Abstract

Population and socio-economic growth trigger changes in land use functions. Land use and climate change in line with the increase in the rate of surface water and a decrease in the quality of water infiltration into the soil. Decreasing water absorption triggers an abundance of water on the surface which leads to hydrometeorological disasters, one of them is flooding. The research study is in Pekalongan City which has a very flat topography a nd the estuary area of several rivers from the upstream area. The current condition of Pekalongan City has a huge potential for flood disaster. The purposes of this study are to measure the depth of the groundwater level, to delineate the flooding area, and to recommend the infiltration wells based on the Geographic Information System. The methods were hydrogeological mapping, including the measurement of the water table, collecting land use maps, delineating flooding zone, calculating impermeable zones, collecting hydrological data such as precipitation . The results show that the groundwater level at the research location is classified into 3 classes, namely 0 -1.5 meters, 1.5-3 meters, and > 3 meters. The need for infiltration wells in the flood-prone areas of Pekalongan City is 57,718 units. The needs for rainwater infiltration wells in areas outside flood -prone areas and groundwater depth> 1.5 meters are 227,416 units with a well's depth between 1.5 to 4 meters. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the further effect of soybean oil and phycocyanin extract against the quality of macronutrient (fat, protein, lactose) and also Solid Non-Fat (SNF) in cow’s milk. Two different substances, i.e., soybean oil and different amount of phycocyanin extract was added into the milk. The result showed the increase of protein content gradually from 3.49 ± 0.230 to 3.88 ± 0.010 when phycocyanin was added. The inverse with the decreased fat content from the control sample, but after the addition of phycocyanin extract, it was increased gradually 6.15 ± 0.210 to 6.35 ± 0.21. SNF has increased from 10.61 ± 0.014 to 10.87 ± 0.007, while the decreasing level of lactose has been shown from 5.74  ± 0.021 to 5.62  ± 0.028 due to addition of phycocyanin. In conclusion,  the addition of phycocyanin extract can increase the protein and SNF content of milk. This phycocyanin extract also acts as an antioxidant agent so that it can reduce the oxidation process, which might be caused by the addition of soybean oil. Soybean oil might be used as a food additive to improve the fat content of milk but must be accompanied by an antioxidant agent to prevent the oxidation process.

Abstract

Passive solar still is the simplest design for distilling seawater by harnessing solar energy. Although it is undeniable that solar still is a promising device to provide an additional freshwater source for global increasing water demand, low thermal efficiency along with daily distillate yield are its major disadvantages. A conventional solar still can produced 2 to 5 L/m2day. Various studies have been carried out to improve passive solar stills in terms of daily productivity, thermal efficiency, and economic effectiveness. Most of the researches that relate to the daily output improvement of passive solar still concentrates on enhancing evaporation or/and condensation processes. While the condensation process is influenced by wind velocity and characteristics of the condensed surface, the evaporation process is mainly affected by the temperature of basin water. Different parameters affect the brackish water temperature such as solar radiation, design parameters (for example water depth, insulators, basin liner absorptivity, reflectors, sun tracking system, etc). The inclined angle of the top cover is suggested to equal the latitude of the experimental place. Moreover, the decrease of water depth was obtained as a good operational parameter, however, the shallow water depth is required additional feed water for ensuring no dry spot existence. Reflectors and sun-tracking systems help solar still absorb as much solar intensity as possible. The internal reflector can enhance daily yield and efficiency of stepped solar still up to 75% and 56% respectively, whereas, passive solar still with the support of a sun-tracking system improved daily yield up to 22%. Despite large efforts to investigate the impact of the different parameters on passive solar distillation, the effect of the basin liner (including appropriate shapes and type of material), needs to be analyzed for improvement in practical utilization. The present work has reviewed the investigation of the solar still performance with various types of basin liner. The review of solar stills has been conducted critically with rectangular basin, fins basin, corrugated basin, wick type, steps shape, and cylindrical shape basin with variety of top cover shapes. The findings from this work conclude that the basin liner with a cylindrical shape had better performance in comparison with other metal types and provides higher freshwater output. Stepped type, inclined, fin absorber, and corrugated shapes had the efficient performance.  Further exploration revealed that copper is the best-used material for the productivity of passive solar still.

Abstract

The relationship between literature and psychology commonly derives from psychological dimension in literary works and the application of psychology theory in interpreting literary texts. This essay discusses a psychological study in Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. Rebecca is a very psychological novel, since a lot of psychological phenomena emerges from the beginning to the end of the novel. Psychological phenomena found in the novel among other things are dream analysis, Narcissist complex, Cinderella complex, Electra complex, impulsive id, ego, and super ego, cathexis, as well as various types of ego defense mechanism. Each character within the novel such as Rebecca, Maxim de Winter, Maxim’s second wife, and Mrs. Danvers, have his or her psychological characteristics, reaction, and problem. Dream in the beginning and the burning Manderley house at the end of the story are symbol of the ultimate psychological phenomena in the novel Rebecca.

Abstract

Cellulase is a very important enzyme for lignocelluloses based ethanol production. Bagasse contains mainly cellulose (57.76%), hemicellulose (12.44%), lignin (21.34%), and others (7.96%). Lignocellulosic material has been considered as the good option for cellulase production because it is cheap and already available in a huge amount. The objective of this research was to produce cellulase enzyme and to optimize it by using response surface methodology. The bagasse with water content of 80% was incubated with 2 ml inoculum of Aspergillus niger ITBCC L74 in a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask. After reaching the specified time the enzyme was extracted and then determined for its activity. Effect of process parameters such as pH, urea and MgCl2 addition were studied. The optimal cellulase activity was achieved at urea concentration of 4.5% (w/w), MgCl2 concentration of 1 mM and pH of 3.5, with maximum enzyme activity was 0.630 U/gr.

Abstract

The use of petroleum-based plastics has raised environmental issues as more plastic waste enters and accumulates in the environment. It has led to the development of biodegradable plastics. Starch is one of the potential materials to make biodegradable plastic, but starch-based plastic has poor mechanical strength. Blending starch with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and lignin is expected to improve the mechanical properties of the plastic. Biodegradable plastic films from PVA/starch/lignin blends with glycerol as a plasticizer were prepared using an internal mixer for compounding and a hot press molding machine for film making. The percentage of lignin (2-10%), glycerol (25-65%), and mixing temperature (190-230 oC) were varied according to the three levels of the Box-Behnken design. The ANOVA evaluation revealed that glycerol had the most significant effect on the mechanical properties of the film. Then, three models for the estimation of tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear resistance were developed. As expected, the models satisfactorily predict the effect of all input variables on the response variables. The optimum conditions for preparing the film were acquired from the equations, namely 197.6 oC for the temperature, 10% for lignin, and 45.1% for glycerol. The biodegradable plastic prepared using the optimum conditions possessed a tensile strength of 8.46 ± 1.08 MPa, an elongation at break of 139.00 ± 8.59%, and a tear resistance of 69.50 ± 2.50 N/mm. These values are in good agreement with the predicted values. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2022-06-02-03 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

Dodol is a type of food made from coconut milk, sticky rice flour, and sugar. Its main characteristic is stickiness, which becomes a difficulty during the stirring and packaging process. The need for mechanization results in the instability of production capacity. For 25 years, the core problem solving is a stainless steel material mixer with a pitch blade type that maintains the use of copper pans. This thing overcomes human strength, uniformity of dodol dough, and eliminates shifts between workers. The second is the feeding of dodol, which has been cooled to the screw extrusion rotation and results in uniform diameter of the product roll. The duration of this stage cuts the packaging time from 1-2 minutes to 26-50 seconds per dodol package (250 grams). Besides, the updating of conventional methods has been able to encourage products to reach food shops by submitting marketing authorizations at the Bekasi District Health Office. Lack of sales licenses become middlemen loopholes. Labeling production on selling products could increase the level of consumer confidence in market competition. The proximate test of dodol UKM could compete with the quality of Garut dodol.

Abstract

Propeller turbine performance can be improved by changing the turbine design parameters. One method that was developed is to vary the blade angle on the runner's blades. Analysis of the influence of blade angle on propeller turbine performance is done through numerical simulations based on computational fluid dynamics. The simulation is done with variations of propeller turbine blade angles of 180, 230, and 280 at flow rates of 0.08 m/s to 0.5 m/s. Simulation results show turbines with 250 blade angles have the best performance compared to turbine blade angles of 230 and 280. While the turbine blade angles of 230 tend to have higher performance compared to angles of 280 even though both have peak values for the corresponding power coefficient. Keywords—Propeller turbine, runner blade, pitch angle, CFD simulation
