Abstract

This present research investigated the English learning interest and motivation of EFL Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic elementary school) students. The study employs a quantitative descriptive methodology, where by data is gathered through means of observation, documentation, and questionnaires. Participants included 30 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners who were enrolled at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic primary school) located in Medan, Indonesia. The questionnaire comprises a set of inquiries that have been modified to assess the overall interest of students towards speaking, reading, listening, and writing, along with inquiries pertaining to their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The results of questionnaires and observation notes indicate that the level of interest and motivation exhibited by EFL students towards learning the English language is notably high. Based on the distribution of scores, it can be inferred that students exhibit the highest level of interest in English listening skills, followed by reading, speaking, and lastly, writing. The primary determinant of intrinsic motivation among students is their personal inclination towards acquiring proficiency in the English language. The primary factor contributing to students' extrinsic motivation is the teacher, including her instructional methods, use of media, and recognition of outstanding academic performance. Of the two components, extrinsic motivation outweighs intrinsic motivation in terms of percentage score. The findings of this study suggest that teachers have a significant role in sustaining and/or enhancing students' interest and motivation in learning English.

Abstract

The role of grammar instruction is inevitably important for second and/or foreign language mastery. Unfortunately, in practice, many English teachers in foreign language contexts such as in Indonesia still teach grammar deductively; that is, learners are provided the grammar rules and examples, are told to memorize them, and then are asked to apply the rules to other examples. This particular method of teaching is believed to produce learners who cannot use the language communicatively although they have considerable knowledge of grammar rules. It has also been seen as contributing to learners’ passive participation and negative feelings towards grammar learning. The aims of this paper are to give an alternative solution to that problem by offering some ideas of game-based activities and to investigate students’ perception of the implementation of communicative game-based grammar learning. Using pre- and post-study questionnaire, the research study was conducted with 30 adult EFL learners taking an after-class English course. The findings indicated that these activities were effective in creating a non-threatening and more relaxing grammar classes, changing students’ negative perception of grammar learning and improving their perceived communicative skills.

Abstract

Examining disaster reports in Indonesia is critical, as it provides essential insights into people perceptions and reactions to the frequent natural disasters. Disaster reports were examined through its communicative element including attitude to see the viewpoints of the newspaper towards disaster reports. The objectives of this research are to categorize attitudes, explain how attitudes are realized, and explain why attitudes are realized in disaster reporting in Indonesian newspaper, especially The Jakarta Post (TJP). Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as the analytical framework, a qualitative method was employed. The data is analyzed using Martin and White's theory of appraisal (2005). A corpus of 14 TJP newspaper articles on Indonesian natural disasters published in 2021 is broken down into clauses denoting attitude. The results of the study indicate: 1) there are three different attitude types, with appreciation being the most prevalent and having a predominately negative polarity, 2) the attitude realization reveals that TJP is the most dominant appraiser, followed by the authorities, and 3) the realization is attributed to two themes namely self-claimed recognition and neglect of self-failure, and one tone multiple perspectives which means negative attitudes dominantly voiced by different appraisers. The themes reveal the newspaper's concealed ideology points to a narrative of critique and disillusionment, which may shape the readers' understanding of the disasters and the associated societal responses.

Abstract

Reflective thinking is an important factor that can affect a teacher's effectiveness when teaching in the educational setting. This study aims to investigate the relationship between reflective thinking of EFL teachers in Indonesia and their teaching styles. A descriptive-correlational design was employed in the quantitative research method, and a survey with fifteen EFL teachers from different Indonesian schools was used to collect data. With a correlation of 0.757 and a significance value (sig) of 0.0010.05, the statistical analysis's results demonstrated a strong positive or close to significant relationship between teachers' reflective thinking levels and their teaching styles. Additionally, the percentage of 53.3% indicates that EFL teachers in Indonesia tend to use the "All-round flexible, Adaptable teacher" teaching style when teaching students in English in the classroom. This finding illustrates that Indonesian EFL teachers who exhibit high levels of reflective thinking tend to have more effective teaching styles. Suggestions for future research include in-depth research to understand specific aspects of reflective thinking as it relates to teaching styles.

Abstract

In line with the increasing institutionalization of scholarly publication as a graduation requirement for graduate students around the world, the use of a community of writing practice to support students navigate their publication endeavour has begun to receive attention from academic supervisors and graduate researchers. Despite the burgeoning interest in this topic, there has been little empirical evidence on master’s students’ experiences and perspectives of working within such writing groups at an Indonesian university. This phenomenological case study intends to fill this lacuna by elaborating on the process of a writing group's establishment and development for master's students of English education and exploring their perceptions of participating in such a community of practice (COP). Findings indicate that the writing group served as a flexible and participatory COP that produced critical and enduring alterations in identity as scholarly writers amongst participants. Specifically, their perceived transition into academic writers involves three aspects: knowledge of the values of scholarly publication, construction of a scholarly identity, and demystification of the publishing endeavour. This study's findings can be utilized to inform other master's and doctorate programs, as well as academic professionals seeking interventions to assist their students' productive writing.

Abstract

Evaluation is a crucial step in the process of enhancing the quality of educational materials through the design of new content. The evaluation of textbooks in English Language Teaching can be conducted using a variety of techniques. Adapted from Cunningsworth and Kusel (1991) and Skierso (1991), this study utilized checklist instruments to determine whether or not a textbook is appropriate for use. This study provides an overview of ELT textbook evaluation, with a particular emphasis on the use of a checklist. It aimed to assess the suitability of a specific textbook for an ESP course for fashion design students. According to the findings of this study, 90 percent of respondents agree this book is excellent based on its general attributes and 93 percent agree based on its learning and teaching content. The presentation above suggests that this book can be used for ESP courses by fashion design students. However, the book does not come without any weaknesses, which include the absence of a book for teachers and the absence of pair and group exercises.

Abstract

As a result of the utilization of technological advances to achieve competency integration, the 4.0 technology era is gaining traction in the field of education. This study aims to explore the efficacy of using the Edmodo application as an online-based learning medium in order to improve the way in which EFL students learn English using technology. By  a mixed-methods research design, this study recruited twenty-two tenth graders in the Mathematics and Natural Science stream from an integrated Islamic senior high school in Aceh province, Indonesia. The data indicate that the majority of students possess the necessary devices to assist them in completing their tasks, and a significant proportion of them use these devices to play games and conduct research. By categorizing aspects and components, Edmodo improves students' vocabulary when used to assess their learning progress through assignments and quizzes. In addition, the students are more willing to request assistance from teachers and peers when using the application. Despite the fact that Edmodo requires a smartphone and a reliable internet connection to utilize it, the participants do not report having any significant issues with the two requirements, however, half of them report having trouble attaching assignments from different types of files such as Doc, Pdf, Video, and Audio. Overall, Edmodo is an outstanding and highly effective online resource for reading, writing, listening, and speaking English classes (e-learning).
