Abstract

Abstract

Adolescent pregnancy is a public health issue that requires special attention due to its serious impact on both maternal and neonatal health. Girls who become pregnant during adolescence are at higher risk of experiencing various complications during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and for their newborns. This study aims to identify the factors influencing adolescent pregnancy in Indonesia. The method used is a literature review by searching sources through Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and DOAJ. Data sources were obtained from relevant research articles published between 2020 and 2025. The findings indicate that adolescent pregnancy is influenced by both internal and external factors, including education level, reproductive health knowledge, risky dating behavior, parental roles, peer influence, family economic conditions, and exposure to information media. Understanding these factors can serve as a basis for designing strategies to prevent adolescent pregnancy. The results of this study provide practical contributions as a reference for developing intervention programs for adolescent pregnancy prevention involving families, schools, communities, and healthcare providers.

Highlight: • There was an increase in the accumulation of B3 waste in health centers during the COVID-19 pandemic. • The knowledge and skills level of health center staff in medical THM waste management before and after medical THM waste management training were determined. • Medical THM waste management training was increasing the knowledge and skills level of health center staff. Abstract: The generation of medical toxic and hazardous material (THM) waste at public health centers tends to increase during the Covid-19 pandemic. Only 6.89% of the health centers have medical waste management practices that meet the standards. Medical waste management practices not in accordance with the procedures can be a source of infection, even though only 56% of health workers have good knowledge and attitudes in solid medical waste management. For this reason, it is necessary to increase the skills of health center staff in managing medical THM waste during the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and skills of health center staff in medical THM waste management before and after medical THM waste management training. The training participants were 20 health center staffs who filled out a pretest questionnaire to measure their level of knowledge and skills prior to the training. The training materials include THM waste, medical THM waste, medical THM waste management and medical THM Temporary Storage. After the training, a post-test was conducted to measure the knowledge and skills scores of the trainees. The results of this study indicated that there was a significant difference in knowledge before and after training (p < 0.05). The average knowledge score before training was 6.2 (sufficient knowledge) and after training 8.15 (good knowledge). There was a significant difference in skill scores before and after training (p <0.05). The average skill before training was 6.3 (adequate) and after training 8.65 (good). In conclusion, there was an increase in the skills of health center staff in managing medical THM waste during covid-19 pandemic after participating in medical THM waste management training by the Community Service Team, Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia.

Abstract

Highlights: Due to the increasing elderly population in Indonesia, this study must address the knowledge and skill gaps among health cadres in a number of Integrated Health Posts for the Elderly (Pos Layanan Terpadu Lanjut Usia/ Posyandu Lansia). Through this study, the health cadres increased their knowledge and skills, enabling them to provide comprehensive health services for the elderly. Abstract Numerous issues have arisen as a result of the large size and rapid growth of the elderly population, attesting to the need for serious efforts from all sectors to enhance their welfare. However, the health cadres at the Integrated Health Post for the Elderly (Pos Layanan Terpadu Lanjut Usia/ Posyandu Lansia) lacked the training that would have equipped them with the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out their duties. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of training for enhancing the cadres' knowledge and skills in providing comprehensive health services for the elderly. This study was quasi-experimental research with a pre-test and post-test design. The data analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test (p>0.05) and the Wilcoxon test (p<0.05). A total of 30 health cadres at Songgon Community Health Center were measured for their levels of knowledge and skills before and after the training. The training included filling out health evaluation charts, providing leaflets containing health counseling materials for the elderly, practicing exercise for the elderly, and singing an elderly marching song. Before filling out the health evaluation chart, the cadres had to measure the elderly's degree of independence as well as their mental, emotional, and nutritional status. The cadres also had to measure the weight, height, and blood pressure of the elderly. Prior to training, the cadres' knowledge of hospitalization referrals, independence, and physical exercise for the elderly was limited. The cadres' skills in filling out health evaluation charts, assessing mental, emotional, and nutritional status, measuring blood pressure, and instructing physical exercise were also inadequate. There was a significant difference in the knowledge and skills of the health cadres before and after training (p<0.05). In conclusion, there was an improvement in the health cadres' knowledge and skills regarding comprehensive health services for the elderly at the Posyandu Lansia.

Abstract

Introduction: The maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Indonesia declined to 189 per 100,000 live births in 2020. However, this figure remains significantly above the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target of 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. One essential strategy to reduce MMR is to increase the coverage of antenatal care (ANC), particularly the initial visit (first ANC), which should occur before 12 weeks of gestation to facilitate early detection of pregnancy risks and prevent complications. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with first ANC visits at Puskesmas Akle. Methods: This was an observational analytic study employing a cross-sectional design. The population included 138 pregnant women, with a sample of 50 participants selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed using the chi-square test. Results and Discussion: The findings revealed that only 42% of respondents attended first ANC visits before 12 weeks of gestation. Significant associations were found between maternal age (p = 0.041) and parity (p = 0.014) and compliance with first ANC visits. However, no significant association was identified between maternal employment status (p = 0.976) and early ANC attendance. Conclusion: Compliance with early ANC visits remains low and is influenced by maternal age, parity, and accessibility to health facilities. Targeted health education and strengthened ANC services are essential to improving access for pregnant women, particularly those in underserved or hard-to-reach areas

Abstract

Abstract: Bradycardia is a condition in which the heart rate slows to below 50–60 beats per minute. Although it may occur physiologically in athletes and the elderly, symptomatic bradycardia with dizziness, chest pain, or loss of consciousness requires proper treatment. Permanent pacemaker implantation is one of the main therapies for severe bradycardia. The intent of this study is to compare the quality of life (QoL) of bradycardia patients with permanent pacemakers who have used the device for less than one year and more than one year. Material and Methods: This observational study uses a cross-sectional design. A total of 47 patient samples were collected from RSUD Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya, during 2023–2024. Data were obtained using the Short Form - 36 (SF-36) questionnaire, that includes eight Quality of life domains , and analyzed with SPSS using independent sample t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests to determine the mean differences between the two patient groups based on pacemaker duration. Results: In general, permanent pacemaker implantation improves several aspects of quality of life, particularly social functioning and mental health. However, not all domains showed significant improvement. Patients with pacemaker exceeding one year exhibited a modest decrease in vitality and mental health scores. Independent sample t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests indicated no significant differences between the two groups in every domain (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The study shows that the duration of pacemaker use does not always significantly correlate with improved QoL, but continuous medical care and adequate patient support effectively help maintain stable physical, psychological, and social well-being over time. -- Highlights: 1. This study finds that quality of life remains comparable between bradycardia patients with shorter and longer durations of permanent pacemaker use, suggesting early stabilization after implantation. 2. The findings indicate that sustained clinical follow-up, patient adaptation, and device effectiveness may help maintain consistent physical and psychosocial well-being over time.

Abstract

The proportion of elderly individuals in Indonesia is increasing and is projected to reach 19.9% by 2045. This growing elderly population may become a burden on families and communities if the elderly are not in optimal physical, psychological, social, and economic health. Health, social, and economic challenges can impact the psychological well-being of the elderly, leading to mental health issues among them. Public health centers are primary health facilities that serve elderly individuals directly. Therefore, it is essential for healthcare workers at public health centers to have the knowledge necessary to detect early mental health issues in the elderly to enable effective mental health service management, with the involvement of families and communities. This study employed a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The respondents were 40 healthcare workers from Trawas public health center in Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia. Their knowledge of elderly mental health was assessed using a 10-question questionnaire administered before and after a health education intervention. The health education covered mental health issues in the elderly, early detection of mental health problems in the elderly, and the roles of family, community health volunteers, and public health center staff in providing mental health services for the elderly. The healthcare workers’ knowledge of elderly mental health had a median score of 5.5 (range: 3-7) before the health education intervention and 8 (range: 6-9) after the intervention. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of <0.001, indicating a significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the health education intervention. In conclusion, health education effectively enhances public health center healthcare workers' knowledge of mental health in the elderly.
