Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria as probiotic candidates can be isolated from black soldier fly larvae. This study aimed to develop encapsulated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) probiotics from BSF larvae and to evaluate the effect of encapsulation on probiotic viability during 12 weeks of storage at room temperature and 4°C. The experimental design was a factorial completely randomized design with two treatments: storage temperature and storagetime. The variables observed are the number of cells and the level of cell resistance. The result showed that based on the growth curve of LAB isolates from BSF larvae, they could be harvested at 16 hours of age to be produced as probiotics. Encapsulated LAB probiotics from BSF larvae had a population of lactic acid bacteri (LAB) 107 CFU g-1 and were able to maintain the cell viability of 99.3%. Temperature and storage timesignificantly affect (p<0.05) the viability of encapsulated LAB. It can be conclude that encapsulation was able to optimally maintain the LAB viability at temperature of 4°C for 4 weeks of storage. Abstract

This research identified the effects of foliar application of boron fertilization and arbuscular mycorrhiza in the form of cookies (Miko-SC) on the growth and seed production of Jack bean. Jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) is a dual-purpose crop that produces seeds and green-biomass as a source of protein for human consumption and animal feed. Boron and Miko-SC significantly influences seed growth and development, and arbuscular mycorrhiza can enhance mineral uptake. This study employed four doses of boron foliar fertilizer (0, 23, 46, and 69 mg/l) and three diameters of Miko-SC (4, 5, and 6 cm). The highest values of plant height, stem diameter, and leaf size were observed in the combination of 46 mg/l boron and 5-cm Miko-SC. The highest number of leaves, pod weight, and grain weight were achieved at 23 mg/l boron combined with 6-cm Miko-SC. Conclusively, the optimal combination of boron and arbuscular mycorrhiza in the form of Miko-SC cookies significantly enhanced the growth of Jack bean, offering valuable insights into cultivation improvement as a forage and food crop.

Abstract

Prediction models for beef meat quality are necessary because production and consumption were significant and increasing yearly. This study aims to create a prediction model for beef freshness quality using the random forest regressor (RFR) algorithm and to improve the accuracy of the predictions using hyperparameter tuning. The use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in predicting beef quality is an easy, cheap, and fast technique. This study used six meat quality parameters as prediction target variables for the test. The R² metric was used to evaluate the prediction results and compare the performance of the RFR with default parameters versus the RFR with hyperparameter tuning (RandomSearchCV). Using default parameters, the R-squared (R²) values for color (L*), drip loss (%), pH, storage time (hour), total plate colony (TPC in cfu/g), and water moisture (%) were 0.789, 0.839, 0.734, 0.909, 0.845, and 0.544, respectively. After applying hyperparameter tuning, these R² scores increased to 0.885, 0.931, 0.843, 0.957, 0.903, and 0.739, indicating an overall improvement in the model’s performance. The average performance increase for prediction results for all beef quality parameters is 0.0997 or 14% higher than the default parameters.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate starter concentrate containing plant-derived protein (Indigofera sp.) or animal-derived protein (Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae meal), on hematological and blood metabolite profiles of weaned Dorper lambs. A total of 21 weaned Dorper male lambs were utilized in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatment groups and seven replications. The treatment groups included P0 = Martabe Farm feed (control), P1 = forage and starter concentrate containing Indigofera sp., and P2 = forage and starter concentrate containing BSF larvae meal. The parameters measured were nutrient intake, amino acid intake, hematology, and blood metabolites. The concentrate starter containing Indigofera sp. or BSF larvae meal significantly increased (p<0.05) nutrients and most of the individual amino acid intake, BUN, and erythrocyte count. It is concluded that the use of plant-based protein (Indigofera sp.) or animal-based protein (BSF larvae meal) in starter concentrate enhances nutrient intake and does not interfere with blood homeostasis in weaned Dorper male lambs. Abstract

Conventional chopper machines in farms such as PT. X often faces limitations in capacity and a lack of ergonomic design for operators. Modernization of the machine, including modifications in design and motor, is expected to improve production capacity and operator comfort. This study aims to assess the effect of chopper machine modification on improving production efficiency and operator ergonomics. Data was collected through direct field practice, observation, documentation, and interviews. The data obtained for evaluating machine capacity were analysed using the Paired T-Test, while comparative variables such as machine design, forage cutting percentage, and rapid entire body assessment (REBA) were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that modifications to the chopper machine at PT. X had a significant impact on increasing operational efficiency and reducing ergonomic risks for operators. Machine working capacity increased by 91.28%, from 1,079.32 kg hour-1 to 2,064.50 kg hour-1, accompanied by a reduction in total chopping cycle time from 66.79 seconds to 34.90 seconds. Although idle time slightly increased due to changes in the number of operators, work efficiency still showed substantial improvement through the integration of semi-automatic systems (bagging scale and conveyor). From an ergonomic perspective, posture analysis using the REBA method indicated a reduction in risk level from medium (score 7) before modification to low (score 3) after modification. In conclusion, modifications to the chopper machine at PT. X significantly increased operational efficiency, with a production capacity increase of up to 91.28% and a reduction in cycle time. Ergonomic evaluation showed a decrease in posture-related risk from medium to low. These findings demonstrate that the modifications not only accelerated the production process but also enhanced operator comfort and safety. Abstract

Local sheep are small ruminants that are kept by many farmers. The reproductive success of the animals is influenced by the ration offered. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reproductive performance of multiparous ewes with different flush management. For the study, 16 multiparous ewes were used in a 4 x 4 randomized group design. Treatments consisted of P1 = no flushing, P2 = flushing before and after mating, P3 = flushing before and after mating and at mid-pregnancy, P4 = flushing before and after mating, at mid-pregnancy and at the end of pregnancy. The variables observed were the percentage of pregnancy, number of embryos, embryo diameter, amnion diameter, embryo durability, number of offspring and duration of pregnancy. The results showed that the management of flushing rations influenced the pregnancy rate and amniotic diameter. The number and diameter of embryos, gestation length, number of offspring and embryo lifespan did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). This study concludes that the management of flushing rations affects reproductive performance in terms of pregnancy rate and amniotic diameter.
