Abstract

The study assesses the potential use of anthropometric parameters and their optimal cut-off value for predicting the anemia status of adolescent girls. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 2,184 adolescent girls aged 15‒19 years from West Bandung and Sumedang districts of Indonesia who participated in the Better Investment for Stunting Alleviation Program (BISA). Anemia is defined as a Haemoglobin (Hb) level <12 g/dl and was analyzed by HemoCue® 201+. Anthropometric parameters studied were Body Weight (BW), BMI-for-Age z-Score (BAZ), Waist Circumference (WC), Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR), and Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) and all were measured according to WHO procedure. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) was used to analyze the potential of anthropometric parameter to predict anemia status. Based on multivariate analysis, a significant correlation was found between age (OR=0.88; 95% CI:0.79‒0.97) and WHtR (OR=0.12; 95% CI:0.02‒0.63) with anemia status. The ROC analysis revealed that the WHtR parameter had the highest Area Under the Curve (AUC) for predicting anemia, although with a very low accuracy (AUC=0.529). The optimal cut-off with value of WHtR for adolescent girls was ≤0.44. This study suggests that WHtR is a potential parameter for early detection of anemia status among adolescent girls and needs to be confirmed with further studies.

Abstract

The iron supplementation program is one of the efforts to overcome anemia based on WHO recommendations. The compliance of iron supplement consumption is an indicator of the success of anemia prevention programs. This cross-sectional study aims to analyze factors related to compliance with iron supplement consumption among adolescent girls in health center areas in Kuningan Regency. The study involved 105 respondents selected using a proportional random sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire for each variable. The data were analyzed using Chi-Square statistical test. The results showed that only 21% of adolescent girls were found to be compliant in taking iron supplements. Approximately 62.9% of adolescent girls with good knowledge were compliant in taking iron supplements (p=0.041). 70.4% of adolescent girls with positive attitudes were compliant in taking iron supplements (p=0.018). Approximately 50.6% of adolescent girls lacked support from teachers (p=0.019), 71.1% lacked support from peers (p=0.010), and 62.7% lacked access to nutrition education or counseling at school (p=0.010). This study suggests the need of cross-sectoral support from both the health and education sectors to strengthen the implementation of the routine iron tablet consumption program as recommended.

Abstract

Adolescents are an age group that tends to skip breakfast. A breakfast is a morning meal before starting the day's activities. The role of breakfast is very important for the performance and academic achievement of adolescents, especially to increase the  academic performances and achievements in adolescents notably for those who are active in academic or school activities. The series of processes of the role of intake and academic achievement are closely related with the quality of intake and one of the cognitive functions, namely, working memory ability. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between intake quality, blood glucose levels, and working memory in adolescents attending junior high schools in Malang City. This study used a cross-sectional research model with a sample size of 42 subjects. Subjects were aged between 12-15 years from SMP Negeri 25 Malang City. Data consisted of subject characteristics (age, sex, pocket money), family characteristics (parents' monthly income, last education and occupation, number of family members), quality of intake using the DQI-A component, blood glucose levels, and working memory ability using the Working Memory Questionnaire (WMQ) score. Analysis used SPSS 16.0 to determine the distribution of data and test the relationship through bivariate analysis between the quality of intake, blood glucose levels and working memory in the subjects. There was no relationship between the quality of intake and DQI-A components, blood glucose levels, and working memory (p>0.05).

Abstract

Adolescents are a group of people undergoing transitional growth, during which their nutritional needs increase significantly. Based on DQI-A, the diet quality of adolescents aged 13–15 years in Bogor is classified as poor, at only 32.2%. The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program aims to ensure that adolescents consistently consume a balanced diet at school. This study aims to analyze the differences in diet quality among junior high school adolescents who are recipients (88 students from SMP PGRI 6) and non-recipients (88 students from SMP PGRI 5) of the free nutritious meals program at school. A cross-sectional comparative design was used involving 176 students selected purposively. Data on individual and family characteristics were collected through structured questionnaires; dietary intake was assessed by two non-consecutive 24-hour recalls conducted by trained interviewers using food photographs and the DQI-A method to measure the quality of the subjects' diets, including dietary quality, dietary diversity, and dietary equilibrium. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test and the independent-sample t-test. Results showed no significant differences in individual and socioeconomic characteristics between groups (p>0.05). However, significant differences were found in all DQI-A components, including dietary quality, dietary diversity, and dietary equilibrium (p<0.001). The MBG group had a higher average total DQI-A score (49.81%) compared with the non-MBG group (39.15%). These results show that the MBG program helps teens eat better. Recommendations include strengthening the availability and variety of nutritious foods in school meal programs, enhancing nutrition education in schools, and encouraging collaboration among schools, parents, and policymakers. Future researchers are advised to examine the long-term effects of the MBG program on both nutritional status and academic performance.

Abstract

Adolescents are a population group highly vulnerable to nutritional problems due to rapid physical growth, increased nutrient needs, and the formation of long-term eating habits. Understanding the quality of their diet is essential for preventing both nutrient deficiencies and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This study aimed to assess adolescent diet quality using the Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) and its Indonesian modification (GDQS-I) and examine their association with nutritional status. The GDQS was developed to meet the need for a concise, sensitive, and globally applicable metric capable of evaluating both undernutrition and the risk of NCDs. This cross-sectional study was conducted from August to September 2025 and included 61 eighth-grade students from SMPN 2 Ciomas, Bogor. Dietary intake was assessed using repeated 2×24-hour food recalls, and nutritional status was determined through anthropometric measurements using the BMI-for-age index. The results showed that most adolescents had a normal nutritional status (82%); however, their diet quality was generally poor, with 67.2% categorized as high-risk based on the GDQS and 95.1% based on the GDQS-I. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated significantly lower GDQS-I scores than GDQS scores (p<0.001). The Spearman correlation test found no significant association between diet quality and nutritional status (p>0.05). In conclusion, these findings suggest that the GDQS-I may be useful for screening dietary risks among Indonesian adolescents, although further validation is required.

Abstract

Nutritional problems among school-age children remain significant, mainly due to unbalanced diets and low vegetable and fruit intake. In Indonesia, 97.7% of students do not meet the recommended consumption levels, with West Java reaching 98.3%. Most nutrition education programs emphasize knowledge improvement without considering the psychological factors influencing eating behavior. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which highlights the role of intention in shaping behavior, has rarely been applied in Indonesia. This study examined the effect of TPB-based nutrition education on knowledge, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention to consume vegetables and fruits among elementary students in Bogor District. Using a quasi-experimental design with multiple random sampling, 70 fifth-grade students were divided into treatment and control groups (n=35 each). The instruments showed good validity (r-count > r-table) and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.7). The results indicated significant improvements in all TPB constructs (p < 0.05), except for subjective norm in the control group, with higher Cohen’s d values in the treatment group. TPB-based nutrition education effectively enhanced students’ intentions and behaviors toward consuming fruits and vegetables. Further research should consider longer interventions, follow-up evaluations, and the inclusion of additional influencing factors.

Abstract

Breakfast is an essential component of a healthy diet for school-aged children, yet it is often neglected. This study aimed to analyze the association between breakfast intake, blood glucose levels, and short-term memory among elementary school students in Nagan Raya Regency. This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 150 students from grades IV, V, and VI across three primary schools in Nagan Raya District with a purposive sampling technique.  Short-term memory was assessed at 08:30 a.m. using a picture recognition memory test, and blood glucose levels were measured at 09:00 a.m. using the finger-prick method. Breakfast intake was measured using the recall method.  Data on student characteristics (gender, daily allowance, and mother’s education) and nutritional status were sourced from the 2023 GENIUS program (Nutrition education and snacks program for school children). The statistical tests used were the Mann–Whitney U test and the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that breakfast energy intake was positively and significantly associated with blood glucose levels, and blood glucose levels were positively and significantly associated with short-term memory. Consuming a complete breakfast plays an important role in maintaining stable blood glucose levels and supporting of short-term memory among primary school students.

Abstract

Food waste remains a major challenge in school meal programs, as it not only causes economic losses but also leads to resource inefficiency, and reduced nutritional benefits. This study aims to analyze differences in food waste amounts across free nutritious meal programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, estimate nutrient loss, and identify related factors of food waste among students in East Aceh Regency. A cross-sectional design was employed involving 106 students purposively selected from three schools participating in the free nutritious meal programs. Data were collected using a weighing method over a 10-day menu cycle, anthropometric measurements, structured interviews on student characteristics, and food preferences. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson and Spearman correlations, and linear regression. The results showed that the average food waste was 24,3% of the served portion, with the highest amount in middle school (29,8%) and the lowest in high school (16,5%). The largest proportion of waste came from staple foods, vegetables, and plant-based side dishes. Nutrient loss due to food waste was equivalent to 12 complete lunch portions for a child per year. Factors significantly associated with food waste were age, gender, BMI-for-age, pocket money, and menu variety (p<0,05). Older students, males, who perceived the menu as more varied, tended to waste less food. These findings highlight the importance of portion adjustment, appropriate serving times, diversified menus, and nutrition education to reduce food waste and optimize the benefits of the Free Nutritious Meal program
