Abstract

This study offers a comprehensive approach that has not been widely explored, integrating PhET interactive simulations and the Phyphox sensor application to analyze the simultaneous influence of four physical parameters amplitude, frequency, dispersion angle, and pressure on the characteristics of sound waves. The integration of PhET interactive simulations and the Phyphox application enables real-time visualization and experimental data measurement through smartphone sensors. Furthermore, this research contributes new insights by exploring the dispersion angle in the context of wave direction and intensity, a topic rarely discussed in digital media-based acoustic studies. The method used is a quantitative experiment with amplitude variations from 1 to 10 and frequencies of 400 Hz, 500 Hz, and 600 Hz, measured at distances of 1 cm, 3.25 cm, and 5.5 cm. The study also includes observations of reflection and interference patterns of waves at propagation angles of 18°, 45°, and 90°, as well as an analysis of the effect of air pressure on sound intensity, with pressure varied from 0.0 atm to 1.0 atm. The results show that sound wave intensity increases with higher amplitude and frequency, in accordance with the theory that intensity is proportional to the square of the amplitude. The propagation angle influences the reflection and interference patterns, resulting in varied energy distribution. Additionally, air pressure significantly affects sound intensity, emphasizing the crucial role of the medium in sound wave propagation.

Abstract

The researchers present a simple experimental activity to measure the sound intensity level using an Android-based smartphone to prove the inverse square law and analyze the dependence of the sound intensity to the sound source frequency. The type of this study was quantitative research by conducting level of intensity experiment using a pair of smartphones with one smartphone functioning as the sound source using a tone generator free application (app) and the other smartphone functioning as the detector installed with Physics Toolbox sound meter application to measure the arriving sound intensity level. The smartphone functioning as the sound source was placed at a certain place labeled as the origin point (0.0), while the other smartphone as the detector was placed at various distances on the x-axis. In this study, the frequencies of the tone generator used were 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz. Then, the sound intensity level versus distance was analyzed to determine the compatibility between the experimental results using a smartphone and the prevailing theory, namely the inverse square model. The sound intensity level detected by the smartphone from 2,000 Hz resulted in the graph with smaller slope after passing 0.3 meters. The results follow the theorem of which the sound intensity level at the detector depends on the distance between the source and the detector based on the inverse square law. When the frequency of a source was changed (500 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000), the sound intensity also changed. Higher frequency leads to a larger sound intensity. The experiment can thus be used to assist  high school students and physics undergraduates in understanding the inverse square law of sound or to study environmental noise with a simple and low-cost experiment.

Abstract

The utilization of local food ingredients is often neglected in everyday life, even though it has great potential to strengthen local wisdom values among the community and increase student involvement in project-based learning activities. One of the local food ingredients that is rich in nutrients but underutilized is pumpkin, which is a good source of beta-carotene and fiber and has a great opportunity to be developed further. This study applied the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach in the pumpkin pudding development project to strengthen local wisdom and increase the utilization of local food ingredients. The STEM approach was applied through several stages: first, from the science aspect, the nutritional composition of pumpkin was analyzed to maximize its health benefits; second, from the technology aspect, innovative processing techniques were used to optimize the taste and texture of the pudding; third, through engineering, recipe modifications were made to maintain product stability and increase durability; and fourth, mathematics was used in calculating the exact nutritional composition. The results showed that pumpkin pudding is not only of high nutritional value, but also well received by the public, especially teenagers. This project is expected to inspire the development of similar local food products that are not only delicious and nutritious, but also support local wisdom and food sustainability through an integrated STEM approach.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance students’ problem-solving skills in physics, specifically in simple harmonic motion, by implementing a collaborative flipped classroom (FC) model based on discovery learning and the think-pair-share (TPS) method. Using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group, the research involved 30 high school students in West Java across two classes. The experimental group participated in flipped classroom activities that incorporated TPS, where students worked in pairs to discuss and explain concepts. Pre-class sessions focused on conceptual understanding, while in-class activities emphasized problem-solving. Both groups received an e-learning module developed by the researchers, which included material descriptions, instructional videos, and guided worksheets. The experimental group showed a significantly higher N-gain (0.85) compared to the control group (0.64), with statistical analysis (independent T test, p<0.005) confirming a significant improvement in problem-solving skills.

Abstract

This research examines the contributions of Al-Khazini, a 12th-century Muslim scientist, who proposed the theory of gravity in his book “Mizan Al-Hikmah,” predating Isaac Newton by several centuries. Despite Al-Khazini’s pioneering work, his contributions are often overlooked in the history of Physics, with Newton predominantly recognized in educational contexts. This study aims to underscore Al-Khazini’s significant role in the development of gravitational theory and enhance students’ understanding of the history of Physics. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and literature review, the research analyzes relevant references to highlight this oversight. This study found that Physicsteachers frequently omit the discoveries of Muslim scientists, leading to a Western-centric view of Physicshistory among students. The study concludes that while Al-Khazini first conceptualized the theory of gravity, Newton later formulated it mathematically. Integrating Al-Khazini’s contributions into Physicseducation can enrich students’ comprehension of scientific history, deepen their grasp of gravitational concepts, and foster appreciation for the contributions of Muslim scientists. This integration promotes a more diverse and inclusive teaching approach, encouraging curriculum revisions to better acknowledge Islamic intellectual heritage and provide a more comprehensive education.
