by adopting a corporate strategy of 85.52%, implemented through alternative business management at 61.40%.
