Abstract

Stunting remains a major malnutrition problem in Indonesia, and is caused by chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections. In 2022, the SSGI reported that Aceh ranked fifth with a high prevalence of stunting (>30%). Malnutrition during the golden period (toddlers) can be corrected. This study analyzed the factors that influence stunting and the most dominant factors in children aged 6-24 months in the Samadua District, South Aceh Regency. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional design. Participants were 120 children under five years of age conducted in Samadua District by simple random sampling from November 2023 to January 2024. Data were collected through interviews, using questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and recall. Statistical applications were used for data processing. Bivariate data analysis was performed using binary logistic regression test with p<0,25 criteria and multivariate analysis was continued using logistic regression test on influential variables in bivariate analysis and 95% confidence interval (CI). Conclusion: Risk factors affecting stunting in children aged 6-24 months in Samadua District, South Aceh Regency, were birth length (OR=13,000), birth weight (OR=15,400), maternal anemia history (OR=18, 000), ANC history (OR=20,429), ARI frequency (OR=7,500), protein adequacy (OR=5,910), fat  (OR = 7,083), calcium (OR = 6,081), iron (OR = 4,375), and zinc (OR = 5,500) intakes.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant global health concern among children under two years old, underscoring the importance of maternal skills in food preparation to prevent this issue. This study evaluated the impact of Posyandu cadre training and support on maternal capacity and its relationship with Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices.   Seventy mothers and their children under the age of two, along with ten cadres, participated in this study. The intervention began with cadre training, followed by support for mothers. The results revealed that cadre knowledge of food material science (FMS) (p=0.033) and attitudes toward clean and healthy behavior (CHB) (p=0.038) significantly improved after training. Mothers demonstrated significant improvements in knowledge of FMS (p<0.001), Nutritional Requirements of Children Under Two (NRCT) (p<0.001), and CHB (p=0.041); attitudes toward complementary feeding (CF) (p=0.030). Cadre knowledge and maternal knowledge in FMS was found a significant correlation (p=0.026). However, cadre attitudes did not correlate with the knowledge and attitudes of the mother. The age of children under two was correlated with MMD (p=0.036), MMF (p=0.017), and MAD (p=0.036). Additionally, maternal attitudes toward food were associated with MMF (p=0.037) and dietary diversity (p=0.034) in children under the age of two. These findings underscore the significance of cadre training and maternal support programs in enhancing feeding practices, which may lead to improved nutritional outcomes. Strengthening the cadre's knowledge and skills could be key to promoting optimal IYCF practices.

Abstract

A congenital facial anomaly that manifests as a cleft lip, cleft palate, or both—without the involvement of other organ abnormalities—is known as a non-syndromic orofacial cleft (OFC) (Tobing, 2017). According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2019), OFC represents 0.2% of disabilities among Indonesian children aged 24 to 59 months. The causes of OFC are multifactorial. In Indonesia, approximately 7,500 new OFC cases are reported annually, with a rising trend (Purwitasari et al., 2020). This study aimed to investigate the association between micronutrient intake, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, and maternal exposure to secondhand smoke with the incidence of non-syndromic OFC. A case-control study was conducted at Harapan Kita Women and Children Hospital in Jakarta, involving 35 participants in both the case and control groups. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained through direct interviews with respondents, while secondary data were sourced from maternal and child health (MCH) books. Micronutrient intake was measured using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 365 and SPSS version 25.0 for Windows, applying logistic regression. The findings indicated that low folic acid and zinc intake, insufficient maternal weight gain during pregnancy, and maternal exposure to secondhand smoke were significantly associated with the development of non-syndromic orofacial cleft (p < 0.05).

Abstract

Indonesia still faces various challenges that hinder the development of high-quality human resources in the future, one of which is nutrition and health. Stunting is an unresolved nutritional problem. This study aimed to improve cadres’ knowledge and skills as a step toward preventing stunting. This study used a pre-post intervention design to analyze changes in cadres’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills after participating in the Royco Nutrimenu-Edufamily training program. The methods used included socialization and training on stunting, complementary feeding (MPASI), and counseling skills. The data were collected using an online questionnaire. The activity was carried out in July 2023, involving 100 cadres from 10 villages in Bogor City: Situ Gede, Bubulak, Margajaya, Balumbang Jaya, Sindang Barang, Gunung Batu, Loji, Curug, Pasir Kuda, and Semplak. The materials covered were 1) The dangers and prevention of stunting; 2) The importance of MPASI for child growth and development; 3) The Royco Nutrimenu MPASI program; and 4) Tips on becoming a counselor. After training, each cadre provided education and MPASI cooking demonstrations to mothers with children aged 6‒24 months. Each cadre educated 10 mothers, for a total of 1000 mothers. The results showed an increase in cadres’ knowledge and skills after the training. In addition, cadres were able to transfer the knowledge and skills they acquired.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of vitamin C, vitamin E and multivitamin-mineral supplements on reducing plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level among college students of IPB. The design of this study was quasi experimental with pre-post test and control design. The subjects were 24 healthy students and divided into 4 groups, namely 1) vitamin C group (given supplement of vitamin C 500 mg), 2) vitamin E group (given supplement of vitamin E 200 IU), 3) multivitamin-mineral group (given a supplement consisted of vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 30 mg, zinc 15 mg and copper 1.5 mg), and 4) control group who were not given any supplement intervention. The supplements in the form of capsule were given once daily for seven days. Before the intervention, the plasma MDA level of subjects were not different significantly (p>0.05). After 7 day intervention, the MDA level of VC, VE, and MVM group were reduced significantly compared to before intervention (p<0.05), whereas plasma MDA level of control group seemed increased although not significant compare to pre-intervention. The largest reduction was occured on vitamin E group (-55.1%), followed by vitamin C group (-47.2%), and multivitamin-mineral group (-44.7%). The ANOVA test shows that there was a significant difference on reduction of plasma MDA levels among groups. The difference occured between control group and each of intervention group of VC, VE, and MVM. There were no significant differences between two groups of intervention (p>0.05). Hence, the study shows that in 7 day intervention, vitamin C, vitamin E or multivitamin-mineral supplement had relative similar effects on reducing plasma MDA level.

Abstract

Anemia is a common health issue among adolescent girls, including female students at boarding schools, and it was found that the prevalence of anemia in one boarding school in Indonesia was 38%. Anemia is indicated by low hemoglobin levels caused by insufficient intake of iron and other nutrients. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between anemia knowledge, menu acceptability, and nutrient intake and hemoglobin levels in female students. This study used a cross-sectional design conducted at Dar El Hikmah Islamic Boarding School Pekanbaru, with a total of 105 female MA students who were selected purposively based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected from November to December 2024. Anemia knowledge was measured using a questionnaire, menu acceptability estimated by leftover food, nutrient intake obtained from 2 × 24 h food recall, and hemoglobin (Hb) level measured using easy touch GCHb. Data were analyzed using the rank-Spearman test. The results showed that most subjects (53,3%) had anemia or Hb levels <12 g/dL. There was a significant negative correlation between the acceptability of the breakfast menu (r=−0,366; p=<0,001), lunch (r=−0,445; p=<0,001), and dinner (r=−0,516; p=<0,001), and a positive correlation between anemia knowledge (r=0,254; p=0,009); protein (r=0,235; p=0,019), iron (r=0,200; p=0,040), vitamin C (r=0,349; p=<0,001), vitamin B9 (r=0,471; p=<0,001), and vitamin B12 intake (r=0,221; p=0,023) with Hb level. In conclusion, knowledge is needed to prevent anemia, and the quality of school menus must be improved to increase acceptance and nutrient intake.

Abstract

Nutritional problems among school-aged children negatively affect both physical growth and academic achievement. In Indonesia, approximately 41% of children attend school while hungry, and only 10% habitually consume a nutritionally balanced breakfast. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the “Free Nutritious Meal” (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) program on concentration levels among elementary school students. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments and a control group was applied. The study was conducted in Banda Aceh, with SD Negeri 50 serving as the intervention group and SD Negeri 20 as the control group. A total of 83 students in the intervention group received free nutritious meals, while 83 students comprised the control group. The study was carried out from April to June 2025. Concentration levels were measured using the Grid Concentration Test, a simple psychological tool to assess focus and attention. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to present respondent characteristics and concentration distribution, and Chi-Square tests to compare within-group and between-group changes. Results demonstrated a significant improvement in concentration among students in the intervention group between baseline and endline (p = 0.020), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (p = 0.328). The MBG program effectively enhanced student concentration. Strengthening program quality and providing nutrition education to families are recommended to support healthy eating habits and maximize the program’s impact on children’s cognitive function.
